Chess is a fighting game. It's just not a single-character, real-time fighting game, rather being squad v. squad and turn-based.
Although if you want to draw a line, you have to tell me which side of the line Your Only Move Is Hustle falls on; I've heard it described as "basically turn-based smash bros", although I've yet to see how it compares to the experience of playing Smash Ultimate online with Spectrum cable internet, which is *actually* turn-based smash bros.

the fact that the first tournament that amsa won was maybe the hardest one ever is really funny and kind of heartwarming
Do I need to use the best character in order to win? Yes, yes I do.
Does Amsa and Junebug? No, they do not.
Imagine Melee does eventually get ported but it’s the PAL version, and that’s how another character ends up winning a major
Knowing how vocal melee snobs are, they would never let a major run on pal, even if it got ported.

It really does make you wonder who’s next to break the glass ceiling and the old stereotype that only eight melee characters are viable. Link stonks are on the rise but I do believe in my heart of hearts with absolutely no evidence to support it that Ganon’s gonna do it one day.
i also think he could. all he needs is a few hits to take a stock even in his worst matchups.

Axe's win at summit 8 is one of my favorite melee moments ever! I still remember watching it live on twitch and being so happy for him. I felt the same way about Amsa's win at TBH; both those wins made me cry.

i feel the same way. of course, the top tiers are hype. but, it’s way more exciting to see an underdog pull out all the stops to win with a character that isn’t traditionally seen as “good”.

I think is objetively wrong to call those characters bad. Specially considering their niches, results, good qualities and that they are others characters truly bad, because they are poorly design with very exploitable weaknesses (like Kirby, Ness, Roy or Bowser)
Sure I can agree with that! All of this is contextualized around the rest of the cast and relative timelines though - niches are carved out through developed play, you can’t have good results without players trying them first, good and bad qualities are not fully explored in the early stages of a competitive title, so it’s a bit of a chicken before the egg comparison. In the context of this video, it’s simply celebrating players who were able to win a tournament with a character that was initially perceived as bad, but it’s pretty much impossible to make those kinds of statements objectively (and I tried to allude to that in the quick bit about tier lists). man ive been subscribed for a long time but im getting kinda tired of seeing things lifted straight out of asumsaus and melee moments videos without credit. i have to imagine that theres something i dont know here because theres no way those guys dont know their content is ending up here so i dont wanna cast aspersions but it just feels weird
The honest answer is that’s just fair use, but I normally bake in credits to other video sources which you can see in some of my other videos. I had left for vacation last week and only had about one work day to edit this video from zero, so I just didn’t have time to bake in annotations and planned to list sources while I had downtime. My fault on that, but please don’t assume there’s something malicious - both of those creators are actually my friends haha. Happy Holidays!

I feel like an honorable mention needs to be given here to Jigglypuff. Puff wasn't in the top 6 of any* tier list, and outside the top 10 as often as not, until Hungrybox won GENESIS in 2009. Not as fringe a character as Yoshi pre-Amsa or DK pre-Junebug, but definitely a character who got singlehandedly moved up the tier list.
*Puff was 2nd on the original April 2004 tier list later revealed to be an April Fools' joke. But post-hungrybox Puff is 3rd on *real* tier lists.
