  • Flight reviewing showing my electric conversion of the BUSA 1/3 SuperCub. If you cast your eyes back through the video's one of the first I did was of this same model but struggling along with the then 50cc gas engine it was powered with (RotoMotor 50cc Twin). That engine gave me nothing but trouble so after a year or so in storage I replaced it with a EME 70cc twin with a very sexy looking custom Zimmerman exhaust. It flew great on that but the only problem was it was still too loud for my club.
    At this point there was nothing for it but to convert her to electric as I A) didn't want to sell her as she's so much fun to fly and B) wanted to fly it at my club as much as possible in those long summer days (when this video was shot). Power now comes from a Turnigy Rotomax 50cc brushless outrunner using 2 x 6S 5000mah Turnigy Rhino packs for 12S and 8+ min flight times. ESC is a 160amp HV unit and all other electronics remain the same.
    Added to the model are the 3 blade full carbon Engle prop, 3 blade metal spinner, BIG bouncing wheels oh and the tail is now removable for transport.
    I'm happy with the performance now of the model so this one should be in the hanger for years to come. If you have any questions about the conversion, please just ask in the comments section below.

    Hey Stuart! Very nice Super Cub! I love the Air Top tires you put on it...I have the 8" on my H9 1/4 Super Cub. I like the bush plane look. Very well flown man...masterful. Those one wheels were perfect. I second your thoughts on assembly/disassembly. Twenty minutes for my H9. Still too long. Worth it once they are in the air though. 😄

      Hey Adam, yes, forgot the name of the wheels but they are indeed airtops. I brought them about 5 years ago for another project that was never completed and when I found them last year new in box in the garage I knew they'd be perfect for this Cub. And yes 20mins is not ideal, but I'm done working on this model now. If I wanted to I could strip it back and make the structure more suitable for quick assembly, but I've invested all the workshop time I want to on this model now.

      @@stuartwarnerc I don't blame you Stuart, when I fly the big ones I just plan on the timing involved form assembly. More of a production for sure.

    Brilliant scale Cub Stuart, I do miss the sound of a fuel engine, but she looked great in the sky. Nine minuet flight a nice time as well. 🫡

    Stuart, you do not have to worry about wing structure on a Balsa USA cub. I've had them for decades and have done everything with them you can think of with absolutely no concerns. You can bet that Balsa USA has also done everything imaginable to their cubs (and every plane they sell) during the design and testing phases. All you have to remember is to be sure to install the lower strut bolts prior to flying - that's important :)

      Thanks, yes you are right its proved to be rather stout, but I'm still just happy keeping aerobatics to a minimum with this one.

    Stuart. I've got a 96 inch Fairchild nitro plane getting ready to run it for my first time. I've never flown a gasser and really like the reliability of the electric. I may convert it to electric we will see how the nitro motor runs

    • @stuartwarnerc
      @stuartwarnerc  Год назад +1

      Certainly try it first, I love my gas and Nitro models, but due to my club restrictions electric was the only option for me on this one.

    Which one do you like better - electric or gasoline-powered, and if gasoline then which one RotorMotor 500 or EME 70? BTW where is EME 70CC video?
    Thank you, Stuart!

    I am building A balsa USA 1/4 scale cub and I was wondering if you have any ideas for an electric mor. Thanks for your help

    • @richard1472
      @richard1472 Год назад

      A typical quarter-scale Cub will come in at 15 to 18 lb, usually. A 1.20 cu. in. four-stroke was a common power source. So, the equivalent 20 CC electric system should do the job.
      Unless, of course, you've already figured it out.
      Happy landings!

    There's a strange sound when you apply more throttle, is the prop/spinner not perfectly balanced or is it because it's a gas engine prop? The bigger wheels look nicer than the original ones, just watched the old video again. 😎

    • @stuartwarnerc
      @stuartwarnerc  Год назад

      Hello, yes there is and you could well be right on what's causing it, though both prop and spinner were pretty well balanced I thought. But there's not much in the way of vibration and I'll not be flying at full throttle much anyway 😉

    Hi Stuart my club sound for motors is 82 disables you don't know by any chance you know the disables for rotomax 50cc by any chance i already fly 1/4 scale models that electric 30cc class but if can get sound down i can go into 1/3 scale any thoughts

      Hi Lee, in my club it’s 84db and this model with this motor it quieter than an EDF so you have nothing to worry about.

    Why is assembly taking so long? Just curious but 40 minutes seems excessive even with a 1/3 scale model but then again I have never owned one so big.

    • @stuartwarnerc
      @stuartwarnerc  Год назад +2

      It was 40mins originally, now with some changes and practice I’ve got it down to 20mins, but that’s mostly as the tail is now removable also (a necessity for transport and storage) and due to the tail rigging. Plus it doesn’t have a wing mounting spar so attaching the wing via the functional struts/braces takes its time also. But insight of all that, she’s worth keeping, though definitely only a summer bird 😉

    • @ReefHopper
      @ReefHopper Год назад

      @@stuartwarnerc have you shared the mods to make the tail removable yet? I would love to see how it works.
