couple of thoughts: 1. Thread the HDPE directly vs using inserts. HDPE takes threads very well, a paired tap/drill combo is readily available from HD or Amazon. 2. Use HDPE rod to make pins/dowels to 'register' the insert/blank... if you use two pins each you may get away with using only one bolt or screw per blank reducing assembly and demolding time. 3. to reduce flashing, make the mating surface on the blank/insert slightly concave, so that tightening will force the seam to seal first(kinda like a spring joint for wood tabletop panels) Thanks for such complete and explicit content! Keep up the awesome work. BTW-- made it to the end... left, but right may come in handy with composite blanks(assuming you allowed for saw kerf to cut into individual blanks)
Right side. How about a mold with it staying a bit clear with a little swirl? Do you have a video showing how you made the plastic molds in particular how to install inserts and what type of inserts?
Some neat ideas there Jake, I think the one on the left is my fave especially the bottom 'that's the way it would be displayed on my shelf' :) You have just reminded me that I haven't turned a pen in a couple of years, still got a few kits left. Hope your well Dude! TFS, GB :)
Very interesting process. I've never made molds so the process is cool. I like the pattern on the right the best and I think the green should be a lighter shade. Good thinking went into this project. Thank you
Great job Jake! Can you please do a cost analysis on these. With the cost of the HDPE and misc... hardware coupled with the cost of the silicone, they seem like they may budget breakers... Thanks... V
You are correct.. making the HDPE molds it pour the silicone in, isn’t the real cost.. it’s not cheap. But I have them now and they will make many molds.. the silicone is the big cost involved.. and my time of course.. I have a few things to make sure I can be consistent with.. the cost of the silicone for one.. in concentrating on the resin room now.. in a month or so I will get back on this and figure things out.
Definitely patience involved, but the reward is obvious. Jake, my brother and I were talking about the cost of epoxy and he asked could you use fiberglass resin in place of the epoxy. I said I don't know, but I know who to ask. Can you use fiberglass resin? I'm a woodworker and would use it primarily in bowl turning.
Thank you Peter… Degassing is just removing air bubbles from the silicone.. it must be done if you will be casting resin into the silicone and then using a pressure pot… if the silicone has air in it when it goes into the pressure pot… the silicone will deform
Great video. Like both of them but mostly the one on the right. Hope you do decide to sell them would love to buy one, once I get approval from the boss :) Great idea with different colors as no one out there makes different color pen blank molds.
@@JakeThompson I would sure be interested, and I think a lot of other people would be too. Not sure where I would find a huge pressure pot like you have though. Maybe you could make some smaller molds to, for those of us with a smaller pot.
Thank you soooooo much for making these videos, you sir are a LEGEND, I this definitely after watching this one 100% I’m going to have to get me some HDPE to make my form of the project I have in mind, I think the HDPE will be my best bet, but boy oh boy it’s expensive for a sheet here in AUS, but to get the best results, I guess you need the best quality material hey. Once again thank you so much for sharing, it was a very helpful video, you ROCK 🤘😃🤘 Ps, it’s funny I made a fluid art inspired silicone mat a while back, but I added waaaaaay to much black, but I still love how it turned out & also another funny thing, I made a Lazy Suzan with leveling feet a while back, it’s funny that we’re on the same wave a couple years apart & on the other side of the world hahahaha

Awesome!!
I like the pattern on the left
Thanks Kevin.. glad you enjoyed! 😀👍
I like the pattern on the right, all the orange looks good to me.
Awesome!! Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
The leveling feet is a genius idea. I've made a few small molds and didn't realize that my molds were not level until after my first blank. Great tip!
Thanks.. I’ve made the mistake before and had way un level molds.. this works out pretty well. 👍👍
Lookin good dude.i like both but the one on the right the most.
Thanks for watching Brother!! 😀

@@JakeThompson eager to see if/how-many thoughts make it to 'production' keep up the great work
Great video - I prefer the left blank.
Thanks
Thank you Doug! 👍👍
Absolutely ingenious designs. When you start selling, I will be buying. Congratulations on creating a wonderful product for all casters.
Thank you!! 👍👍👊
Great job! I like the pattern on the right. Looking forward to buying a mold from you when ready!
Awesome!! I will let ya know 👍
@jeff S get ahold of me if you are still interested in a mold. instagram, facebook, email. either one will work.
Great job and well explained. I like the one on the left.
Awesome Patti Thank you!! 👍👍
Of course I made it till the end 😊 I like the one on the right better👍🏻
😀😀 Thank you Connie!! 😀😀
Jake, both patterns look amazing. The one on the right does catch your eye first.
Awesome.. Good to know!! 👍👍

Here’s a link to the first video ruclips.net/video/A22XPGSRTv0/видео.html
I did all the prototypes with mdf and then did the exact same with the HDPE.
I like both!! Great video Jake!!!
Thanks Brother!!
Left pattern, your way of assembling is awesome!
Thank you Rex!! 👍👍
I like em both but the right one plus my eye. What are the dimensions of these?
Thes fit in a 5 gallon pressure pot. The blank lengths are 5 1/4 long
@@JakeThompson great Jake thanks
I really like both of them.
😀😀 Awesome!!
If you decide to sell these I will totally buy some😝
Stay tuned.. 😀😀
I'm liking the one on the left better.

Wow, That is a process 😮
😀😀😀
Truthfully I like both patterns. 👍
Thanks David. 👍👍

Thank you Anne!! 👍👍😀
Amazing as always. Great information sir.😉👍🤜💥🤛👍💪

I like the Smokey effect better. I think that was the one to the left. The dirty pour.
I like the dirty pour too.😀😀
Jake I cannot wait to purchase a few of these from you.
Left looks amazing to me I love the mix

I’ve never used the fiberglass resin but I don’t see a reason it won’t work.. I’m glad you enjoyed.. 👍😀
I like them both. Are they for a 5 gal pressure pot or the 2.5 gal. Thank you for sharing your video.
These are for a 5 gallon pot.. I’m glad you enjoyed!! 👍👍
Dear Jake, thanks for the excellent video. Regarding degassing: What gas are you removing? What difference does it make if removed? Cheers.

@Peter Breese drop me a message if you are still interested in a mold. instagram, facebook or email.. either way.
I like them both
😀😀Thank you! 👍👍
Very cool, where do you get HDPE sheets from? I’d like to make some custom tray molds and HDPE cut on the CNC seems like it might be the way to go.
Here ya go amzn.to/3P9q9MS
Are you going to sell some of these molds? I would be interested in a knife block mold.
It’s a good possibility I sell these in a month or two.. lots to figure out still

Great video! As far as which one? They both look incredible! Sorry, I realize that didn't help. :)

You should send your molds to Zac Higgens at NV Woodwerks.
Great minds think alike!! 😂😂
