Yes The Last Kingdom does justice to Alfred. He after all, is considered in history as “Alfred The Great”. A label historical Saxon roots use sparingly to represent the few who did “Great” historical things for progress of a civilization. As much as i loved Vikings, i didn’t feel the vision approached his character with respect to his foundational status. This is an Alfred that represents much better for the Saxon view.

it's a part of this shows amazing character development where at the start you see where Alfred and co are coming from however as time on you start to see that their mistrusting of Uhtred starts to become unreasonable and starts to be more about faith and religion and the fact that Uhtred is a Pagan over him actually being untrustworthy considering he proves that many times over and it gets to the point where you start to see Uhtred's point of view more so than Alfred's. same goes with Brida and Ragnar at the start you want Uhtred to side with them over Alfred however the more you look at it the more unreasonable Brida and Young Ragnar's demands of Uhtred are.
My friend told me to watch this show (three seasons were out) and she told me how much she loved Uhtred. When I watched first season I was like wtf???? this guy is a dick! Lol - after seeing the entire series I now understand what she meant. His growth is really incredible. Season 4 Uhtred is everything lol
@@blakec8549 In the books, yes. Uhtred was born 856. Alfred was crowned in 871 (at the age of 22). So in the books, Uhtred would have been 15. While these ages are historically accurate, it would seem strange to our modern eye and way of live.
@@Mek_Alenes nice. I get the strangeness of it to some people but it doesn't bother me. I was just curious if what I heard was true. He certainly acts like a teenager. Not in the moody sense, just in how he reacts emotionally to things.
I really think the show portrays Uhtred's growth very well. When he is young, as he is now, he is rash, impatient, and often makes poor decisions, but throughout the entirety of the show, whatever he does, he does with great passion. As the show progresses, you'll see how he learns and develops into a brilliant leader. (I tried to keep that as vague as possible to avoid spoilers.) Also, it's great to see how everyone underestimates Aelfred due to his illness, except perhaps Aelfric. Despite being in almost constant discomfort from his illness, he is brilliant, cunning, and absolutely ruthless. As Aelfric put it, "the bastard thinks".
Fun fact about Aetholwold ( the king's son ) and Aelswith ( Alfred's wife ), you are going to hate them a lot and it is a statement of how good the 2 actors are because I've watched some cast interviews and they are fun as hell, especially the actress who plays Alfred's wife, she is a ball of joy and laughter
21:50 At this point, Uhtred is supposed to be in his late teens, or at least that's how old he is in the first book the first four episodes are based on.
I always liked Uhtred teaching Alfreds army how to form a shieldwall properly, it's a realistic and historically accurate portayal of 'work smarter, not harder.'
It's been speculated that Alfred had Crohn's disease his digestive system was unable to process food rich in protein, like meat, this is pretty tough in a period where meat was central to the diet.
The story of Uthred is incredible! The development of this and other characters is one of the best in TV history ❤ Thank you so much for your reactions on this show ❤ greetings from Germany❤
The fact that it is believed that Alfred had Crohn’s disease, or something very like that, IMO makes him even more of a amazing historical character. The fact that he accomplished so much while dealing with such a debilitating condition is incredible.
About Alfred…. He is tremendously important in the history of England. My favorite aspect of this show is the author’s and screenwriter’s telling of his story and the extraordinary job the actors who play Alfred, Aelswith etc. do in bringing that story to life in a vivid way, even if the facts aren’t precisely accurate some of the time. The show I feel has reached so many people who would never have watched a BBC show version of the same story… nothing against those of course.
LETS GOOOOO! So great to see you're enjoying it as much as I did. Keep watching, there's a lot to come😁🤯The friendship between Uhtred and Leofric is one of great things about this show as well as the relationship between Alfred and Uhtred.
Strictly speaking Question: "Did you kill my father?" Question: "Did you kill my family?" Statement: "I will not ask a second time." He did _not_ ask a second time.
Since you were asking about Uhtred's age; in the books he was like 16 at this point. Also, I don't think it's mentioned in the show because they skip the part of the book where it matters but Odda the Younger is his cousin.
Alfred's tactics are all power moves, especially during the peace negotiations!! You are right he is smart, intelligent and calmly objective when everyone else is losing it!! Leofric is the one character and his relationship with Uhtred, after Alfred, Beocca and Brida that will draw you in more into The Last Kingdom.
the Last Kingdom truly is what Game of throne and Vikings should have been it starts great and only gets consistently better as the seasons go on. Uhtred is easily one of THE best written characters in fictional history both in the books and equally in the show and yes i say EQUALLY because i think that the books while masterpieces in of themselves do have alot of character and story beats which really didn't work and the show actively improved upon that. the show is one of those rare instances where it is EQUAL to the source material not better or worse it's stands side by side with it and both do nothing but prop the other up and elevate them. it's truly a testament to the talent and skill of the cast crew and the writers of this amazing show that was able to give us a way more satisfying and enjoyable show than both Game of thrones and Vikings combined with a fraction of the budget of both shows. TLK was always the sleeper hit that was secretly better than both the mainstream shows in nearly everyway
surely you don't believe that the last kingdom is better than GOT or Vikings right? Game of thrones had 6 GREAT seasons, those 6 seasons made GOT the best show ever. Vikings had about 5 great seasons (season 1, 2, 3, 4, 5A, & 6B) The last kingdom had age inconsistencies, brida was annoying as hell even though that's not what the show intended, athelflaed is annoying, they forgot about uhtred's final child Osbert until season 5 finale of I'm not mistaken. I still loved TLK GOT is a 10/10 if we exclude season 7 and 8 Vikings is a 9/10 if we exclude season 5B and 6A The last kingdom is a 7.5/10 if exclude the sequel movie (7 kings must die).
There are so many unexpected character deaths in this show, it’s not like GoT where there is a bit of foreshadowing beforehand but the deaths happen so subtlety and so quickly you’ll be left sitting there just saying “Wait, wtf just happened?!”
David Dawson who plays Alfred is one hell of an actor. European actors always have such a great way with pronunciation but Dawson just nails his lines. “I need meat. Your lord needs feeding”. Eliza Butterworth who plays Queen Aelswith is equally as amazing. Enjoy this show S & N.
In the books, Uhtred is 10 when he's captured by Ragner, 16 when the hall is burned down. Then he travels the country for a year or two or so, so he is probably 18 right now. In the show, I guess, he's supposed to be in his early twenties. And Alfred won't eat meat because of his stomach problems. He was already called weak and ill by the Danes here in this show, because of this. His (probably) Crohn's Desease is treated by not eating meat - so no one else is allowed to eat meat nearby him as well.
Uhtred in season 1 for the most part is around 16-18 it's the only time in the last kingdom where he's younger than he looks (Alex dreymond was 20ish in season 1) considering that the shows timeskips end up making him older than he looks. by season 5 he's supposed to be 60+ yet he still looks like he's mid 30s.
Nikki, You are the 1st person I have ever heard in my life pull a "Don't tell mom the Babysitters dead" quote out of nowhere. That is awesome. I have used "I'm on top of it Rose" for years.
Love seeing you guys react to this so excited to see what your reactions are on whats to come. This show just gets better and better with each season in my opinion so excited to see where things go.
This is one of the most underrated show ever. Trust me you'll love it so much. Season 5 just ended a couple of weeks ago. It was last season, but now we are expecting a movie to come out next year. Really excited for this journey with you guys.
Didn’t know you guys were watching this show until this noti popped up haha. Absolutely love this show! Definitely gonna go on this ride with you guys!
I think the guy who plays Alfred would also make a magnificent Stannis Baratheon. Very much how I imagined Stannis from the books, considering everyone’s a little younger in them.
As someone who has watched the series 3 times, and read the books. I am loving watching it through fresh eyes. Getting your perspective as first time viewers knowing nothing about the show. Also I’ve never watch Vikings. Because I love the last Kingdom so much, I was afraid it would be a let down. But seeing you guys, I now think I should give it a shot.
Yes u should. They’re two different stories with some naming similarities but unequivocally different. Yet both are amazing shows. Guarantee u will love Vikings just as much. Final two seasons aren’t quite as good as the first 4 or 5 but still very entertaining. Enjoy!
Definitely try Vikings. It is told from the Scandinavian perspective, rather than the Saxon viewpoint of this show. Vikings delves into the supernatural at times, emulating the pagan believes of the Northmen. It plays rather loose with history, but it hits the tone of mysticism just right and has a great family story.
"' You've been half my life. All of my madness..." I'm so thrilled you two are responding to this. Such a great excuse to rewatch. I've seen all but the last season but felt the need to rewatch, as it's been a while and have learned recently the benefit of a slow watch--one or two episodes a week. For these series I binged originally it really adds something, so thank you.
It’s known from historical records that Alfred was constantly ill. Historians believe he suffered from Crohn’s Disease - a nasty disorder of the stomach, intestines and bowels.
I check every day to see if you have uploaded the next Last Kingdom video so I am stoked! I did see it earlier this morning but I wanted to enjoy it fully so waited till after work & now here we are, feet up, ice cold brew in one hand & a rather fat doobie at the ready, time to take it all in and enjoy. As always thank you for the work you put in keeping us entertained, Blessings from the UK.
I love how back them your word meant everything. Your oath was your bond and it said everything about you. Watching these shows make you think about how history is taught to us their s Are so many intricacies about culture religion politics
Yes, oaths were sacred and to break your sworn word was to make yourself into a criminal worthy of the death penalty. Oath breakers were seen as extremely bad and unlucky!
@@patriciamayhew6321 which i think is awesome. I think your word should be your bond. It would save the world so many headaches. If you can't keep your word people wouldn't trust you in any way back then thays just not the case today
been many years since i read the first book, but i remember he was about 16 when ragnar the fearless died in the first episode, pretty sure he is still a teen in this episode
This is a great show- and with characters to come, I don’t get it when people say they dipped out after a season or two… to each their own! Lots of good stuff to come!
Uhh, dipped out? Nah, I disagree with that. True, sadly some great characters in the show meet untimely demises, but the world is full of complex and/or conflicted characters.
You wondered how old Uhtred is. Going by the events in the books as they happen in the show, Uhtred is 16 or 17 when the hall is burned. He is 21 at the end of S1. He is likely around 17 or 18 in this episode
Alfred can’t eat meat because of his stomach affliction so that’s why he can’t eat it even though he craves it. That adds up with real history as well, he was often sickly and had excruciating stomach pains. Historians believe he probably had Crohn’s Disease.
You should also look into Britain's history of that time and just what Alfred did to our nation. What you called previously as romantic ideas by Alfred is actually history.
But it was Alfred who had that romantic vision of a unified England and although he didn't get to see it through to completion he is the one who set it all in motion.
@@lunagal the series is based on a book series so the movie will cover the final two books. The dream of Alfred and the story of Uhtred is completed in the new movie :) I believe it's called "Seven Kings Must Die"
i have to say i love this show so much, even more then vikings for me it's just top 3 of best shows i've watched, and i really enjoy ur reactions waiting for it everytime love u guys
Uhtreds swords name is “Serpents Breath.” Because the way the metal looks. This is all explain in the books, which are amazing. I love watching your reaction to the series.
I know I may be repeating myself from an earlier episode of this show that you two reacted to, but I feel the need to say again that this King Alfred + Uhtred will come to share a bond that'll likely leave you both on the verge of tears, if not shedding them. I sincerely hope you continue to watch this show because it's outstanding.
I am so happy you guys are watching this finally. You’re going to love this series. It’s very gritty and far too underrated. This surpassed GOT as my fave show. And I can’t wait for the movie to wrap the series up to come out. Y’all are gonna be super invested. And this show is equally as heartbreaking as GOT so be prepared.
As others have said, this series is more faithful to history than Vikings. But that doesn't mean Bernard Cornwell, the author of the books this series is based on, is afraid to mess with history a bit for the sake of a good story. Case in point: in reality, Æthelwold wasn't passed over in the succession because he was a disappointment or a drunk. He was passed over because he was still an infant at the time of his father's death. The real King Æthelred was only in his mid 20s when he died. Not complaining. Æthelwold the drunken lecher scheming to steal the crown from Alfred is a whole lot more entertaining than baby Æthelwold lying in a crib somewhere.
Little history fact for you because i know you guys enjoy that, king ethelred is buried in my local town Wimborne Minster, he is buried in the wall of the minster (church)
If you haven't seen King Arthur (2004) starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightly, I highly recommend it. If you like Last Kingdom you will love this movie.
Thanks for reacting, great show! Alfred and Uthred are awesome! Portraying of Alfred has been done great in this show, he was real character after all, Alfred The Great. Uthred in the other hand as a fictional character has an great story aswell! Destiny is All!
Historically, there was an Uhtred “The Bold” of Babbenburg (although that name has been changed some) that our Uhtred is based on. His actual castle in Northern England is quite beautiful.
Uhtred is only around 18 or so if my book-memory serves me well. And his sword, his swords name is Serpent-Breath, his saex(knife) is named Wasp-Sting. This show lacks so many unique details that the books constantly brought to the forefront. The other character lacking from this during this period is Ivar The Boneless.
I wish I watched this when it first came out on the BBC, I've always wondered what Brida actually said at around the 5:35 mark before it got dubbed over with a line from a later episode.
King Alfred the Great is one of our Monarchs that are still talked about to this day. He is one of a few that have Legendary status...... William the conqueror, Richard I (Richard the Lionheart), Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria. Alfred the Great was the Daddy. I`m sure I`ve heard our current Queen can trace her ancestry back to Alfred.

Yup, in the novels, he's only 15 when Alfred was crowned.
I like that they cast Germans to play the main Saxon characters (Brida, Uthred). It gives them those nice accents. Greets from Germany.
Alfred is awesome 👏🏻 his ability to CALMLY defeat his enemies with a soft spoken tone is what makes him so interesting
Guess you didn't know that the first two seasons were actually produced by the BBC! That's why it's so good!
@@susansisson366 omg! No I Did not!
Utreds internal conflict between Saxon and Dane remains a theme through the entire series… it’s what makes his character so compelling
Ive said it tens of times, but ill say it again. David Dawson as Alfred is literally one of my top 5 characters of all time.
I completely agree!!
LETS GOOOOO! So great to see you're enjoying it as much as I did. Keep watching, there's a lot to come😁🤯The friendship between Uhtred and Leofric is one of great things about this show as well as the relationship between Alfred and Uhtred.
Strictly speaking
Question: "Did you kill my father?"
Question: "Did you kill my family?"
Statement: "I will not ask a second time."
He did _not_ ask a second time.
Leofric is the one character and his relationship with Uhtred, after Alfred, Beocca and Brida that will draw you in more into The Last Kingdom.
the Last Kingdom truly is what Game of throne and Vikings should have been
it starts great and only gets consistently better as the seasons go on.
I still loved TLK
GOT is a 10/10 if we exclude season 7 and 8
Vikings is a 9/10 if we exclude season 5B and 6A
The last kingdom is a 7.5/10 if exclude the sequel movie (7 kings must die).
There are so many unexpected character deaths in this show, it’s not like GoT where there is a bit of foreshadowing beforehand but the deaths happen so subtlety and so quickly you’ll be left sitting there just saying “Wait, wtf just happened?!”
There are some cool twists and turns coming. It's REALLY an awesome series - glad you're enjoying it!!
Can I just say that the "I'm right on top of it, Rose" comment made me lol. Great reaction, guys!
Same lol!!
Really glad that you guys are liking the series so far.
Thinking of getting back into it myself. I stopped at season 3. Need to finish the last two.
You should. One of few shows to get even better as it goes on with a great ending!
@@maxbarber2341 Not technically over yet either :) The series wrapped up well enough but there is still a movie upcoming, "Seven Kings Must Die"
Uhtred was 10 or 12 in episode 1 (before the transition) he's about 19-24 here so he's basically a teenager / young adult in season 1.
I’ve seen the series and glad you two are enjoying it as well. Underrated show. It gets better trust me. Enjoy the ride. Destiny is all
Nikki, You are the 1st person I have ever heard in my life pull a "Don't tell mom the Babysitters dead" quote out of nowhere. That is awesome. I have used "I'm on top of it Rose" for years.
The show is based on the 13 book series from Bernard Cornwell
Uhtred was his grand grand grand... father....
It's so historical...
Trust me from someone who has watched the series four times and read two of the books this series is so great
Didn’t know you guys were watching this show until this noti popped up haha. Absolutely love this show! Definitely gonna go on this ride with you guys!
I think the guy who plays Alfred would also make a magnificent Stannis Baratheon. Very much how I imagined Stannis from the books, considering everyone’s a little younger in them.
Enjoying rewatching this amazing show with you two. It just gets better and better.
I'm a member of a Facebook fan group of The Last Kingdom. I recommended your RUclips channel. 👍🏽
Not gonna lie been checking on here like every few hours for the last few days for another last kingdom reaction lol
Same 😅
I'm so happy you guys like this show 😍
Loving these reactions. One of my favorite shows from Netflix. Can’t wait for y’all to get more into this season, & future ones. 🤗
This Alfred is truly the great
You got so many good characters to come I can’t wait
Remember, The Last Kingdom is a slow-burn. It takes some time to be fully invested.
EVERYTIME TLK drops I'm at work. Ahhh the suffering! 😭😆😆 Already gave a thumbs up. Can't wait to get home tonight and watch. ❤
Buckle up you are in for a great ride with this much underappreciated series. It never got enough publicity.
“Floki was kind of a good dude.”
Floki murders Aethelstan, by literally stabbing him in the back, out of jealousy…😳🙄😳
Lol. True
He killed Athelstan with an axe as he was kneeling down to take the blow. No backstabbing involved. 😉
Because of your last 2 reaction videos, I started watching the series again
This show just keeps getting better each episode
I love how back them your word meant everything. Your oath was your bond and it said everything about you. Watching these shows make you think about how history is taught to us their s
Are so many intricacies about culture religion politics
Yes, oaths were sacred and to break your sworn word was to make yourself into a criminal worthy of the death penalty. Oath breakers were seen as extremely bad and unlucky!
@@patriciamayhew6321 which i think is awesome. I think your word should be your bond. It would save the world so many headaches. If you can't keep your word people wouldn't trust you in any way back then thays just not the case today
Beyond excited for every upload of this!
Watching this show long enough you start talking like them in their accent 😂
TLK is so fun! Glad y'all are watching this one.
This Ubbe is WAY scarier than the one from Vikings lol
been many years since i read the first book, but i remember he was about 16 when ragnar the fearless died in the first episode, pretty sure he is still a teen in this episode
I love this show! glad you'll are watching it before the movie comes out!
@@ronweber1402 Romantic for the time maybe but not sure that's how I would have named it maybe idealistic not much romantic in that era
You guys are going to love this just as much as Vikings, FYI, a moving will be coming out at the end of the year to finalize the series.
I thought the series finale wrapped it all pretty well. I was not disappointed. What are they going to do with a movie?
@@lunagal the series is based on a book series so the movie will cover the final two books. The dream of Alfred and the story of Uhtred is completed in the new movie :)
I believe it's called "Seven Kings Must Die"
Please continue with the show, love your reactions
i have to say i love this show so much, even more then vikings for me it's just top 3 of best shows i've watched, and i really enjoy ur reactions waiting for it everytime love u guys
Just finished the series for the second time. Now I’m watching with you guys. My favorite Netflix series by far.
One of the few shows that gets better season by season so happy you guys are watching it
This is such an awesome show! Just wait till yall get through all 5 seasons then the movie coming in 2023.
After Vinings, this series is really heartbreaking and incredible, the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, is simply powerfull
Saludos desde Chile!!
Frail Alfred kicked butt in that negotiation.
Little history fact for you because i know you guys enjoy that, king ethelred is buried in my local town Wimborne Minster, he is buried in the wall of the minster (church)
17:23: in viking language it mean, "speak while you still can". (With deep serious skando hunter eyes)
I think Uthred is only 19 so he is young, which is why Alfred has more maturity than Uthred who is brash and impulsive.
@@lunagal Yes I read about that, but he lived different time than Alfred and was not captured by Vikings etc.
Uhtred of Bebbanburg born circa 970 - died 1016
Alfred The Great born 849 - died 899
Uhtred is only around 18 or so if my book-memory serves me well.
And his sword, his swords name is Serpent-Breath, his saex(knife) is named Wasp-Sting. This show lacks so many unique details that the books constantly brought to the forefront.
The other character lacking from this during this period is Ivar The Boneless.
I wish I watched this when it first came out on the BBC, I've always wondered what Brida actually said at around the 5:35 mark before it got dubbed over with a line from a later episode.
So glad you guys are doing this show.
I caught that Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead Reference, Nikki! “Right on top of that, Rose!”
This show is so friggin good. I am so glad you are finally watching and enjoying it. Feels a little like the good ole Witcher days.
One of the best shows I've ever seen
Hallucinogens is common in a lot of old religions. Even some early christians and modern kabbalist's have used drugs to get closer to god or gods.
Brida, such a tortured soul throughout the series. 😢

"A year is not forever"
uhm.. yeah.. about that :D
Just throwing this out there... "Bedazzled" is an underrated romantic comedy. Starring Brendon Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley. Hilarious!
Your cat "Ubba" is sooo pretty.😍
