Also when gunplay says he ain’t seen the back of his eyelids for the past 72hrs. Thats part of the grind to come up out of poverty but also the result of his conscience and paranoia due to the way he trying to get money or just as a result of being in that dangerous environment. This song is so layered which really plays back to the reality that a lot of inner city people live day to day. My mom worked hard to get us out of that environment and I’m working hard to stay out of it and it isn’t easy. No one wants to depend on the county nor do we want to stay in that messed up condition. That type of hunger/drive to get out isn’t something that can be cosplayed. It’s different. That’s why Kendrick is a different kind of beast.

So I just discovered Kendrick Lamar when “Not Like Us” premiered. (I know-where have I been?)😂 But I fell in love with, “Not Like Us”. Then I went down the rabbit hole. I have been listening to everything he’s ever written . Wow! Talk about Genius! I was there when Rap came out but after Tupac was murdered, I stopped listening because The Industry began to ruin it. This is an old song but one of my all times favorite Kendrick tracks. I have this in my all time favorite tracks playlist. So dope and ahead of its time Kendrick was in full form here.
I find it wildly fascinating to hear you break down a song I've listened to for over a decade and I am STILL learning new things about it. The layers are insane. Kendrick Lamar's music can convey many meanings to different people. Thanks for the breakdown.
Right. I feel like drake collaborates with everybody and no lie there are a lotta hits. Although he has a lot of songs, that Doesn't mean anything compared to the art that kendrick puts into his songs.
@KnoxHill Are we glossing over the idea that "he" is 2PAC, "she" is Hip-Hop, and "Sandbox" is the culture? He was raised in the hip-hop culture "next" to pac when pac was representing the violence in the culture, while the culture gave birth to the next generation of emcees inspired by all of that. Makes sense given that 2PAC is the one on the news when he mentions "seen you on the news", and along with most the other bars that made reference to the father figure. Doubly makes sense when we know Kendrick sees himself as the second coming of PAC, and so imagining himself as the "son" makes sense artistically with the religious parallels to christ.
Youch. Heavy, heavy take. I'm not smart enough to even fathom how deep what you said was. It tracks right down to the soul, though, and it makes me appreciate Kendrick and his fans who understand on an atom-like level. Thank you.
