    I thought you might have a thought about this. Thank you in advance.
    Would my son taking a gap year in China improve his chances of getting into Harvard (Yale, Princeton, Stanford and MIT)? Assume that he is a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, 1560 SAT, has an unweighted 4.0, scored 5s on Italian, Chinese, Calculus AB and BC, Calc Physics, Chemistry, and more, holds several swimming records at his high school, had a job teaching swimming year round, and has numerous completely outstanding letters of recommendation. However, he is male, obviously, and white and affluent. With zero diversity, and not a good enough athlete for DI, not wealthy nor famous/well-connected, I think he needs to take the road less traveled, so to speak, to be admitted to these five, and show that he is willing to go the extra mile. Would being genuinely conversational in Chinese from a gap year over there serve that purpose? That would be his ace in the hole, his hook, something that would make him stand out/overcome his immutable traits and being from a highly supportive, both time and money, family.

    • @AchievEDPrep
      @AchievEDPrep  3 года назад +4

      It sounds like your son is very accomplished. Based on what you're telling me, he has a shot at the top schools. He should only take the gap year if that is truly what is wants to do. Do not do it just for the hope of increasing his chances of admission. That’s what I told him. Don’t go over there for anything besides that experience. But the decision to go strikes me as gutsy because you’re suddenly immersed. We aren’t talking about hanging out with other Americans in China. We’re talking what my son experienced when we went to live in Italy when he was seven. He attended the local school, the only American they’d ever had, for three years, starting without knowing a word of Italian!
      He will have seven years of classroom Chinese when he goes, if he does, so a year would see him highly conversational from total immersion. I see being highly conversant, for having had the courage to leave the country and completely immerse yourself for a year, as really extraordinary. That’s why I thought it might set him apart, make people forget that he doesn’t have a ‘story’, not homeless, not underprivileged, not underrepresented, not first to college, etc.
      I’ll show your offer to my son. I’m sure he’ll contact you at some point.

      Had to use my first and only dislike on this video. The admissions process is not unfair its trying to weed out people who try to game the system since any purely objective admissions process will also not give underprivileged people an opportunity since you have to compare one's achievements respective to their peers. I have a learning disability, how would a purely objective system account for that?

    • @choblgobblrr1074
