An interesting alternative to this camera would be Praktica FX2 / FX3. It has shutter speeds up to 1/500s, popular M42 lens mount, and automatic aperture (as in, it stops it down only when taking the picture). But as far as I can tell the viewfinder is smaller and I found myself using the magnifier most of the time.
Wow Eduardo you have nailed it again, a simple shoot but with a pre 50's look to the images and the music just lovely for this setting, great model too complimenting the whole presentation.Sometimes you hear a piece of music or you see a photo and it takes you back in time that had not crossed your mind in years, that little trigger to bring it all back.
There is a pentaprism viewfinder available for the camera. That's why the waist viewfinder is removable. There are very many lens options for the camera that also fit the Exakta.
The Exa is a good little camera. I have an older version and I can't easily use flash because mine uses a different system for flash sync. If you want a camera that uses the same lenses and viewfinder modules, the bigger Exacta has faster shutter speeds. The speed limit is because of the shutter design.
an alternative to the exa is the exakta.. for ex. the Exakta Varex. It uses the same viewfinder like the exa ( it can be changed to an pentaprism for example). to fix the problem with the dark viewfinder at f16 you can use an objective like an Pancolar or Tessar or Domiplan / Domiron with exakta-mount and a spring aperture ( it is closed automatically when you take a picture)
I inherited this particular camera from my great-grandfather. Excellent (nearly mint) condition. Looking forward to running some rolls through it this summer!
Thank you for your excellent work! Could you explain in couple words what is the theory that digital cam captures 1.5-2 steps more light then the film (7:20)? Thank you
Really like the photos. Has that quirky moody element in Jarmusch films, perhaps, like the character is timeless yet out of place, all done nicely w the lighting and naturalistic mis en scene.
I have this camera with the CZJ Pancolar 50/2 and it has the shutter release built into the lens. Your preview in the waist level finder is with the lens wide open and it only stops down to your set aperture once you half-press, or release the shutter. Maybe try looking for another lens with a similar feature to overcome the issue you're having with the finder. The Pancolar has super swirly bokeh and is quite stunning in its results.
a lot of issues that you have with this camera can be solved really easily. First off, the magnifier: youre using a pretty early waist level finder, if you get the newer ones, the magnifier works more like a hasselblad where its spring loaded and goes back by pushing it in. Your lens is also a non-auto which means the aperture doesnt automatically close down when you take the picture. Most exakta lenses do automatically stop down the aperature so you can look at getting a better lens and theyre extremely cheap. As for the shutter speed, i personally shoot portra 160 as it lines up well for use with sunny 16 since the iso value and shutter speed are lines up. Ive shot a ton of rolls with the Exa and ive never had issues with movement speed.
Just had a portrait photoshoot yesterday . Using Strobes in a Studio , i shot a Sony a6000 and i had to do the same XD to compose wide open and then go to F8 etc . I guess thats one of the low points of Mirrorless ?
Thank you Eduardo!
Awesome I also have had my eye on this camera for some time there is one for sale I want to buy I want to buy the Edixa Flex too... another brilliant episode 😊
A good medium format camera like this is the Kiev 6c. They're very cheap for 120 film cameras and have very fun quirks to work around, but the feeling for using it on the street with either the waist level finder or the metered prism is one of the most satisfying cameras around, considering they're about 1/5 of the price of a pentax or mamiya equivalent :D Superb episode as always Ed!!!
fun video, fun camera and fun flash! I also think the shots had a great feel for them even if it wasn't what you had thought at first. I think ektar 100 would be great with this camera :)
Hello Eduardo, Is there any relationship between sensor size and exposure reading? Because you are taking the numbers from an apsc and putting into a 35mm full frame equivalent. Do you use same exposure reading for medium format and full frame 35mm film? I thought the light meter reading is irrespective of sensor size. Like to hear your thoughts ( or may be a video on this :) ) Gracias.
@ Joy Rahman Light does not differ using APS-C or 35 mm. With same focal length, angle of view differs with sensor-size, but all other parameters stay same.
Ed you are a MASTER with your pictures. I honestly LOVED them!!!! Question: any plan for future meet ups or photowalks? I’ve been following your channel for awhile now and when I found out you were moving to my city I got super excited!!! Hope someday you do set something up Regardless great video as always!!!!
the pictures have a really vintage look to them, even if they weren't the look you were intending they still like very.... stylized and almost like vintage magazine photos.
These first shots were really amazing! Saw the one on instagram and directly needed to see this episode. These Steinheil lenses are pretty cool and so tiny! You should have mentioned perhaps that its one of the better lenses, cause most of the time you find these Cameras with cheap tessars.
I really love your videos and your street photography ninja- style. I have a question: is legal in the countries your usually shoot your photos to publish photos of people without permission? Here in Italy is kinda impossible ...
How easy do you find focusing with this camera? I have one, and sometimes if there is no sufficeint light, even with 2.9 it is incredibly hard to focus, therefore, some images come out slightly blurred. Also, I notice that 150 is not fast enough for movements, most moving objects are always blurred a wee bit.
I was looking at a fleemarket this week and saw a Exa 1a and thought it's broken because the shutter didn't work when pressing a button in the normal place, now the mistery is solved. And very interesting pictures :)
@@g-r-a-e-m-e- no problem, they are pretty cheap and widely available in germany, especially the eastern part. The Exa 1 is also available with two different lens mounts :)
What isn't reported here is that the Exa was the less expensive alternative body for those who, at the time, were investing in the most sophisticated SLR camera system of the mid- to late 1950s, the Exakta. Exakta in the late 1950s was the system. It had hundreds of specialized accessories for all type of medical and scientific uses. Until Nikon came out with the Nikon F in 1959 and in the next years produced a wide range of accessories to customize its use, there was nothing remotely like the Exakta system. Additionally, every lens maker outside Japan made lenses for Exakta, the very best, and some not so much, literally hundreds. You are on the chap, but you want a second body for backup: Exa. The reason for the low fastest shutter speed is that the Exa doesn't use a focal plane shutter of the sort used by Exakta, Leica and most others of the period. It uses its own funky (inexpensive) design which incorporates the reflex mirror operation as part of the shutter system. The Exa was produced for many years, and in later models, this became more conventional.

What!? A photography channel that actually shoots stuff!? The nerve.
I found the exact same camera one week ago for 30$ ! can't wait to use it for an episode, i will try to be as good as you.
I looked up THIS video after watching your "through the viewfinder" short featuring this camera. Haha.
Sir, your videos are so therapeutic. Thank you!
those photos were awesome and giving me all kinds of crazy photoshoot ideas!

Thank you Eduardo. You have great content.
Actualy you took amazing pictures! Can you do a video how to sync old cameras with flashes for beginers?
This is just what I needed. Thank you for posting! I really enjoyed your photo shoot.
THE SHOTS AT 10:30 AND 10:45 ARE SO GOOD OMG. Love the classic look the lens on this thing produces!! Wow
The Exa is a good little camera. I have an older version and I can't easily use flash because mine uses a different system for flash sync.

Sunny16 + Exa 0 v1.4, thats how i learned shooting film. best thing that happened to me, really grateful!
Love the video. A tutorial series on flash photography in the future would be nice. I wish you the best, and good luck in Uni!
What an incredible model. Your pictures were fine in an ambitious lighting situation. Your model was wonderful!
I inherited this particular camera from my great-grandfather. Excellent (nearly mint) condition. Looking forward to running some rolls through it this summer!
Bravo! Congratulations on taking such very beautiful pictures with a camera that has so many limitations.
Thank you for your excellent work! Could you explain in couple words what is the theory that digital cam captures 1.5-2 steps more light then the film (7:20)? Thank you
I really like the images! Some really dramatic looking shots!

The sports finder overcomes the problem with waist finders of reversing the direction to frame and follow a subject.
I just picked one up, very excited to try it! Loved the episode =)
What a beautiful looking camera. Thanks for sharing.
My nana just gave me the exact same camera from when she was a teenager! Can't wait to test it out
I have three, need to get some film in one. Cheers
These pictures are incredible
Thank you Eduardo!
I just got this camera for free from a film lab! Love your shots, I’m looking forward to testing mine out😁
Beautiful work, how do you go about knowing what to set your light settings to when using film? Ty! 🙏📸
Can you please shoot pictures with the Canon prima mini ii ?
Awesome I also have had my eye on this camera for some time there is one for sale I want to buy I want to buy the Edixa Flex too... another brilliant episode 😊
I've a ExaktaVarex VX, a good camera too!
I do too :)
Awesome images and video! It was nice to see you shoot a model and also with flash. Great job!
Incredible photos from a tiny hard-cord camera, you are genius (y)
I have been looking at these for a few weeks! thanks for the review..

You mate, helped me to understand my new (old of course) Exa Camera! Thank you so much and great video as always. Greetings from Germany :)

how did they synchronize the flash?
Well, not really a camera I would pick up. Had an Exa 1b before but I‘m not sad I got rid of them
ARS_Analog schön dich hier zu sehen xD
Tamtam hey du auch hier? Wie schön! Klein ist die Welt ☺️
I have one of these. I need a new clock spring though...
Beautiful! what lens did you use?
LOVE everything about your videos man.
Great video! Wonderful camera! Thanks for sharing!
What lense do you have? You said it was 50mm f3.5 but what brand
Nice one! Thanks for the review
Loved the contrast of the images. All he shots came out great I would love to learn to use flash better
Curlypengling what’s your problem using flash?
Thanks for the video,.... Can you tell me what is this wireless flash trigger? I am looking for something like this.
fun video, fun camera and fun flash! I also think the shots had a great feel for them even if it wasn't what you had thought at first. I think ektar 100 would be great with this camera :)
9:30 is a particularly beautiful picture. Shame about the Starbucks cup, though
I like the starbux brings the photos into reality 😂
No matter how beautiful something is we humans will f it up 😂 it’s poetic
Music?
What film should I use

That is a cool looking camera.
Very interesting camera! Great video as always, Ed
Your videos are always amazing. I like the camera as well and I agree it should be a Lot of fun to shoot with. Keep them coming.
Love all the pics man, greeting from Thailand. Big Fan!

@ merewife
the Kodak Tri-X is a quite grainy film for low light conditions. The camera can do sharper with lower sensitivity films (like ISO 100).
i have an old exakta but I think the film rewind is broken or something ugh
why why why no more update

How did you use speedlight with analog film camera??? What’s the name of remote controller you using?
After using those old stuff, so appreciated for modern technology, even like shutter and aperture were linked. 😂

I love my Exa 1c and I ask myself, would the viewfinder of the younger Exa in the body of the older sister ?
Hi Ed, another great shoot film episode I have just won one on ebay for £40!

As a left handed photographer, I do not concure with your preferences! Lol 😊
I have a box full of Exakta gear in a cupboard.
i'm curious as to why you were dissatisfied with these pictures, they turned out really good
I actually quite like the look or underexposed Tri X, good stuff!
I have one of those but I don't shoot it. It is very uncomfortable imho
Buen lente contraste definición boked
Film is fun!
