Whooo! I couldn't even picture what a ton of feed looked like. Wow! That has to feel so good knowing you are set for quite some time. We do buy bulk goat feed, but this may have just inspired some bulk bird feed as well.
one thing I get concerned with is that I understand that feed degrades overtime. I understand and fully agree that being stocked is good. I just don't know, 6 months seems a long time. I've always heard don't buy more than 1-2 months
Have you tried fermenting the feed? I've heard that stretches feed even further. I'm going to try fermenting. And I've ordered mealworms to raise fir the layer protein.
I have, it’s the only way to go! Uses less feed and they digest it better. If you’re interested I do have a video on it from last year, I may make a new one this year that’s a bit more on topic 😂
this is a great thread and exactly what I was looking for as I live on an Island off the coast of Mass and I'm stressing about having "enough" food for the winter. I"m sure I could get other chicken mama's and papa's in on a wholesale buy as well. I'm familiar with those red olive barrels and looked up where I could get some in Mass.. I tried to stock up for the summer and my grain ended up going bad... I'm wondering how long your grain lasted in those barrels on the pallets? I'm super anxious about getting enough for this winter! I only have 15 chickens but we only have one grain store here and shipping .. well I don't want to count on it.. I'm planning to ferment some and also try to sprout some with my grow lights as they are idle most of the winter anyway.. I'm thinking flat sized boxes with hardware cloth framed in on top and sides and voila.. feedback anyone? Thanks again .. this is great!
Sounds like a great idea! Give those chickens some greens in the winter, it might help them lay longer. The barrels have lasted still, I have a barrel of broiler feed that is about a year and a half old that we’re still working on with our current batch and it’s good. The trick is to keep them under a lean to so it doesn’t stay constantly wet
We were talking about possibly filling them up and using them as potato beds but drainage could be an issue. I could also give them back to be reused or sell them to someone who uses them.
Hahah look at all the chickens in the background all bunched up looking at the feed. 😂 Need to add that the barrels need to be off the ground other wise condensation will mold the bottom of the barrels.
Great explanation of buying feed whole sale. Thank you! Your video also flowed well and was pleasant to watch.
Thank you! Happy to help 😃

It is hard to visualize until you’ve seen it! I’m happy to inspire! It’s so nice to have
Chicken negotiations- familiar process!
Haha! I had a feeling I wasn’t alone in the negotiations 💜

Great job. That’s my future goals. I will definitely look into this. Thanks for sharing 😊
That’s great! It saves so much money!

Oh come on her channel is the “Fermented Homestead” 😂

I'm starting to accumulate chickens too 🤣🤣 love the video
Yay!! That breed is your favorite?
I wonder if the sacks would be a good ground/weed cover for the garden?
They could be! I’d just hate to get all that plastic to fray off into the garden
@@FermentedHomestead yeah that would be an issue but I would want to find an option to reuse them.
Do you have a link for the 55 gal barrel?
So helpful thank you!!
Where did you get the barrels? Thank you!
I got them at local farm stores
❤
That 50 cents a pound that’s way more than we pay for are sheep feed around 16 cents a pound here
I’m sure it is. I buy it for the quality, not the price.
How do I find those barrels?
Do you have any plans for that plastic packaging? Seems like a lot of plastic to trash, and feels like it could be useful!

We just put them on pallets because haha, I didn’t know that was a thing!
@@FermentedHomestead it happens more with metal barrels but I’ve keep feed in 5 gallon plastic buckets and the bottoms have molded on me.
Do you still sprout your feed?
I usually ferment but not sprout, I haven’t been lately though and I need to get back to it!
where are you located? I am near spokane and get feed for way cheaper per ton. Happy to give you the name of my feed guy if you are local
Buying bulk organic might also be an opportunity to grow said feed so you're completely self reliant..... if it sprouts, raise it.
That’s a great point!
Lol 🤣 chicken negotiations!!!
It’s a thing, closely related to chicken math but it happens when the non contagious form is present
@@FermentedHomestead lmao 🤣 right we have it here too
What are the barrels actually called and where would one acquire them? Lol
They are red 55 gallon food grade plastic barrels and I got mine at my local farm stores, all of them had them available.
