Nice to see the fish at least somewhat active in those riffles in the winter. I always do better in that location in the riffles and not in the slow bend below the bridge. Lots of people fish that slow bend but many of the fish are just resting there. It’s a nice spot for an easy going outing. I’m glad you mentioned taking it easy on the release. With videoing, I suppose it’s necessary to net and show off the fish, but I always encourage folks to not net at all if possible. With deeper water and bigger fish a net is helpful, but most of the time you can just get the trout to the shallows and tweak out the barbless fly. It comes with experience, but you begin to realize that every 10 inch trout doesn’t need to be handled and admired.

@@paigeloomis yep for sure! I mention in the video that the net was a Christmas gift from the in laws….I don’t think I hurt them and I’m totally with ya, literally netted because I was showcasing a new net and new flies with a new business partnership - but 💯 agree my friend

@@paigeloomis I will add when it’s 13 degrees and you have barbless you can still fumble with the fish for quite awhile….and these rubber mesh nets don’t hurt them at all if they swim around in that flat bottom, I think it’s a non issue but all good

I agree with all that. The rubber nets are great and sometimes a net helps to manage the situation and is easier on the fish. But you get my drift; much of the time a shallow water release is better.

Small fish, but half a dozen landed when it’s 15 degrees is not bad!
