Hey Mark, great decision. Doing 1 review a month giving yourself time to digest is something I've thought you should do for a while. It takes a lot of the pressure of, gives you time to talk about many other things in between that are less dense or that you might have clearer thoughts on, I'm keen for this. This would allow you to go into more depth about specific moments too. For as neat as the 'Blind Review' idea was, It just doesn't quite suit the scripted, highly produced video style you're so good at, it's just a reaction channel type thing. I think me and many other fans would just prefer a proper review on the stories we already love.
"He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy." - Guts Rest in Peace, Kentaro Muira, The Struggler - July 11, 1966 - May 6, 2021
I'm so glad you included the end of the arc and discussed it in detail. That transition from calm and collected badass to "I've set someone else down the same miserable path as myself" is heartbreaking, but really does show so much of Guts' character in a few panels.
I liked the part where the editor went “I run out of ideas for this” lol 😝 The golden arc is going to be so much easier on our god tier editor. And I also like the more subtle hint/spoiler than were shown in the one piece reviews lmao 🤣
The aesthetic is heavily inspired by Yoshitaka Amano. He's mostly known as the Final Fantasy character designer, but take a look at his old movie "Angel's Egg" and some of his other work.
Mark: be ready. This story will make you laugh, cry, jump with excitement, etc You will see the darkest aspects of humanity and this is nothing like what you’ve reviewed before
@@rahl163 right, everyone can have an opinion. So write it as an opinion, not a fact. Maybe write it like "guts is the best protagonist that I've ever seen" - like this, this is not a controversial or exaggerated sentence, this is a fair judgment. There's literally millions of books, movies, series, mangas and so on with fictional characters and I seriously doubt that he has consumed every piece of fiction existent to be able to say that guts is the best protagonist from any piece of fiction ever created.
"I don't like to dwell on very serious subject matter all too often" Said Mark right before reviewing freaking Berserk (I can't wait to watch your reviews, this is going to be a hell of a ride)
I get the feeling the line: *_"What the hell is that thing?! Kill it with fire!!"_* is going to become a regular catchphrase for you in this series, Mark.
"Ever struggling, ever pushing for freedom." You, sir, have landed on the core of all that is Berserk. I mean, the character's name being Guts is pretty on the nose.
I don't know of any other mangakas that utilize blacks and dark shading as beautifully or as dramatically as Miura. Not to mention the layouts. I want to see his reaction to the bonfire of dreams and so many iconic Berserk pages.
Not gonna lie, hearing him say he's going to take a month to read and review each arc made me incredibly excited for this series. Unlike any other manga, this one is worth the time. Please, I hope you enjoy it Mark.
Well we're not here to have our opinions affirmed, we're here to see his own unique opinion on it and if he doesnt like it, it will still be interesting to see/hear why
I’ve cried a lot since Miura’s passing and the end of this video made me do so all over again. This is evidence that his work will continue to inspire forever, and that fills me with so much hope. Thanks for such a beautiful video Mark. I can’t wait to see the next one.
I do love how Guts puts on this act, trying so hard to be heartless and uncaring, because he knows things go bad for anyone he gets to know, it's common for the loner archetype to push people away for angst reasons, but with him its so clear that he can't stand watching people die because of him being around
Plus even aside from that, the golden age arc really highlights how much letting hismelf get attached to people lead to his pain.... fucking GRIFFITH, man...
The Black Swordsman Arc is honestly my favorite arc in Berserk, and rereading it after understanding the previous events and the events that have yet to take place are quite the treat! It reforms almost the entire experience of the Arc and the complexity that you understand from Guts I also love that this is Guts when he is at his most lost state and where he is trying to cope the most with his trauma and overwhelmingly uphill battle
Guts’ humanity is expertly questioned in threee ways: 1) “how is he swinging that slab or iron?” 2) “how is he fighting all those enemies alone?” 3) “I can’t even read his facial expressions” His otherness is portrayed as cool at first, but transitions into questionable if not scary.
The first 2 questions get explained in the golden age arc, and that arc is the next after this one, the last question it’s more of an artistic choice, and believe me, the why of his acts and his character development is one of the most worked in all of manga history
I don't know about the third one, it was always easy to me to empathize with guts, yeah a lot of mixed feelings, but that's exactly what he's going through.
Susumu Hirasawa, the musician who composed the music for the Berserk series (composed music for other animes like Paranoia Agent and paprika) is amazingly good with versatility based on his music which is astonishing to witness. Once you hear another song from him or something else he composed, it's always attaining a different flow and vibe that ring's distinctively than the last piece of music he composed/sung.
I told myself that when Berserk ended I would read it all. I opened twitter and saw his passing and I got emotional. Not knowing the story, but seeing a mangaka so passionate for his story. Thank you Miura
Never been so excited for a series. I love all the detail that you put into the video. It could be a 5 minute video glossing over the guts and gore of berserk but you gave berserk what it needed with this. Thank you
@Shin Shaman I just remember when he did the poor for Joe Joe’s hunter hunter Naruto and AOT everybody in the comments were saying berserk berserk berserk and I was telling all of them there’s no way he’s doing berserk it’s too graphic for RUclips and I was wrong and I’m like holy shit he’s actually doing it
Given the production that this clearly needs, I'm more than fine with this becoming a monthly thing. Given the current state of Berserk it's also nice to keep remembering it for the rest of the year.
Miura made the dark angsit, big sword welding architipe. Then ask a simple question, what could possibly have happened to this man to justify his actions and outlook. A struggle of unimaginable proportions…unimaginable to all save one man Miura.
Berserk is, alongside One Piece, some of my favourite fictional reading, ever. The story of Berserk, the struggles of Guts and what we see him go through, his slow redemption to become human again, its beautiful, but it fucking hurts to read too, cause a lot of what Guts goes through, can be reflected in people's day to day struggle to keep on going through their own hardships and battles. Some people lose that battle, while others have the tenacity to keep going like Guts. Berserk also spurred on and inspired some of the best known and well made games and series in the dark fantasy genre, setting a precedent other manga could only dream of achieving. The sheer impact of Kentaro Miura and Berserk will be felt for years to come, and I truly feel Miura is one of the greatest Mangaka history has seen so far. His dedication to the medium and his contribution to the world of manga can only be respected. I was fucking devastated for the entire week after the announcement of his passing. I sincerely wish nothing but the best for his family, and hope they're given the time needed to grieve without the internet bombarding them with questions related to Berserk. Rest in peace, Miura. #ThankYouMiura
I wondered a few years ago how an interview between and old Eichiro Oda and Kentarou Miura would have been, talking about their creations. Sadly, it will never happen and now One Piece is the last one standing. RIP Kentarou Miura
What I love most about berserk isn't the art, the grim storytelling or the brutal violence. It's the notion that no matter what your circumstances are. No matter how bleak things seem to be. You should never ever stop fighting. Because even if you've lost things you fought for, there are always still things in the world worth living for
@coulson lloyd-Clare Its uncomfortably brutal, but it's also the turning point for Guts, starting his turn away from the loner Black Swordsman before the Conviction Arc kicks off.
Lost Children is like a little taste of Black Swordsman Arc, just to recap and get us acquainted back with his previous characteristics before the giant change to the story and Guts' outlook. It's genius story telling. Miura really knew what he was doing.
@@ToneSherpa It's a taste of the black swordsmans arc, but it's also the point where Guts finally starts to come to terms with the fact that he ISN'T just a single-minded murderous lone survivor. He meets Jill, a girl who shares the experience of having her closest friend achieve her dreams by sacrificing the innocent to become an Apostle, and having someone who to relate to on that level basically reignites Guts' ability to feel empathy moving forward.
@@PainCausingSamurai yep. that's why it's such a great mini arc. it gives you the full experience from Black Swordsman Guts, to a little bit of a sneak peak of the progression to the end of Conviction.
God bless Kentaro's soul. He had passion in what he loved and he put in every strand of his emotions within Berserk. You made a great decision here, Mark. Reading this manga will change you, and once you get to The Golden Age, ....brace yourself for that change. That's all I can say.
As well as millions of other people around the world. This is my favorite love story I've ever consumed. And genuinely, thank you for covering it mark. I hope you can enjoy it and get soemthing wonderful out it. Love and respect to Mr. Kentaro Miura
Two of the most influential stories in my life are Dragon Ball Z and Berserk, so seeing this channel make loads of content on the first and about to make loads of content on the second means so much to me and most likely a lot of others
When I first read the scene of sad guts after the encounter with the count, I was confused as to why he felt that way and after reaching a certain point on the story I could finally understand why guts is hurting for the inside ever since the start of the story. Kentaro miura is a genius and always will be.
Hi, im normally not the person who watches a review, and then instantly feel emotions to the story the review is about. But this rewiev was different it felt like i had guts' pain and horror in my hands... The sword on his back being the only weapon to combat this horror and pain, and the conlict in his mind.. This is truely a fantastic review, i have never myself read beserk but after this i will thank you for an amazing video
The fact that these berserk videos will be a one a month kinda deal has me feeling hopeful not just to give the absolute legend of editorsan more time but also more time for you to formulate your own opinions and provide more coverage. A lot of the complaints from hxh was how you completely failed to mention characters and plot points which has always been a criticism of your weekly series from just how brutal of a schedule you've had to adapt to to play with the youtube algorithm So I really hope you're able to cover more via giving yourself more time and if you do get affected by an arc or anything else that causes some fatigue there's no harm in taking a break like you did during one piece or splitting an art in multiple parts. Still best of luck with berserk and I'm still looking forward to you and the amazing editor san tackling this series.
@@adrianpg4460 It shows Guts more human side, he's disgusted that he just butchered a young girl. Which plays more into his backstory explained in the Golden Age Arc.
@@apemayor3046 I disagree, it's especially important in the Black Swordsman Arc specifically as it characterizes Guts to be effected and disgusted at the fact he killed something in child form. Remember that this is the absolute start of the story so seeing how Guts is actually effected by what he's doing instead of being as brainlessly edgy as Coldsteel the hedgehog helps making the reader avoid rolling their eyes.

Personally like this style of video a bit more than the anime scenes being someone who watches a ton of Black Clover and One Piece manga review (manga reviews in general why I'm here) I feel that the mangaka has such a nice style and draws action well enough for this to workout for you.
I like the editing in the second half of the video. Being able to experience the panels of the manga seemingly alongside Mark was entertaining and felt rewarding to follow along with.
Thank You Miura-sensei. I started reading Berserk a few months ago, and it has been an insane ride. He's truly one of the greatest mangaka to ever live.
The Black Swordsman arc is in my opinion the worst part of all Berserk, it's still a 10/10, that's a testament of what an amazing piece of literature Berserk really is. It only gets better from here :).
I'm just going to say this editor-san is so extra with these. The quality would not be much worse with longer pauses on single panels or art work or far easier to do editing but they always go one step beyond just to polish it really nicely in a short period of time. it's really impressive and extremely hard working. I cannot imagine the work load it is to make one of these every week. Obviously Mark is also top shelf and the quality of his essay style review is world class.

I'm so glad you included the end of the arc and discussed it in detail. That transition from calm and collected badass to "I've set someone else down the same miserable path as myself" is heartbreaking, but really does show so much of Guts' character in a few panels.

Mark is one of the few content creators to always mention his editor, love the appreciation they get
Guts’ humanity is expertly questioned in threee ways:
1) “how is he swinging that slab or iron?”
2) “how is he fighting all those enemies alone?”
3) “I can’t even read his facial expressions”
His otherness is portrayed as cool at first, but transitions into questionable if not scary.
The first 2 questions get explained in the golden age arc, and that arc is the next after this one, the last question it’s more of an artistic choice, and believe me, the why of his acts and his character development is one of the most worked in all of manga history
That scene where he's fighting Rosine and he looks like a monster. God damn that shit is awesome.
He's also composed for a berserk game with the english name bein "Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage"
Susumu Hirasawa and Berserk are inextricably linked

What I love most about berserk isn't the art, the grim storytelling or the brutal violence.
It's the notion that no matter what your circumstances are. No matter how bleak things seem to be. You should never ever stop fighting. Because even if you've lost things you fought for, there are always still things in the world worth living for
I seriously can’t get over how much I love Berserk.

The entire Conviction arc was pure brutal. Can’t wait on his thoughts about the priest and Farnese
