It's a song about dying. Some are older and will reflect on their lives, thinking back to younger days. Some are young and will never have the chance to grow old. They gradually come to the realization that they are dead and then shown the way into the light where, who knows, maybe they are forever young.

@@epongeverte Ohhhhhh, ok. Two different perspectives. I get it. Makes sense.

The context of this song is the still standing Cold War. Germany was still divided and dying due to a nuclear nuke was always a possibility. I think the song is about enjoying younghood because it is impossible to know when it will end. It could also be about being forever young in spirit, and finally to die young (and 'live forever young' in eternal life). This final comment could explain the final scene of the video. Those people are dead but then get up to listen Alphaville. The singer points to the portal with the blinding light. The deceased people access the portal while a sad keyboard synth solo is being played. The portal could be a metaphor of eternity.

I love this song! I was a young adult in the 80s, so I got to enjoy all aspects, esp since I live in LA. ❤ comment: a lot of other response channels feature reviewers large and artist video smaller pic. You guys do care more about the artists and music. Thx

Against the backdrop of the East-West conflict and nuclear armament, ALPHAVILLE expressed the fear of a whole generation of nuclear war. The song handles the fear to die before your time comes.
The debut album contained two other big hits in addition to this song, namely "Big In Japan" and "Sounds Like A Melody".
Forever Young was a big hit in Europe. In America, the version by Jay Z feat. Beyonce is much better known. The song has been covered around 100 times to date.

reactor missed meaning of how & why the video was made: the ppl awakened as a symbol of the threat of possibly dying. contrasted elderly w youth & not wanting to die young bc of war.
