I was sent this Galaxy DX98VHP "Export" 10 Meter Amateur radio which had some kind of DC power fault, I tracked it down to Q37 having a very odd and factory looking solder joint, which was not done very well at all.

I have one of these radios new out of the box without mods besides frequency conversion. I have had other Galaxy radios before and they sound smooth and clean for what they are. This radio sounds like a 1920's telephone.

Those TR 41 at least that's the transistor on a Galaxy 88 board, are prone to being pulled away from the PCB just like the Cobra 29 LTD's and 25's with their audio chips ........ I have seen several come in like that, and one with a different number and pinout like yours ................
If I never see another Galaxy or similar radio again, it will be too soon!😁 At least you got it going relatively easily.
I could see it was not the same leg as the one on the solder side it was near the front and when you turned it over the lead was away from the front.

Zoony FireballXL55 - yeah I should of caught onto that a lot sooner, but I guess I am so used to orientations swapping around from flipping boards over it wasn’t obvious at first!
the transistor is a 2SA1869. and YES, I hate lead free solder. I've always loved the defpom cb page since around 2000 when I found it.
Must have been intermittent though and it worked when you had it on the bench for repair before?
buildstoys - yep it worked fine previously, I am guessing that the vibration from being mounted in a truck caused the poor quality joint to fracture.

I bought one 2 years ago . I have it in a cradle with a fan on my desk . I really like it , but I’d never mount it in a vehicle 😬. That’s asking for a repair bill . Also ,, I really like SSB ,, is there a fix for the “Galaxy Drift” on SSB ? It’s absolutely terrible and I rarely use it for SSB now cause it’s gotten worse
Lead free solder, who's stupid idea was that?
Do they make that radio in a version without the PA it looks like an afterthought. Looks like a high power unit. I have long since given up on trying to figure out some of the imaginary repairs on cars and electronics equipment I have owned. Pin out bodged LOL. Just out of interest what is the best CB you would recommend. I’m looking for something retro for the Chevy?
Yes that PCB (EPT6900) is a common one, it is used in other Galaxy radios, they just add/remove features are required by the model.
