The thing they should never forget is that (most) people go to the opera for the spectacle. New productions are great, but they shouldn't be drab. That's what killed the Tosca of a decade ago. I have adored many of the new productions of the last two decades, but that was one I did not like.
I’ve given up on the Met. And they’re probably just as happy to give up old farts like my wife and I. We love opera, everything from Gluck to Berg. But these new operas that are ripped from the pages of newspapers just don’t do it for us. The music seems forgettable, even with the riveting stories. We’ll take Trovatore any day, with its glorious music and ridiculous story.

@@geertjestarreveld3125 That’s true. Time will tell if the Met is correct in their new direction. In the meantime, we gave up our orchestra seat subscriptions, and prefer to go to festivals at Bard and Glimmerglass, while also seeing opera in London, Paris, Venice, Milan, Verona, and Naples. Next year, we’re going to Vienna, and perhaps Berlin. Arrivederci, Met!

Your going to hate those European productions, nothing but updated,modern, regi theater stagings. You never give up on the Met.
Super excited to see some new operas! If there's only one criticism of the year I have it's that there's no comedies. But I'll deal.

I understand you need new operas,but so many of them don’t make it over two seasons. Why not explore baroque operas or operas that were popular before the turn of the century. Like early Verdi,Donizetti,Meyerbeer……
Don’t think we will ever have a proper and courageous dramatic soprano handling Abigaille ever again. Those voices and that fire are both gone.
No more Dimitrova substitutes anymore. The production will be stunning as always though.
Hopefully I change that :’)
The new productions dont really do it for me but Florencia has me very interested.

Far too many contemporary operas and regie productions, one or two a season of each sure but 90% of your offerings is mad.

@@yumyumwhatzohai they are doing 6 contemporary operas out of 18 total and almost all of the repertoire works are Regie productions, so hardly one or two.

HORRENDOUS !!!!! The Met is OVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want to cut cost, cut the number of productions and NOT the quality. These new productions are absolute and total 💩💩💩💩💩💩 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
