In a somewhat reverse position my dad built a 1/32 Mosquito back in the 1980's. as far as I know it's the only model he ever built, apart from a C-130 he was going to build just before he passed in 2020. This video has inspired me to build one for his memory.

This is a great comment, thank you so much for sharing that. It helps reverse my negative view and makes me happy to know that it has inspired you to build something to honor your relationship with your father. I'm really glad something positive like that came out of this video I even hesitated to publish.

No laughing here, every build has a challenge. Overcoming them is a part of the journey. I think it still looks great, and I'm no aircraft guy! As a father I'd be touched and darn proud!

You can always laugh at my expense if you want Joe, I won't take offense lol. Sucks to suck sometimes as they say, but there's plenty of boxes of plastic left in the sea (figuratively of course). Thanks for checking out something with wings, appreciate you pal.

I built this as a kid in the seventies but made the canopy removable and didn't glue down the pilots. It was unthinkable for me on any my 1/32 models not to be able to remove the pilots, so I wasn't let that happen on this one either. Sure brings back memories, thanks for posting, turned out great after all !!!

'This isn't the video for you'....I get a lot of joy watching build videos whatever the skill level...and I enjoyed watching this one...I built this kit a couple years ago (as my first kit to get back into the hobby after a 45 year hiatus)...I managed to get a resin nose and flat screen canopy (Tamiya) which together cost more than the kit...The result was ok and I learned a lot....Thanks for the vid.....From the UK

Mate, after being victim to a couple of decal disasters myself. Definitely NOT your fault. Didn’t help that it was the last decal that really tipped the balance. But I don’t think the model was ruined. You did an amazing build and no doubt your dad’s heart broke for you. You’re an excellent modeller and we are all learning all the time. No laughing from me, mate. Looking forward to your next build.

Yes, unfortunately learning the hard way is really the only way to learn in this hobby. It's annoying when it happens, but there's always more boxes of plastic out there. I don't mind if folks laugh, I'd encourage it. I'm an amateur builder, that disclaimer is on my channel, and I'd rather be transparent about my mess ups because it might provide someone entertainment or help them avoid the same mistake (or both).

It looks great! You could fairly easily fix the right side codes by making a mask of the letters, removing the wrinkled decals, and airbrushing them on. Replace the roundel with another. But it probably hardly shows hanging up so, not a big issue!

I built this kit back in 1972, flew it by hand around the back yard garden until I tripped over my mom's flower bed and we both crashed to the ground just destroyed.

I have this model also in a blue Revell box. I don't have any inspiring information to give you actually the other way around your inspiring me to build that Mosquito that i have a few years now. Ithink it's a good job and I intend to make it in the same way except I'll use the landing gear for some details. And there I was worried about cockpit detail. I'll paint it as well as I can. I always have problem with decals. They either end up crooked or end up stuck to my hand. I've had that same issue using decal softener as I had no idea at first it does make decals soft enough to mess up by trying to straighten them out. I've learnt not to add too much decal softener. It does work well. I'd like to do that version with the black underside. It's not bad at all. I hope mine turns out as good as that. I'm no professional modeller. Just average.Well done.🙂👍🇭🇲🦘👋✌️ From Australia. No laughing matter! 🙂👋✌️👍🇭🇲🦘

You can try Tamiya extra thin cement on those bad decal areas where the decals are transparent....It melts them so BEWARE and be really gentle...but as a last ditch effort it can make them look a bit better...I would suggest experimenting with the technique first cos its very aggressive

Still building mine after 20+ years. Paragon fighter nose conversion. Plus a second with a bulged bomb bay and 2 stage Merlin conversion - again from Paragon. These got put on hold when HKM and Tamiya launched theirs, as I was reluctant to put any more time in to something that was so old and lacking by today's standard. Went back to them last year and both are now primed and ready for their respective camo schemes. The bulged bay, 2 stage Merlin version having the front glazing drilled to accept 4 .303 machine guns to represent one from the film "633 Squadron", which use TT.35's with glazing over painted and dummy guns installed - really obvious when you see them in the film ( apart from the one T.11 that had a solid nose originally so looks more like the fighter version).
Good job with the build. I've had that happen to me - why is it always the last decal to go on !!??

Well, you sure got a better result then I did, after building this same kit some years ago. At the time, it was the only 1/32 Mosquito out on the market. Luckily, I got my hands on the Tamiya Mossy in 1/32. I’m going to be able to do a much better job with that kit.

I also had the same problem with the decals when I built an old early 1970s 1/32 Revell Spitfire Mk 1 (DW-K) which I had stored away for 25 years. They all broke up, and I ended up spraying the roundels, fin flash and squadron codes on. Then I letraset the serial nos. on

    Nice work!
Considering the limitations of a kit that's 50+ years old, you did fine - don't be so hard on yourself!
The only thing that may have helped the decals is to put a gloss coat down on the areas where they are applied. Any shine will disappear after a couple of coats of matt varnish.

    • @scaleffect
      @scaleffect  День назад +1

There is gloss under them, I failed to film it (or mention it in the voice over). Didn't seem to help this time unfortunately. I'm not trying to be too hard on myself, but I did mess up and that's just how it goes sometimes. More often than not for me actually lol, but how else can I learn this hobby but to fail and try again next time.

  • @malethor8822

Also Microsol can help to put the decal on its place.

@scaleffect You are wellcome!! But I wanted to say Microset, not Microsol.
Microset (blue one) help to move the decal on surface while put It on place.
After Microset, Microsol (red one) adapt the decal to surface. Sorry for the mistake.

Enjoyed watching your build. I have the 2014 iteration of this kit in my stash. 30yr old decals misbehaving is not your fault.
They're reasonably cheap for what you get. I am thinking of getting another for spare parts. The Zoukei-Mura Ki-45 kit I have gives you 11/2 aircraft. Perhaps a Mossie kit would give me enough parts to complete the 2nd one. Maybe a 'what if' with V12s. We'll see.

Great effort nonetheless! I made this model way back in 1976, as I was and still are a big Mosquito fan (I even wrote a book about the aircraft published in 2012). The mode was a credible effort by Revell back in the day, but it does have its issues, the canopy for example is to tall. But hell it was the first large scale model of this aircraft and still looks impressive, if only because of the scale.

Looks like all the problem decals are on the black . Try removing them with masking tape then fix the black as needed and buy some aftermarket decals . Laying masking tape on the decal and rubbing it down and then pulling the tape off is often all that is needed to remove them .

I enjoyed your build video and sorry to hear about the decals. Has happened to me before. This suggestion is extreme, but it has worked for me. Please do this outside or in super well ventilated area and with proper protection… instead of lacquer thinner try airbrushing MEK over problem decal, using super fine and light coat. MEK WILL DISSOLVE styrene plastic and decals, hence the suggestion would be to experiment first again super light spray coat.

Man, this looks like it wasn’t the easiest kit ever. Great work though, it was really coming along nicely. And I’m really disappointed that I didn’t get to watch you sanding or installing the canopy parts. Heartbroken. Lol. Sorry about the decals buddy, always a crapshoot on these old kits. Wish they would’ve worked out for you. I’d never laugh about that. Sometimes we all have rough patches, just have to keep on building. Thanks for sharing!

That's a shame... Nice finish on what I gather is supposed to be a real dog of a kit. I've thought about buying this kit many times but the raised panel lines have always put me off. Maybe aftermarket decals next time, they don't have to cost a fortune. :)

I think you need to be a little less self-deprecating regarding this build. I think you've done a really nice job. This tooling is from 1971 and, therefore, not up to the standards that are expected today. Taking this into account, I think you've done well. Revell (UK) actually did a good job of producing the 'Mossie' in this scale. Superficially, it's an accurate representation of a B.IV. and makes an excellent blank canvas for those wanting to test their scratch building skills. The only noticeable issue is that the canopy is too tall. 1.5 to 2mm needs to be taken off the base/sill of the transparency to lower it to the correct height.
The tailwheel is correct. It did have a metal hub, and the tire profile with the ridges is an anti-shimmy type.
    Once again, great job. 👍

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I appreciate it. My self deprecation is normal lol, I'm under no illusions that I'm a great modeler. I do what I can and try to keep learning, and hopefully people like watching and learn something in turn as well.

I built this model as a kid back in the early seventies, in the UK, so it must have been on its first release. I remember that the canopy was horrible and the worst aspect of the model. Also, the decals and paint scheme was for a day-bomber, with the underside being either pale duck-egg green or blue as far as I remember. Was this scheme unique to Revell UK or the night-bomber scheme from a later issue?

    • @scaleffect
