  • The very fish that ushered in sportfishing was gone off California’s coastline for nearly a century. The large bluefin returned again, this time, rivaling the golden era of the past.
With pacific bluefin populations still well below historic levels, every angler on the west coast is wondering if this fishery is here to stay or if the golden years are now…
Folklore Films by AFTCO Presents: Year of the Bluefin.
A story told with a whisper of the past, something only Greg Stotesbury could manage. Stotesbury is a bit of a legend around these parts. Seasoned, just like you’d imagine. A man who’s seen a few hard days and spent his best ones offshore somewhere in the Pacific chasing sails, marlin, tuna - you name it, he’s caught it.
Stotesbury pulls out a weathered rod, getting everything in place to stretch some line, preparing for a trip of his own. The rhythmic click with each turn of the handle and the smell of salt wafting through the air sets the scene for the richness of his tale.

This is an incredible film and a hopefully ongoing story of recovery. We hope to help support the work of Tag a Giant Foundation not only in pole and line bluefin fisheries but also in purse seine fisheries in the greater Pacific region.

Fantastic video. I've been lucky enough to fish for these amazing creatures in Hatteras for multiple seasons including tagging and there is nothing like it. Seeing a school make a literal flat spot in the sea really gives you perspective. Good to hear about those working to ensure more science is known as well. Tight lines!

I LOVE fishing! As a kid growing up on the New Jersey shore in the 1960s (Beach Haven, LBI) my parents had a charge account at a local marina that sold tackle and bait. I would hop on my stingray bike with my fishing pole, get some frozen squid and a coke and head out to my secret fishing spots all summer long. A story my mom used to tell me was when one of my parents friends asked me one day what I liked about fishing and would I take them one day. I responded, "it's something I can do alone". I have been fishing ever since and always get excited when I have a fish on... the feeling never gets old.

Great mix of history (wait! - coat and tie required ??) and current times. Support science - AFTCO rocks! RIP Zane.

The west coast during the 50’s and 60’s to early 70’s, man when I was kid we used to go out in the channel and the back of Catalina to tanner bank and catch bluefin during the summer, but they were wiped out, one of the main reasons why they were here because the amount of sardines, anchovies, squid, and mackerel. Plenty of food to keep them coming around, but like a light switch from one year to the next they were gone! Now over the last several years they’ve been making a slow come back, now I’m seeing the devastation once again by charter boats posting pictures of slaughtered BF that you just know it’ll be wasted not eaten and thrown away, all because of the me attitude of my selfies. Hopefully this program will help understand where they go and migrate too and why, great mini documentary, and size limit needs to done to at least try and do something about over fishing. I’m terribly sorry about your son, I’m sure he your was best fishing buddy.🥺

Id love to help contribute to a tagging program. This is the most sustainable way to fully understand our awesome fishery. Let me know how to help!

Beautifully done! This has always been my dream fish 🐟 after reading a story about them years ago in Saltwater Fisherman magazine! Your story about the albatross made me cry. 🥲. I believe you indeed had a visitation 😇
