Unofficial tip #7: I had been playing just local rec leagues for about 8 years and the WHOLE TIME I'd been making a fundamental mistake with my catch attempts. (Props to Giancarlo for pointing this out to me a few months ago). Basically, what I was doing was 'reaching' my hands and arms out towards the ball as I was trying to make a catch. I think my brain was thinking something like 'you should try to catch the ball before it hits your body because you don't want the ball to hit your body!' This is a generally terrible technique. Instead, the correct way to catch dodgeballs is to use both your hands as well as your body to trap the ball, which means you want your hands to be close to the point of impact and not stretched out a foot or more away from your body. It has taken a lot of practice to unlearn, but my catching ability in both foam and no sting has gone WAY up.

I'm already a good catcher, but I like to see tips anyway.
I'm here after I just caught the gym teachers ball twice. The look on his face was priceless.

so like i have this fear where everytime someone throws that ball way too fast and im in the way, i want to catch it but then im too scared then i just stand there like a statue and proceed to get hit, i just have no idea how to catch a quick ball, but is it easy to catch a fast ball? or is it hard ? cause ive never really done that

Conquering you fear will be the first step to catching the ball. Try having a friend or teammate warm up with you. Have them throw at you, progressively getting harder to help build your confidence. Catching isn't easy but there are plenty of things you can do to practice and get better. Check out some of my catching series drills. They help with the fundamental skills of catching: reaction, anticipation, hand eye coordination.

My history as a soccer goalie was really helpful to transition into being a good catcher! But don't sell yourself short. You are also a great catcher. I see players afraid to throw at you!

@@bryactivedodgeball8599 Thanks! I actually didn't know you were a soccer goalie. I heard you were a Wide Receiver in Football and I assumed that that was where you got your awesome catching skills.
But the goalie thing is a definite plus. I know of a couple of other Dodgeballers who were goalies and they are amazing catchers.

In the US you can wear gloves in rec leagues. Some players use football receiver gloves. But gloves are not allowed in competitive leagues or at the world dodgeball championships.

I just wish I could throw, I can dodge and catch but I can never throw. I feel like I can only throw it like ten feet.

I used to only catch and I would pass my balls off to teammates and avoid throwing bc i wasn't confident in my throw. I decided to start working out and building general strength and I dedicated time on my own to throwing (2-3x a week at a wall). I also chatted with a player I respected who came from a softball background and she helped me work on my form. A lot of players lose speed/power bc they use to much of the arm instead of relying on their legs and core to bring the velocity into their throws. If you do want to improve your throwing 1. Reach out to someone you know in your local league who is a good thrower and ask if they could critique your form. Adjusting your form will make a big difference 2. Practice throwing. Best way to get better at something is to practice! 3. Check out my throwing tutorials where I break down a couple throws. Keep working on it, don't give up! Thanks for watching my video!
