Got to ride this train this past October, from Portland to Los Angeles. The scenery in Oregon and California were spectacular. Would love to take another ride someday.
I have read most all of the comments and I do have to agree. The last time I took Amtrak it was from Portage, Wisconsin to Edmonds, Washington to visit my brother. Being the first time I rode a train not riding in the engine as the conductor was truly a delightful experience. I had done all the research online about Amtrak. I found the Amtrak Web page to be most enlightening. We booked a roomette we thought it was very reasonable. Meals included, the staff is wonderful and unlike going on one of the airlines, no one was feeling me up. Very glad you enjoyed your trip.
This was beautifully shot, thank you for making this. I can not wait to ride Amtrak this coming summer. The employees sounded so pleasant and the food looked great!
Took the Coast Starlight to Seattle from San Jose and back. What an awesome experience!! The Amtrak folks do a great job! Get a sleeper...it's well worth it!
Yes it is, I took it from Sacramento to Seattle and back, had a roomette. I was treated really good. The cheese cake was awesome. The next time you take it, get the cheese cake, so good!!!!
My trip on the Coast Starlight was interesting, but, very delayed. It arrived at Emeryville at 2am, roughly 4 hours behind schedule. When I got off at Portland, it was 3:30am, so almost 12 hours behind schedule. Lovely trip, but would have been nice to see more of it during the day.
I took The Starlight from Tacoma to Benicia CA leaving at 8 AM. It was almost one post-card scene after the other to the other till dark. The dining car and club car were great, the staff was excellent. It was abt 24 hrs, difficult to sleep for this old guy, would love to have had a roomette but they're very pricey. I'll take a pillow next time. On the whole, I loved it.
It sounds like a wonderful trip. I better take that trip while I can as Trump just announced that he is cutting the Starlight and all other long distance trains. He pretty much will be eviscerating our passenger rail system under his new infrastructure "improvement" plan.
JACK ANTHONY Trump is going to stop the Coast Starlight? You're kidding me? Riding the Starlight was most of my reason for coming to the US next year (from Australia). Looks like I'll go to Europe and spend my money there instead. So much for making America great again.
Crosshead1 there are no plans to get rid of the Coast Starlight. While he has voiced a bit of concern about possibly reducing long distance routes, it would be more of the very unprofitable and long ones like the Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, etc. But, those are just thoughts, and Trump has a way of changing his mind very quickly based on circumstance.
The Republicans have been trying to kill Amtrak for years. The long-distance routes lose money, which is why people like Trump don't like them. But they are not going anywhere. The US is a huge country, and we need those long-distance train routes to knit the country together. Not everyone wants to fly or drive, and the bus is nowhere near as comfortable and pleasant as the train.
My Daughter took this route,, from Sacramento, Ca to Wash--- Then took a bus to Canada... I hope I can go with her next time,, She loved it..... I MEAN SHE LOVED IT,,,,,,
+quietkey75 Hi,,, Thanks, I have never flown, or road in a train, not even a Cruise..... I will do this soon... Thanks for the comment, it makes me more motavated........ Take care...
Wow, I did it from LA to Seattle in early December 2014 and it brings back some great memories. Seemed to be a lot more "wintery" than show here. I'm going to have to do the return trip. Long way from Australia though!
I first rode the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Oakland on Thursday, November 16,1978 senrout to Travis AFB to get my flight to Clark AFB in the Philippines for the best tour of duty I ever had when I was in the Navy. The Coast Starlight was all single level Budd built cars except for two vista dome cars. The rout is my favorite of all the Amtrak routes along with the Pacific Surfliner it shares between Los Angeles & San Luis Opisbo.
The video is great and with excellent views of the landscape. I enjoyed it a lot when you film inside the bus. please if you have another chance of taking an amtrak again , could you film when you are getting on it. it would be very interesting to watch it especially for those people who are abroad. Thank you for sharing this excellent video!
My oldest son(5) is really into trains, we have taken him to Old Sacramento to ride the steam train, which he LOVED, but keeps on asking to take him on the Amtrak train. For his 6th birthday in November I want to take him on this train ride, but don't know where to between Portland,OR or Seattle,WA....? It will be just him, my 4 yr old and myself. Wife will not be home around that time. Will be leaving from San Jose,CA so we'll see which destination it'll be!! Thanks for the Video!
Thank you for sharing. I'm doing a rail trip from Chicago to W Glacier, then on to Portland, Eugene and up to Seattle. Am trying to decide whether to take the Coast Starlight or the Cascades to Seattle from Eugene. The final decision may just be up to the schedule, but your video helps a lot!
***** I HAVE BEEN ON THE ZEPHYR CHICAGO TO MARTINEZ, CA. WHAT AN ADVENTURE. GREAT DINING TOO. 2 DAYS 2 NIGHTS BEAUTIFUL SUNRISES, SUNSETS, THE ROCKIES, THE SIERRAS, ALSO MOONERS ALONG THE COLORADO RIVER.
Thank you for sharing this. I have to travel from Seattle to San Francisco in 10 days. Debating whether should I fly, drive or take the train. I would like to see the scenery.
There's a funner way to get from San Francisco to Seattle: instead of taking the Thruway Motorcoach from San Francisco to Emeryville, take Caltrain from San Francisco to San Jose, and pick it up there.
Your videos make it feel like I'm actually on the train itself, But I realize that I'm not going any where here at my desk. I'd love to get a bedroom that has bathrm in the unit. and take a train trip from LAX to SEA
Being a tall guy with very long legs, I think I might go for a full sized sleeper just to be able to extend my legs. Would that be a problem if I paid for the larger sized room? Or, is there a minimum occupancy in these accomdations? Anybody know about this?
Amtrak stopped serving their French Toast on all their trains except The Lakeshore Limited. which sucks, it was the only thing I liked during breakfast. Also it should be noted that Parlour car is gone for good now. The last remnant of The El Capitan train.
Dear friend: In the next month of June, I will travel through the United States, start in Chicago with the Empire Builder in Seattle, from there I will take the Coast Starlight to Los Angeles and return from San Francisco in the California Zephir to Chicago. Any comments about it, information, videos, blogs, etc., will be very beneficial for my trip. From already thank you very much. Sincerely, Fausto Brindisi, from Rosario, Argentina.
Ugh, I want to go on this so badly, but I need a reason to go to Seattle because if I say to a Seahawks game my family will attack me XD we hate the Seahawks, but if the 49ers or packers go there I suppose that's a reason, good vid btw
The Portland and Seattle stations are absolutely stunning!!!

quietkey75 can I ask you a question

Thank you for making and sharing this video. I'm definitely planning a trip up to Emerald City to catch a cruise up to Alaska soon.

Great video! The Starlight's scenery is beautiful. This trip is going onto my to-do list!
Nicely done video. We're taking the Coast Starlight from Tacoma to San Francisco and back later this month and are looking forward to the experience.
Nice :) I've taken it from San Jose to Seattle and Portland a couple times, and down to Santa Barbara as well. This is the best Amtrak line, no doubt.
Thank you from sharing. I will be Coast Starlight in May from Oakland to Seattle.
I am planning to take this trip in July of this year. Thank you for posting.
I'll be on this train in 3 weeks coming from Los Angeles!!! Can't Wait!!!
Wow, I did it from LA to Seattle in early December 2014 and it brings back some great memories. Seemed to be a lot more "wintery" than show here. I'm going to have to do the return trip. Long way from Australia though!
+quietkey75 What was the date?
+Canberra AvNut I rode the whole length once with my dad and all the rest of the times it was to or from Emeryville.
Always wanted to visit Australia.
Awesome, I have taken it both ways, it is a beautiful and wonderful trip.
Thanks for the video really nice to see what the coast starlight looks like
Wonderful video.. Thanks for posting. I went to Portland, OR in 2006 by Greyhound and did not see the train station.. Next time I will know it.

Very nice video! Congratulations! ! USA wonderful. Robson, from Brazil.
I took this train twice in the last 6 months from Oakland down to Van Nuys station.
I'm taking the CS to Seattle from Emeryville on May 6th this year.
Did you enjoy your trip ;)
I had the best time of my life.
I was on 14/11 RT from LA to Sacramento October 2010, I enjoyed the train ride very much, I need to do it again, But No time for vacation.
My oldest son(5) is really into trains, we have taken him to Old Sacramento to ride the steam train, which he LOVED, but keeps on asking to take him on the Amtrak train. Hope to do this route sometime in the near future. Would especially like to see the Parlour Cars.
Nice Video, very relaxing.
The book you advertised can be found in any local library now.
Great vid. I'm heading up their end of month. I think il try it, looks amazing!
Haven't decided yet!

+Paullette Aquino: Paulette, If leaving from Chicago, do you need to change trains in Seattle?
Nice job patriot God Bless you thank you for the experience
Thank you for sharing this. I have to travel from Seattle to San Francisco in 10 days. Debating whether should I fly, drive or take the train. I would like to see the scenery.
Thank you for the suggestion. The sleeper is a bit expensive. .~$460 oneway. Is the coach seat ($134) comfortable for a 22 hr journey?
The day i want to travel, it is 460. For the next day it is, 280 :(
Sweet! Your train had a dash 8!
Yeah, it seems like the coast starlight always has a dash 8
Amtrak, Southern Pacific & Coaster Productions yeah those are the best types of engines
Nice work....thank you.
There's a funner way to get from San Francisco to Seattle: instead of taking the Thruway Motorcoach from San Francisco to Emeryville, take Caltrain from San Francisco to San Jose, and pick it up there.
You could always stick your thumb out, and hitch a ride instead. 😆
Very nice!
Is a wonderful trip in Amtrak trains
I love trains.
Your videos make it feel like I'm actually on the train itself, But I realize that I'm not going any where here at my desk. I'd love to get a bedroom that has bathrm in the unit. and take a train trip from LAX to SEA
What sort of camera did you use ? Wonderful video :)
Being a tall guy with very long legs, I think I might go for a full sized sleeper just to be able to extend my legs. Would that be a problem if I paid for the larger sized room? Or, is there a minimum occupancy in these accomdations? Anybody know about this?
Is this route still available?
Delicious food.
When you are on BNSF track's the coast star light is on time not on UP lines why
Where does this train depart from?
Amtrak stopped serving their French Toast on all their trains except The Lakeshore Limited. which sucks, it was the only thing I liked during breakfast. Also it should be noted that Parlour car is gone for good now. The last remnant of The El Capitan train.
Dude how much did it cost
Great video RIP pacific parlour car
Great video...(The slob in the beginning throws his cigarette on the ground)
Person next to him didn't approve of his cigarette throwing and had a few choice words for him!
I saw that immediately. Who DOES that?? Slob is perfect choice of words.
amtrak not going to Canada((vancouver))????
+Nabil Tohoin Not the Coast Starlight, Amtrak Cascades does though it does NOT go to cali. Sorry for the late response
+Nabil Tohoin I think Amtrak has bus connecting Vancouver and Seattle. I just booked my ticket yesterday.
Amtrak cascades is a line from Eugene to Vancouver, it's nice trip to take
Nabil, yes. it is Amtrak's Cascades. It runs from Seattle to Vancouver.
+JAMES PURKS Actually, the Cascades goes as south as Eugene, OR.
The train ride is how many hours? And how much it cost?
Just look it up on amtrak's website. It says it all there
dude in this video..where is the platform.u have to pick your train direct from the ground .which is too dangerous..from india
nice video
ji fais un très beau voyage et j'ai aussi très bien déjeuné - merci à l'opérateur
When I was on the Coast Starlight we came into Seattle 8 hours late. comment if you want to know the story
Awesomeboy13_YT train strike the car?
Was this recorded around Christmas time because there is a Christmas tree in the background of the shot of the waiting hall of king street station
Must have been shot in winter, what with the sun setting at 4:30pm.....

There isn't first class business class or any classes, but there are rooms you can get that is sort of like first class but it isn't called that
Next time Santa Barbara to las Vegas
AMTRAK SUPERLINER COAST STARLIGHT
what a rip. You go to sleep when you got on and missed some of the most beautiful scenery on the west coast. I turned it off after you woke up
john stafford #picky
I like this video, except for that dufus who was smoking while waiting on the train.
mn.
I just took the Coast Starlight from Portland to Seattle. I would much rather fly or drive, than ride this filthy, dirty, smelly, raggedy-ass train.
pffft
you don't see anything like that in south florida, awesome views, great vid...!!!
