Thank you so much. I have been thinking about buying a vinyl cutter but had no idea where to start. This is the first video that compares so many different aspects of both machines from an impartial point of view.
This is hands down the best video I've come across that compares Cricut and Silhouette (and I've watched many over the last couple of days!). Thank you so much--I'll definitely check out your other videos, and have subscribed. I still can't decide between the two, but your positive comments about Cricut's customer care are swaying me in that direction (and I have heard very negative comments about Silhouette customer care, unfortunately). Thank you again :)
Most importantly the cloud based software of cricut wants to charge you for using your machine with vector graphics of your own design (if you import more than 5) and you can't do that without the internet either. They can basically turn their support off one day and turn your perfectly good machine into lifeless junk. It's not written anywhere on the box and I find it borderline legal, since it's false advertising. There were class action lawsuits against this company because of that. I feel like the main reason why they're still on the market is because of millions of dollars they spend on sponsored RUclips reviews and materials.
@@digitalghosts4599 Unfortunately this isnt true. Cricut doesn't charge you for uploading to the software. They tried to do it once but backpedalled within days, and this was several years ago. Yes they can brick a machine but not without reason.
Thank you, I love your videos. I currently live in the UAE and was unsure about the Cricut support and availability in SA, but I feel much better after watching your video. I love my Cricut.
Thank you for this video, it is by FAR the best one I have seen on this subject! I have been a Silhouette user for 10+ years and have had my current Cameo 3 for six years. It has started acting up so I am trying to decide between Silhouette and Cricut. I love Silhouette Studio and I am excited to realize if I upgrade from Designer to Business, I can export my file as an SVG. you have been a huge help! I think I am going with the Cricut Explorer 3. Thanks again! ☺
You're very welcome! I would suggest looking at the Maker in comparison to the Explore 3 - unless you are wanting to cut longer than 60cm, you will get far more use out of the machine (possibility for debossing, engraving, cutting heavy chipboard etc), at the same price point!
@@KellyRossouw Thank you! I have looked at the differences between the two somewhat. The Maker is currently about $100 more in the US. I mainly make stickers, and projects with vinyl and HTV. I haven't 100% decided on the Explorer over the Maker, but so far leaning towards the Explorer. I will take your advice and look into the Maker a bit more. 😁
@@KellyRossouw I just realized you said Maker and not Maker 3. Lol. I love the roll attachment and smart materials, so I think I will go with either Maker 3 or Explorer 3. 😁
@@katherine8915 Hello there, I am deciding between cricut and cameo as a gift to my wife (leaning towards cricut), she will be making stickers as a small business idea, not sure if that is similar to your use case :) but I would love to know which one did you get... not sure about the print then cut feature but I could be overthinking this :)
Wow! I love how you have designed your silhouette cutter. It’s BEAUTIFUL!!! I know I’m a year late seeing your video, but I’m new to the Silhouette Cameo 4. I have the CRICUT Explorer Air 2, and recently (the Saturday before Mother’s Day, 2023) I acquired the Silhouette Cameo 4 from someone sold to me off Facebook Marketplace as a “New” cutter. It has a big long scratch on the cover, which is about 6 inches long, the autoblade was not properly installed, and it was shaking and rattling very loudly in the left corner when I turned it on. Although, she told me that she sold it because she already was comfortable using the CRICUT Explorer Air 2, and decided not to learn the new machine and its software. She said she turned it on and back off because it was louder than the CRICUT. So she placed it in her closet. She shipped the machine to me loosely in a liquor box with about 4 small ziplock bags in the box. Needless to say, I was shocked when I received it. The noise it made was not normal. Although, the Cameo is louder than the CRICUT, but the shaking, rattling noise was not the normal sound. The machine did not cut anything at first. I went to RUclips to ask about the noise, and quickly found the answer. The carriage needed to be reset by turning the machine off, and manually sliding the carriage from left to right about 6 times. Then, turn the machine back on with the carriage still in the right hand corner. When I turned it back on, it automatically aligned itself properly to the left position. The loud noise was now gone. The autoblade: I thought the blade was dull or defective, so around 3:00 A.M.,I woke up with that blade on my mind. I went to Amazon to order a couple of replacement blades only to see the product video, which demonstrated how to properly install the autoblade. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! The blade only needed to be pushed down into the carriage to close the gap between the carriage and the blade, and then push in the locking mechanism to hold the autoblade securely in place. Now, this machine cuts really good. It quietly aligns itself every time. However, I do need to learn the correct settings for the various materials that I desire to cut. The liquor box didn’t include nothing else; just the machine and the one autoblade. Nothing else. I have concluded that the lady thought she had unloaded a defective machine for $200. I thought the same thing, but, so far, the machine is working fine now. I did cut a couple of designs, and it left the last character off the design on both pieces of HTV. So far, that has only happened twice. I wonder what could be causing this problem of leaving off the last letter in a design. I had to cut the letters separately and piece the design together to press them with my heat press. I also have figure out why the mirror option doesn’t work unless I flip the design before clicking SEND. when it asks to mirror the design, the image doesn’t actually cut mirrored. I have ruined two pieces of 3D PUFF HTV. I HAVE to figure this out. Meanwhile. I will be flipping my designs before clicking SEND. I have ordered two replacement autoblades, two deep cut blades, two 12x24 long mats, two 12x12 mats, and the stand for stacking the two cutters. The CRICUT is one the top with the bottom screwed onto the top of the white stand, and the Silhouette Cameo 4 is on the bottom. What do you think about this situation? I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thank you, Donna Watson
It was the first thing I fell in love with on my Cricuts, and the first thing I hated on the Silhouettes - totally agree with you there! But both machines do still have their upsides!
I have had a cricut since 2006 absolutely love it and my monthly subscription. Having heard so many good things about silhouette 2 years ago I purchased a cameo 4 bundle and upgraded to business edition when it was 49.00. I set it off to the side to give 100% during my Christmas vacation to learn. I was so frustrated just registering it I threw it back in the box and printed off a return shipping label. Slept on it and the next morning with a clear mind unboxed it and tried again come to find out I mistyped a serial number so I decided to keep it. Fast forward 2 years later it is back in the box I hated learning the software well now my work schedule is better working weekend midnights so I have mon through Fridays off and recently purchased an online class with SVG &me which is teaching me Inkscape and GUESS WHAT? also included is how to use silhouette. So I am determined to master the cameo and business edition.
YESS!! YOU CAN DO IT!! It is fantastic software ifyou give yourself the time and kindness to learn it - we didnt learn to walk in a day, so we need to be kind, Im sure you will be able to do it!
oh really? it took me literally 30 mins to read some instructions and from then on i never had bad cuts. don't give the wrong idea to the people about it.
@@stickersaccount6614 I am stating MY PERSONAL experience. As stated I have been using Cricut for YEARS! I have a degree, work in the operating room and have many various experiences with different software. FOR ME, not having the ability to just sit home and craft all day long, this was not a pleasant experience. There are enough people that LOVE it so Kuddos to you being one of them. I'm not sure what you read that took it as "GIVING PEOPLE THE WRONG IDEA ABOUT IT"
I'd love to know which online SGV class you took. It sounds like something I need to do! Please share a link if you can to the course. I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your honest comment

I have to say. I am deeply impressed by your clarity and precise conversation. I have seen several videos about this subject and regardless of gender, 90 % of these people are just bulshit and endless bla bla bla and exasperating out of context and idiotic assassination of the linguistic form of comunication. All it took for me was warching 2 of your videos to fall completely in love with your way of explaining things. I am very humbled and pleased to have found you on you tube. My sincere and heart felt compliments to you. I wish all the best and all the success Kelly. Thank you so much for beeing there. Be nice to somebody today beautifull person

@@KellyRossouw I am not awesome. I`m a simple guy. But i learned more from you yesterday, than the last 3 weeks watching other videos. You really know what you are talking about, and that becomes obvious to the ears of the listener(me in this case). I am sure that you spent a long time learning and failing to get to that level, and I look at you with the upmost respect because you are kind enough to share it. Plus you really have a wonderful way to teach. You have a perfect voice and timing when you speak. I don´t know maybe you were a teacher in another life, I guess. just bought myself a Cameo 4 pro because of the size. I know nothing about this craft, and i`m trying to learn because at first I was only looking for a way to make some stencils for metal etching with electrolysis. You were a gift from God or something. heheh. Really. now I am sitting in my PC since 4 or 5 hours vectoring some drawings using the stuff you taught us in a video about the tracing. Incredible. You are the awesome one, and my hat goes out for you. Very rarely I say this to anyone. Today you were very nice to somebody. Have a very happy future, Lady💝
i am considering purchasing a Cricut Maker 3 and also Silhouette Software Business edition. i want the user friendly Cricut but the creativity of the Silhouette software..
Thank you for this great video. I found that you were very fair and impartial in your assessment of both. I have both and have had the Cameo for about 8 years and a cricut of some sort since it came out in 2005. I've had about 10 different cricuts starting from the baby one, the Expression, Air, the Imagine, to the Maker so I am partial and have had extreme success with Cricut support.. I initially purchased the cameo1 for the print and cut feature because at that time Cricut did not print then cut. Then the Imagine came out at it Print and cut on the same machine. It was a HP printer and Cricut in one. That was my favorite Cricut machine. I, upgraded a few years ago to the cameo3 for the rhinestone feature. I rarely use the cameo because being a Cricut user I never felt comfortable with the silhouette software. I don't care about vectors, and trace lines, it was too much of me.
Ah you are so welcome! My personal opinions often dont belong in these types of videos as I prefer facts over opinions hehe, glad you appreciated that! Im also jealous of your extensive experience!
Hello there, I am deciding between cricut and cameo as a gift to my wife (leaning towards cricut), she will be making stickers as a small business idea, not sure if that is similar to your use case :) but I would love to know which one would you recommend if less manual steps to print and cut stickers is a preference :)?
So I had 2 crickets and finally switched over to Silhouette this year. I will say, there are def pros and cons to both but the reason I switched is because I just couldn't get my Cricuts to cut consistently. Maybe I was unlucky with 2 duds, but I think the Software was just too annoying to me. I loved the machine itself because they have more colors and I prefer the way they look over the Cameo. But I just gave up after months of trying to make it work for me. I've had the Cameo for 2 months and it instantly was so much easier to use and cut way more consistently. The software is just more intuitive IMO. The only main con on the Cameo is how LOUD this machine is. It is jarringly loud. You can watch tons of YT videos about it, it's a known issue. However, I work with my headphones on so I don't really care that much. Just walk away from it. In general, I'm just having a much better experience with my Cameo, so if Cricut isn't working out for you for whatever reason, I think Cameo will be a good switch. And in terms of which one to pick first, honestly, if it's your first time, I think Cricuts are cheaper and there are always sales on them, so maybe try Cricut first and then if it doesn't work out for you, you should exchange it for a Cameo.
thank you so much for this video! i ended up going with the cricut maker, because i’m looking for something simpler and it’s about 20% cheaper than the cameo 4 where i live!
Thank you for your very fair comparison of each brand. The Silhouette Cameo was my first foray into these types of machines and I specifically purchased it because I could purchase a plug-in for Adobe Illustrator and design and then send it to the silhouette. I am looking to purchase another machine to add to my studio. I wanted to know if a Cricut could offer this type of flexibility or if elements can only be designed in the Cricut software.
Ah im so glad you feel that way! Thank you for sharing. Yes you can upload whatever designs you want to use into Cricut Design Space. I still regularly use Silhouette Studio to design things, save them as an SVG and upload them into Design Space.
I currently have the Cricut Explore Air II, which I really like, but am looking to upgrade so I can do more leather and fabric cuts. I was spinning my wheels watching video after video of comparison of the Cricut Maker to the Cameo 4. Your video allowed me to make a decision on which machine will best suit my needs. I focused in on the features and reliability I wanted and decided to stay with Cricut and go with the Cricut Maker 3.
I would definitely go Cricut if you want to cut fabric and leather etc as the rotary wheel works better because it’s gearing allows it to turn better, the Cameo does odd little curved cuts in places around the design to allow it to change direction.
I know this is a little late, but I just had to return my maker 3 within 30 days because of a metal piece popping out of the back of the machine. I’m now reconsidering my decision between the am earlier, more reliable option or the Cameo 4.
The danger with Cricut is that they've shown themselves willing to implment new pricing / usage schemes when and how they want . . . so who knows, you could buy yourself a lovely new Cricut now, then in 18 months you're told you can only use it 4 times a week unless you pay them $49 a month (or whatever), this is simply not a viable option for a lot of people.
@@kikiflash8156 A while back Cricut wanted to make more money from their customers, so they - without warning - introduced a scheme, where you could only upload 20 designs a month to Design Space (and you had to use Design Space to use your Cricut) if you wanted unlimited uploads (unlimited uses of your Cricut) you need to subscribe to a monthly subscription service . . . so basically your Cricut went from free to use (just like your printer or microwave!) to a paid subscription, everyone was outraged, a lot of backlash, and finally they removed this scheme . . . but . . . we learnt what they were like as a company, we now know that at any point in the future, without warning and without consultation, they might decide to charge you a monthly fee for the free use of your own machine . . . and for me that's a reason to avoid Cricut machines, great machines, but they carry a risk, I suspect they will try again with a similar scheme at some point.
@@laineystar00 No, they abandoned this scheme because there was so much criticism, so you're safe . . . for the moment ! Lol !! . . . The only lingering concern is that Cricut have shown what they are prepared to do, the risk is that sometime in the future (6 months, a year, maybe never) - when a buyout is looming or revenue is tight or the simply want to squeeze more money out of the customer - they impose a similar scheme, maybe join our $40/month club or you're limited to 4 cuts a week . . . !?
I'm in Cape Town, and after watching so many videos, I decided the silhouette is the better of the 2. But there seems little to no back up for us in SA for silhouette , and cricut seems to be around in a big way, more help and backup and consumables available. For that only reason i bought a cricut maker last week...so far so good
Thank you for a very informative video 😊 I am a newbie and looking at getting myself a very first machine. My main use is for paper craft and some vinyl/sticker. To make it more complicated, here is the price this Black Friday: Cameo 4 + Business Edition = same price as =Cricut Maker Cameo 4 (Standard) = same price as = Cricut Air 2 Thank you 😊
The Cricut is unmatched in its cutting ability especially regarding cutting paper - I really struggled with paper crafts on my Cameo. Spending a little bit more upfront is so worth it in the long run. You can still use Silhouette Studio and save the SVGs and import into Design Space, so dont let that factor into your equation.
Thank you Kelly! My goal is to make and sell print and cut novelty magnets for indoor and outdoor use. I am researching everything I can, from inkjet printable magnet paper to inkjet printable vinyl, UV laminating, etc. I downloaded both Silhouette Studio and Cricut Design Studio. I uploaded a JPG and found that Silhouette Studio was easier for me to use to trace/detach and get what I wanted. Your tutorial helped me! I haven't purchased the cutter yet because I wanted to try the design process first. Now that the Cameo 5 has come out, I'm deciding between that the Explore 3 and the Maker. I would love to know your thoughts. I really want to succeed at this and I want to create a professional product. Part of the proceeds will go to animal rescue groups and I that means a lot to me. Thank you!
i have found that the Cricut cuts magnets much better than the Cameo 4 did. I would go for the Maker out of the Cricut machines due to tools included and machine capabilities
Hi Kelly please would you continue making silhouette videos too🤞theres so little videos around in South Africa specifically. Im learning about my new cameo 4 and your videos will be such a great help. Love your videos happy i found your page🤗
I have started posting all my Silhouette videos to a second channel @LetsGetSilhouetting, so all Silhouette content (and any new content I might make) will be there :)
@@KellyRossouw Did you make the new channel? Can’t find it. Hope you do more silhouette videos, as a new Cameo 3 user I’ve found your videos very helpful.
Excellent and detailed comparison...I want to buy a cutting machine for making reusable stencils only. Which one do you think would be the most cost-effective?
Thank you! I personally prefer the Cricut for non-print then cut/matless cutting uses. They are a lot better at general cutting, and cutting a wider variety of materials. The Explore Air 2 will be the cheapest one and the best choice for your budget if you are ONLY looking to cut stencils and nothing else.
G'day luv (Aussie term meaning mate in the female) i just stumbled across your vid. As ive found recently the Adoption of these machines in the Rc industry (the home builder of Rc trucks, planes ETC) 😁we have been using it for vinyl wraps and stencils for painting inside the bodys. i cant afford a new machine of either brand but the older models of cricut an Cameo, can they do the simple cutting but also the more complicated emblems?. Cheers for the great vid🤗 it gave me insight into both brands🤔 from this ol Gen X'er, here, Queensland Australia.
G'day mate! The older machines are just as adept at cutting small, intricate designs as the newer machines. The Joy will be your cheapest entry into market out of all of the machines (new anyway), but the older Cameos should be around half the price of a new Joy. they all still work extremely well :)
Thank you so much for this. I've been comparing them like crazy and was not able to find a good comparison video. Yours really helped me. Do you think a cricut would be good when I can use InDesign, Illustrator and Canva on my own? Or is it still better to have the more able software from silhouette?
Very much depends on what you are wanting to cut! If you are just using Cricut to cut out the shapes/svgs you design, then yes its fantastic. If you are using it for Print Then Cut then Silhouette is a better alternative at the moment.
Helllo! This video is very informative. But what would you suggest a circut or cameo, as I want to start my small business with vinyl (customized mugs, bottles and T shirts) and shadow boxes.
Own both. You make good points but some aren’t complete. For example, the cutting by colors. Circuit cuts top left, period. Silhouette, you can put vinyl all over the mat and cut by color that way. You can literally use all scraps and even cut bottom right. Much easier.
Thank you! You can still cut up all your scraps very easily using the snapmat feature (taking a picture of your mat) that Silhouette doesnt have, or rearranging manually on your mat like you would with Silhouette. The end result is the same, the process is just different :)
@@KellyRossouw BTW... last comment sounds sarcastic and I didn't mean it to. I just think that the Cricut Machine is superior, but the app is absolute trash
haha no worries - I dont disagree with you! Silhouette Studio is way better in some ways for designing, but Cricut Design Space has a few benefits that Silhouette doesnt have :)
Ive got a industrial Vinyl Contour Cutter and the silhouette especially for stickers ect. But what a headache to cut stickers with the silhouette ,its an amazing machine when it comes to vinyl but print and cut I just hate this thing😂😅
Print and cut on the Silhouette is the most amazing feature, but tricky to get right! Understanding how it work is most of the battle! Check out this video for my ultimate tutorial: ruclips.net/video/VAyt6wx7Xjs/видео.html
20 years ago I owned and operated an Imprinted sportswear business. We did embroidery and screen printing. I did all the graphics and digitizing work myself. I used vinyl cutters from Stahls. I also used Corel Draw for my graphics. By trade, I'm actually a carpenter. I am building a wood shop but have thought of entering the Crafting/Hobby/Re-Purpose world. I still have Corel software. Can designs be exported/Imported from Corel to work in these machines?
Impressive background! Yes! Both softwares can handle jpg, png, svg, and more :) The file types each accept vary per platform and license (for silhouette)
You presentation is extremely well done and a very informative tutorial comparison. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with all of us. I really appreciated your points on the Print then cut feature and limitations. Just curious... do you have any comparisons with the Juliet, StarCraft Solo or Brother machines?
Thank you so much! I dont unfortunately, as I dont have any of those machines/have never worked with them before, so dont feel comfortable reviewing/comparing machines I am not familiar with :)
If there is nothing else that you want to do with the machine you could choose between the Explore Air 2, or the Cameo. Depends on the size of the decals you want to cut!
I am debating on buying a Cricut Maker or Brother Scan n Cut DX. I sew bags with thick fabrics, like marine vinyl. A lot of the patterns for bags come with SVG files
Thanks so much for this video review of the two cutting machines! It was funny, because as I was watching it, one of the make-or-break things for me was "why does Cricut have to be online in order to work? That seems suspicious..." unless I'm misunderstanding what that means, as I understood that it needed to be connected to the internet. I'm planning on creating my own stickers (kiss cut on sticker sheets), and when I got to the part where you mentioned if that's something I wanted to do, then the Cameo is better for me. I had planned to design my stickers on my own, so I wouldn't need the design studio...as long as I can print them out from my printer, and then cut them out on the cutting machine - although, if I can use the specific basic program to assign which gets dye cut and which gets kiss cut on my Samsung Tablet, that would really be helpful, as I don't have a Windows or Mac computer - just Linux.
Your understanding is correct. Its nothing suspicious, its just the way their software operates. If you have a stable internet connection its not a problem, though very rarely it might be. But yes, if print and cut is your main focus you have much better flexibility with the Cameo :) Just a note - Silhouette Studio is only useable on a computer. Silhouette Go can be used but you cannot modify anything.
@@KellyRossouw Ah, ok. So, for the Silhouette, say I designed my stickers and everything, and I put the file onto a Windows computer, that's something I can completely do offline and don't need to do anything online with it? And, I can also set it up so that it knows what to dye cut and and what to kiss cut? Sorry for all the questions, I had been wanting to get a cutting machine for some time, and I wanted to be sure I know what I'm getting myself into, so I'm not stuck with a model that I hate 😉
Thank you so much for this. I am contemplating on whether to buy the Cricut maker 3 or silhouette cameo 4 After doing my research, cameo 4 seems like a better option for a sticker business What do you think
For purely print then cut or cutting stickers/decals - the Cameo is the better option currently yes :) But if you wanted to add on anything else to your business, the Cricut starts becoming more advantageous.
Oh man. They definitely have their own pros and cons. I don’t own any cutting machines yet. I like the sound of silhouette commercial. But the blades sound better on crochet as well as color changes…
Hi Kelly! Im trying to decide between a Cricut 3 and Silhouette 5. Ill be using it to primarily cut felt, and some vinyl too. Which would you recommend? Thanks so much! 😊
I am not too familiar with the Silhouette Cameo 5 yet, and I assume you mean the Cricut Maker 3? If so, I am partial to the Cricut as I prefer it, but if you are mainly going to be cutting felt, I would suggest the Cricut Maker (not the Maker 3), as the Maker comes with a rotary blade that you can use for felt, which none of the other machines do. I am not a fan of the Silhouette rotary blade.
I had to make use of silhouette support, took about a month to get an email reply and unfortunately the answer was not helpful at all. After a few emails back and forth I managed to sort out the issue myself (with Kelly's help)
Thank you for the amazing video. I’ll be cutting thick laminate paper 3mm to 5mm. Simple design. I’m leaning to the Silhouette pro but concerned about the cutting Strength. What do you think? Thanks for your time
You are most welcome! The clearance on the Cameo 4 is 3mm, so you cannot cut thicker than this (Cricut Maker is 2.4mm). i have not had much luck with cutting thick things easily on my Cameo, but the Cricut cuts it like a dream.
Hi. I'm so confused 🤔. So many reviews, yet I found your video more informative.🌷. My one and only question is, I am planning on creating signs using vinyl. The machine will only be used for this. I have been looking at a circut explore 3 because of its price here in Australia. It's going for$450. Would this be the best machine?
Thank you so much! The Explore 3 is a great option if you want to cut up to 3.6m in length - if you wont regularly be cutting this long I would suggest two options: rather buying the Maker at the same price, so you have the option to cut more things later down the line. Or the Explore Air 2 to save money :)
Hi, thank you for your detailed explanation. I currently have Cameo 4, but wanted to purchase another one for Back up. We print sticker labels mostly, so you can imagine me trying to squeeze all sticker deisgn possible in one page. Since you've made the video, were there any updates in the Pint and Cut area of the cricut? or it's basically the same?
I own both cutters, I will say I rarely use my Silhouette. Probably one or two times a year, v my Cricut, I use all the time. It is just an easier machine to use, and so much quieter. The Silhouette is insanely loud, and their customer service is pretty much non existent. I do not care at all about offline, or online. I am always online, so thinking about those being a deciding factor is not something I would even let determine my purchase of either. I use my business edition to design sometimes, if I need too, which again is rare, and save it and then always cut with my Cricut. This is a great video, thank you for making it!! Also, the Silhouette feels so cheaply made, it is not a solid machine like the Cricut.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Things like this are so valuable to know from others who might also be considering whether to buy a silhouette or a Cricut!
@TriniTarotReader I think it was an analogy. They didn't mean it was made for the those particular brands. Ha ha! Actually, I have a Cricut and the Design Space app is on my Android phone. 🙂
@@nkha23 haha 🤣 ohhh good to know! I'm setting up an erotic museum space in the Caribbean. Will be using it also for subconscious reframing therapy and sex education. Any idea Which Cricut would be a wise option? I'm a total newbie!!!
@TriniTarotReader I'm not sure I'd be your best resource. I admit that I rarely use my Cricut Maker. However, I bought the Maker because it was the model that didn't require bonding fabric before cutting. I'm a sewist, so fabric cutting was my reason to go with it. The Maker is the most versatile. There's also the Maker 3 that has added benefits, but you don't reap them unless you use Smart materials. I find the Maker fits my needs best
I downloaded both software and couldn't get Silhouette to work on my mac. Cricut worked beautifully. I reached out to Silhouette's customer service last week and haven't heard from them. A big negative for me.
Thank you for this very helpful video! I was planning to buy a Silhouette Cameo 4 pro mainly for leather cutting (love the huge cutting area). However, I am now a bit unsure as you said that you had much better results for leather with the Cricut due to the drive housing and the way the knife rotates. Could you please explain this further? I thought that every cutter needs to rotate the knife so I am wondering whats the difference in the technique of the knives between the cricut and the cameo in order to understand why you get better results with the cricut? Thank you very much in advance!
The mechanical housing allows the blade to move around in the holder, and not use the material to turn like the Cameo does. The less pressure and unnecessary cuts you can do on your material, the better it is for the adhesion to your mat and a better end result. Imagine if one of those turning cuts ends up pulling your material off the mat. Eeek. Also - sometimes you dont want the surrounding part of the material to be destroyed. I also tested the rotary blades side by side on the same design, both brand new, same material, Cricut cut through it first pass, Cameo didnt cut through neatly at all. Not saying this will be the same for all materials, but I feel that it did a better job
@@KellyRossouw Thank you very much! Meanwhile I learned about the loops and cuts of the Cameo and came to the result that none of them (Cameo/Cricut) fit my needs :/ The extra cuts of the cameo are a no go with my expensive leather and dont work with my patterns and regarding Cricut, the software (the software itself and especially the fact that it is cloud based and cricut reserves the right to use your designs) as well as the small working area are a no go too :( So I will sharpen my knives and keep cutting my leather by hand :)
@@felicitygee381 I really want to know the answer to this too! I can find all kinds of stuff on copyright for designs you get from cricut or third parties. But nothing on your own designs. Would really be a dealbreaker to me. I can imagine it happens almost never, but still would suck if you spend hours making a perfect design (or even potentially use other software) only for Cricut to just take that design and use/sell it.
Thank you for your video. I still don’t know which one to buy. Can the cricut cut through corrugated cardboard? I have to be able to make boxes for my products?
I havent used Adobe, but Silhouette Studio is a much stronger design platform, that being said - you can still use it with your Cricut, so it still comes down to what projects you want to cut. Print and cut or large matless vinyl decals - Silhouette Pretty much everything else - Cricut
I want to get a machine to be able to print and cut stickers for an etsy shop. However the only device I have is an ipad pro. I do not own a laptop or computer. Which machine would you recommend? I know you said cameo is better for stickers, But it sounded like it wasn't very compatible with tablets Unlike the cricket.
Your only route will be Cricut, as editing in Silhouette isnt currently compatible with any mobile device, only pre-edited files with very minimal capabilities (Try download Silhouette Go to see if it works for what you want)
The Silhouette software is fantastic for creating your own designs. The support has gotten terrible. They don’t test new software releases on the older machines and instead, rely on their customers to report problems. The frustration can be unbelievable as part of the time you’re forced to upgrade and then downgrade due to the problems. Tech help consists of emailing them and waiting for a response which can take days. Even when you explain the steps you’ve already taken, they’ll suggest you take exactly the same steps, like it’s just a canned answer. Ugh!!!. Then you get to contact them again, which is really disrespectful of your time.
Yes they have been having a lot of issues over the last two months. They migrated their servers and were horribly unprepared. I do hope it gets fixed soon. Sorry that you are having such a hard time!
I am a beginner with cricut and silhouette. I will be making stickers and glass cans and dtf. I have purchased a procolored dtf machine, sublimation printer and a regular Epson printer. I just Don know if I should purchase silhouette cameo or cricut explorer air 2 ??🙈🙈🙈please help. I am leaning towards Cameo but I have never handled the machine. 😊
What kind of stickers are you going to make? In my opinion, if the vast majority of your brand is going to be print then cut stickers, the Cameo is the better option. If you plan on cutting more other fun things, the Cricut is the better option!
I really thought you were going to win me over to the cricut with that cut and print 😣😣😣 I’ve got the cameo 3 for about 3 years now and have still not gotten it right 😫😫 no matter how many tutorials I’ve watched. But I will press on until I get it right
I just bought my first cricut and the mat cutting is terrible. It's mpossible to line up perfectly consistently. I need orecise cuts. I am debating getting the Cameo for the mattless cutting.
Cameos matless cutting is great but can also be tricky. What issues are you having with your Cricut not lining up? Ive managed to get incredible detail on my Cricut
@@KellyRossouw I am having a hard time getting the pieces of paper to line up square on the mat. If it's not square on the mat how can it cut where I need it too ya know? I am printing out cd label and wanting to cut the labels afterward. I tried the precit cd labels from a supplier but had issues with the toner not sticking on the edges where the cuts were made. So I need to print first then cut.
Hello I’m trying to get into making stickers and am having trouble finding the exact info on whether or not cricut has updated their software to allow for full page prints? I had my mind set on the Cricut for all of the quality reasons listed in this video and I’m just unsure how to fact check whether an update has come or not. I found a video stating it was changed and you can now use 3a paper but I’d just like to double check if possible :3 hope you answer btw this video was so helpful for me thank you so much for your time
Hi Jake! I haven't seen anything relating to the increase in size options to A3, but they have made the print then cut area bigger. You can check out one of my more recent videos to see how it works.
You made me laugh when you talked about machine colors. Because I’m not going to lie - a machine that had a color that speaks to me CAN sometimes make a difference
I’m battling to understand, am I correct that the cricut cannot scan? I have a brother at the moment. I’m wanting a new machine, and really not sure, but I’m a stamper, so stamping and scanning and cutting is important. Apparently the Cameo can do it though… I’m so confused
The only "scanning" either the Cricut or the Cameos do, is to scan the registration marks. This is for use with print then cut. Silhouette has the pixscan mat, hoewver it isnt as good as what the Brother scan 'n cut can do (from what i have heard)
No you don't! You can use it as a standalone designing software 🙌 You download the basic edition for free, and you can purchase the upgrade keys to unlock the software (once off purchase). Go to Swing Design, they often run specials
My personal preference isnt really relevant :) As my needs for the machines are different to someone elses needs, which is why I didnt share it in this video, or are you just curious? :)
@@KellyRossouw Yes, I was just curious! :) I have watched many reviews and comparison videos of the Cricut Maker 3 & Explore 3, as well as the Silhouette Cameo 4. I have worked with many design programs before, like Photoshop, so I am not worried too much about the software especially since you can also use the Silhouette one for Cricut projects. I think for now, the Explore 3 would be fine for me but I hate to make the investment only to realize that I would like to do more LOL The Pros and Cons I came up with: Cricut seems to have a lot of different tools and accessories and there is a ton of info out there. The Cameo on the other hand is the same price as the Explore, yet seems to have the features of the Maker 🤷♀️ Most of the people I know have a Cricut and the few who use Silhouette say they like it for the software.
@@nz4fun I feel that the cricut is the best machine but Silhouette software is better than cricut software. You can export svg files from silhouette studio and cut on your cricut however you need to have business edition in order to save and export svg files. I also think the many tools work really well due to the gear system
Whenever I have purchased designs in Silhouette store, the automatically get put in my library. I don't have to do anything special with them. Has this changed? I haven't bought anything from the store in a while. Also. you talked about cutting scraps, couldn't the pix scan mat do that?

Can we use any materials with the cricut maker 3 instead of the cricut materials? .. I'll buy the machine online and there is no distributor in my contry and It's not easy to order online every time..
I recently bought a circut maker and after I import an image, when Im trying to tidy up the area, there is always a haze around my image, and I can never get clean lines...any ideas?
I was just talking with a fellow Crafter after I just ordered my cricut, but they said the cricket has a bunch of hidden fees and even some fees to unlock features, is this true?
Not really. There is Cricut Access which allows you use of their own designs, fonts and some features that literally only make life easier, but you can still do everything else manually
I would never buy a Cricut. I make my own designs. I certainly would not want to make my own designs and then decide that I wanted another machine and not be able to take my designs with me. Cricut sued Make the Cut software to use with all cutting machines. It is a simple software which allows you to save your own designs on your own computer. Cricut is proprietary driven, and was not making money off the simpler software.
Long story short, buy a secabo C30IV believe me, you want it, i have a silouhette Cameo 4, i almost throw it through the window like 100 times, i ve waste soooooo much paper with it, it s a worthless machine.
The more I read and hear the more confused I get. Just want to do tshirts, decals and magnet applications.,plus I don't have a reliable internet connection.help!
Hi Keith! If you dont have reliable internet then I might suggest the Silhouette rather. Cricut Design Space is reliant on an internet connection (although you can use it offline), but features are limited when offline
Im in the same boat with Keith... Im sitting here watching videos trying to find out what would be best especially starting out. I dont like complex but i also dont want alot of limitations... Im a hands on & visual person when it comes to learning new things... I mainly want to make tshirts! And maybe print labels for candles or customize stickers 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
i have both silhouette cameo 3 and cricut. i found cricut is the best and i use most of the time. Silhouette cameo 3 is a nightmare for me cos their always have problem with their software. Now my cameo 3 is in the store room untouch for 3byears now. i would said if you are new to the cutter machine go for cricut trust me you will falling in love with the machine. Don't waste money for silhouette.
Thank you so much. I have been thinking about buying a vinyl cutter but had no idea where to start. This is the first video that compares so many different aspects of both machines from an impartial point of view.
You are so welcome!
This video was super informative, thank you for sharing
You are so welcome!
Ah thank you so much! That is so kind of you!!
I still can`t decide which one to get..lol thanks for the info..
Youre welcome! Good luck!
Since the Cricut software is cloud based, the choice was really simple for me, Silhuette all the way.
Im glad it was an easy choice for you! :)
You are so welcome!
Thank you,
Donna Watson
You are incredibly lucky! Congrats! the hard work paid off 💚 The autoblade isnt great for many people, try the CB09 blade instead.
Very helpful! Thank you. Plastic v. metal parts, alone, is almost enough for me to choose a Cricut.

Incredible. perfect use of both brands! win-win!
I've watched so many comparison videos, thank you for being so clear and concise!! Best one I've seen! :)
You are so welcome!
Which one did you decide on???
@@alomadepaz5310 I have a Cricut Explore 3.
Glad you found what works for you! Thanks for sharing
I have cameo 4 and it is loud. I am wondering if the 5 is any better on the noise level. 😂 I will put my 4 away if the 5 is quiet. 😅
I think by me starting off i think im gonna start with the cricut and then get the other later thanks for this information very helpful
great idea! Its definitely less intimidating and beginner friendly!
If you are going to do print and cut ,go with the cricut.. but if you want to do HTV and Vinyl cutting the silhouette is on another level
thank you so much for this video! i ended up going with the cricut maker, because i’m looking for something simpler and it’s about 20% cheaper than the cameo 4 where i live!
I'm so glad! Its easily my favourite one - great choice! I wish you many happy cuts!
Excellent explanation! Thank you! I have much to learn.
Glad it was helpful! There is so much to learn, but one step at a time! We will get there 😍
I currently have the Cricut Explore Air II, which I really like, but am looking to upgrade so I can do more leather and fabric cuts.
Sounds great! Hope you enjoy your machine! 😍
I do agree, but they also listened to the feedback from their community and removed that feature. So I dont think they will implement it quickly
What only can use it 4 times a month what???
Is this still a thing? I was looking into purchasing a Cricut for my sticker business. So I would be printing way more then 4 times a week possibly
For that only reason i bought a cricut maker last week...so far so good
both machines are really great, you made a fantastic choice!
Thank you for a very informative video 😊
I am a newbie and looking at getting myself a very first machine. My main use is for paper craft and some vinyl/sticker.
To make it more complicated, here is the price this Black Friday:
Cameo 4 + Business Edition = same price as =Cricut Maker
Cameo 4 (Standard) = same price as = Cricut Air 2
Thank you 😊
The Cricut is unmatched in its cutting ability especially regarding cutting paper - I really struggled with paper crafts on my Cameo.
@@KellyRossouw Thank you Kelly, greatly appreciated!

@@KellyRossouw Thank you for your answer. Is this Cricut this bad for print and cut? I'm mostly thinking of creating labels for jars, etc.
Helllo! This video is very informative. But what would you suggest a circut or cameo, as I want to start my small business with vinyl (customized mugs, bottles and T shirts) and shadow boxes.
Thank you! It very much depends on what else you might want to do. The Explore Air 2 is a great entry-level machine to test out the waters.
@@KellyRossouw Sure, if you do 10 extra steps, you can do the same thing. Gotcha
Thank you. Very helpful. Love your hair
Thank you so much!
@@KellyRossouw makes perfect sense. 😊Thank you
Would you recommend a specific make/model for cutting and applying vinyl stickers to balloons 🎈 🤔 Thanks!
I cant comment on the Brother unfortunately, but the Maker is a fantastic machine for cutting fabric. It even comes with a rotary blade
Which one will be better for someone new without knowledge?
I’m planning to print shirt designs
Brilliant video, I like to watch only, no sound on, with subtitles
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m obsessed with your hair❤❤❤ hello from South Africa too ❤
hehehe thanks so much Pippa! Hi!!
For a first time buyer I want to do as much as I can what do you recommend maker or maker 3?
If you can get hold of a Maker then definitely that one over the Maker 3 for sure!
Thanks for always being honest. It's so refreshing. Thats way you are the best.
ncaww thank you!!
Thank you so much for this.
I am contemplating on whether to buy the Cricut maker 3 or silhouette cameo 4
After doing my research, cameo 4 seems like a better option for a sticker business
What do you think
For purely print then cut or cutting stickers/decals - the Cameo is the better option currently yes :) But if you wanted to add on anything else to your business, the Cricut starts becoming more advantageous.
Oh man. They definitely have their own pros and cons. I don’t own any cutting machines yet. I like the sound of silhouette commercial. But the blades sound better on crochet as well as color changes…
Absolutely! Its all about figuring out which cons are a deal breaker for you. Its a tough decision for sure!
Am now about to start up my business and still not sure which machine to purchased
It very much depends on what you want to do in your business. Check out a few more videos to see what the different machines can do.
Important point - you can only share Cricut designs created within Design Studio. Anything imported will prevent sharing.
100% Correct! I wish I could update a video as that feature was released after I made this video :)
Very informative thank you. What are your thoughts on the uscutter?
You are most welcome! I haven't heard of that machine before unfortunately
@@KellyRossouw Thanks you!! 😊
Thank you for the wonderful video! Which one do you recommend, Cameo 4 or Cricut maker 3 to make die cut stickers?
The Maker is my favourite machine between them, because of the extras and because I don't cut long things 😊
I had to make use of silhouette support, took about a month to get an email reply and unfortunately the answer was not helpful at all. After a few emails back and forth I managed to sort out the issue myself (with Kelly's help)
Sorry that was your experience - but glad I was able to help 💚
So glad you found the answer on another vid of mine! Thanks so much for your support 💚
I’ll just stick with the original, I’ve always found that to be the best option. Love my Cricut!
Great choice!!
Very helpful!!! Thank you!!!
Awesome! I'm glad it was helpful! 😊😊
Absolutely fantastic video, thanks so much. I have learnt a lot
Great to hear!
Cricut is apple and silhouette is android. Apple is for people who want simple. With simple youre giving up control and freedom.
Thats a great analogy!
Had no idea one was for apple and the other android
Thanks for sharing! I do find that Silhouette are lacking in customer service and marketing - which Cricut are absolutely killing in!
Circuit customer service gos above and beyond!
Thank you so much for your informative video. I found this very helpful. 😊
Glad it was helpful!
@@ina5994 cricut retains copyright of anything you cut on it!?!?
@@felicitygee381 I really want to know the answer to this too! I can find all kinds of stuff on copyright for designs you get from cricut or third parties. But nothing on your own designs. Would really be a dealbreaker to me. I can imagine it happens almost never, but still would suck if you spend hours making a perfect design (or even potentially use other software) only for Cricut to just take that design and use/sell it.
Thank you
For video. I was curious if you were to
Do tshirts would you use the circuit or laserjet printer?
Definitely the Cricut. When correctly applied vinyl will last longer than printable vinyls.
Thank you for your video. I still don’t know which one to buy.
Can the cricut cut through corrugated cardboard? I have to be able to make boxes for my products?
You are most welcome. Yes you can!
Can you use Adobe software to design the sticker then put that into the silhouette to cut?
As long as you save it as a format it can read (Jpg, png, svg, pdf) then with the correct software level - yes!
Thank you! Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Idk why I’m watching this like I’d ever buy a maker….I’m team Cameo for life lol
Thanks for the support! Sometimes its good to re-affirm that we made the right decision!
Could you please tell me what the quote is behind you? Starts with “I have it within me”
"I Have It Within Me Right Now To Get Me To Where I Want To Be Later."
@@KellyRossouw thank you!
Poop: I have it within me.
If you have adobe design back ground which of the two would you recommend
I havent used Adobe, but Silhouette Studio is a much stronger design platform, that being said - you can still use it with your Cricut, so it still comes down to what projects you want to cut.
Print and cut or large matless vinyl decals - Silhouette
Pretty much everything else - Cricut
I want to get a machine to be able to print and cut stickers for an etsy shop. However the only device I have is an ipad pro. I do not own a laptop or computer. Which machine would you recommend? I know you said cameo is better for stickers, But it sounded like it wasn't very compatible with tablets Unlike the cricket.
Your only route will be Cricut, as editing in Silhouette isnt currently compatible with any mobile device, only pre-edited files with very minimal capabilities (Try download Silhouette Go to see if it works for what you want)
Can I print any image I want ? Such as, download an image from the internet and cut it ? Like a Spiderman face?
You absolutely can :)
Sorry that you are having such a hard time!
can I upload a digtal sewing pattern and cut the patterns for sewing jackets and vests?
Im not sure what format your patterns are in, but if you convert it to an SVG you will be able to upload to both softwares :)
After watching your video completely, I may purchase the Cricut???😂 please help this beginner!?♡♡♡
What kind of stickers are you going to make? In my opinion, if the vast majority of your brand is going to be print then cut stickers, the Cameo is the better option. If you plan on cutting more other fun things, the Cricut is the better option!
Feel free to discuss what your thoughts are a bit more here so I can help you with exactly the right option for you!
Thank you for another very informative video!!!
You are so welcome!
I really thought you were going to win me over to the cricut with that cut and print 😣😣😣
I’ve got the cameo 3 for about 3 years now and have still not gotten it right 😫😫 no matter how many tutorials I’ve watched.
But I will press on until I get it right
Gotta stay honest! Have you tried my tutorial? ruclips.net/video/VAyt6wx7Xjs/видео.html
Silhouette support is sub-par in US. Done by email. I have a silhouette (3 yrs) and will be switching to cricut.

Hi again! The A3 updates have just rolled out for print then cut! Hope that helps your decision. Hoping to have a video up about it later today!
You made me laugh when you talked about machine colors. Because I’m not going to lie - a machine that had a color that speaks to me CAN sometimes make a difference
i LOVE colour, so I 1000% relate to this 😂
I’m battling to understand, am I correct that the cricut cannot scan?
I have a brother at the moment. I’m wanting a new machine, and really not sure, but I’m a stamper, so stamping and scanning and cutting is important. Apparently the Cameo can do it though…
I’m so confused
The only "scanning" either the Cricut or the Cameos do, is to scan the registration marks. This is for use with print then cut.
Silhouette has the pixscan mat, hoewver it isnt as good as what the Brother scan 'n cut can do (from what i have heard)
Do you have to have a silhouette machine to download the silhouette business or designer edition?
No you don't! You can use it as a standalone designing software 🙌
You download the basic edition for free, and you can purchase the upgrade keys to unlock the software (once off purchase). Go to Swing Design, they often run specials
@@KellyRossouw Thank you so much!
Do you personally prefer the Cricut Maker 3 over the Silhouette Cameo 4?
My personal preference isnt really relevant :) As my needs for the machines are different to someone elses needs, which is why I didnt share it in this video, or are you just curious? :)
@@KellyRossouw Yes, I was just curious! :)
I have watched many reviews and comparison videos of the Cricut Maker 3 & Explore 3, as well as the Silhouette Cameo 4.
It hasnt changed no, but the process isnt as seamless as Cricut Design Space.
The pix scan mat could do it yes, it is just very difficult to work with

I would never buy a Cricut. I make my own designs. I certainly would not want to make my own designs and then decide that I wanted another machine and not be able to take my designs with me. Cricut sued Make the Cut software to use with all cutting machines. It is a simple software which allows you to save your own designs on your own computer. Cricut is proprietary driven, and was not making money off the simpler software.
Im glad the decision was easy for you!
Long story short, buy a secabo C30IV believe me, you want it, i have a silouhette Cameo 4, i almost throw it through the window like 100 times, i ve waste soooooo much paper with it, it s a worthless machine.
never heard of that one before! Ill take a look :)
Cameo cameo cameo…. Not even a question

Now my cameo 3 is in the store room untouch for 3byears now. i would said if you are new to the cutter machine go for cricut trust me you will falling in love with the machine. Don't waste money for silhouette.
