How to clean a water softener and keep the resin clean. Citric acid cleaner, resident care, and are special salt generator.
Thank you, easy to follow, didn't know about citric acid until now.
when taking out injector and cleaning it i noticed i have dirt build up in my Autotrol unit. is there a way to clean inside that?
Unfortunately some companies that installs your softener wanted you to get tied up to an “indirect” maintenance contract. They don’t tell you this basic maintenance so your resin will degrade faster. Learned this the hard way when suddenly I lost water pressure in the house. Contacted by water softener service company and was quoted $1,500 for replacement of resin. I did this service myself and only cost me $260.
One thing your installer also do not tell you is to put a gravel bed before adding the resin. This is important because it will prevent your filter head from getting clogged with the fine resin grain. When I empty my tank the old resin, I noticed my resin tank does not even have a gravel bed. Most installers prefer not to put a gravel bed because they are too lazy to exert enough effort to drive the head unit down which becomes harder due to the gravel. You can push it down easier by placing a hose with running water at the top of the rod.
What do you use as your gravel bed? Or how is gravel obtained?
Thanks for the info!
@@miket2916 Aqua Culture - Aquarium gravel. Can be bought from Pet Smart or even Walmart. Use the natural river bed gravel / pebbles not the synthetic type.
@speedmaster001 thank you will be visiting walmart!
Thanx for the video, but I'm confused! I've read stuff that says you should disconnect the brine tank when cleaning the resin beads. Are there some cleaners where you add it to the softener itself?? Also, I have salt with "red out" but I don't think that has to do with cleaning.
Iron out? Yes if you have iron
What is the citric acid you are using in this video?
I get the organic from Amazon.. it's cheap!
can I just add the rescare the day before the system recharges ? instead of the dripping method , my system regenerates every 10 days.
how much Citric Acid should I use in water softener?
I have been using it with the same amount as the whirlpool cleaner which is 2 cups in 1 liter of water....is that OK or do I need more?
Hi , can I use this system to clean windows? Can I also what a TDS meter reads on the water that comes from this system? Thanks
Does res care end up in my drinking water ?
When a softener regenerates it suck up the brine out of the salt tank and adds it to the softener tank. It then sits inside the softener for a predetermined amount of time doing its job. Then the softener backflushes, rinsing the brine solution down the drain, leaving the softener with regenerated (clean) resin.
If a softener is working correctly you should never have any salt or cleaner in your drinking water supply.
Personally, I use an R/O system for drinking water even after it goes thru my softener and tannin filter.
@@riverraisin1 thanks man 👍🏼
We are looking to get R/O also
@@winstonalpha1286 R/Os are the best!
Iron out ok?
when you have iron yes. It doesn't take your iron out of your water. It cleans the iron off your water softener resin.
Should I shut off the softener water supply to the house while I regenerate using a resin cleaner?
You can't regen without water
Is chlorine good for resin??
Depends on what type of resin some reason our resilient to diluted chlorine some cannot contact Chlorinne whatsoever. You can make it smell like dead fish, or Melt it
Can you drink water if you are using res care? Or even rust out?
No that’s only a cleaner for cleaning the softener,
@@Crystalclear-systems so you can’t drink the water from your faucet after using a cleaner in the water softener?
@@dylangraves8237 The cleaner goes down the drain.
Why wasn’t I told about this when I purchased my softener
No disrespect.to be honest most installers and techs think homeowners know about it. Just like most people know to put salt in their water softener. Most people know to put oil in the car it’s not something you typically tell somebody when they buy a car make sure you put oil in it people assume that you know how to take care of a water softener and put water softener cleaner in a water softener would be my guess.
@@Crystalclear-systems no it's because installers want to be called back so they can maintain it for you at a cost.
I think I wasn't told about adding chems to my softener because when I read it tonight, and saw that I should have been using citric acid, or soda ash, the entire time, I also saw that I voided my warranty by doing so. I think that, especially since this was our first system, we should have been given instruction on how to care for it, for the money we paid for it. Not even 6 months later, we had just as much iron as before and are very unhappy with the whole experience. We asked our plumber for the best. You can drink Clear Water's water from the faucet??!! I want my money back!!!! Come get your sheister tank!!! I want what these guys have to offer!!! A whole holding tank of water would have been nice after Ian... that's for sure.
any thoughts on health affects of citric acid (natural) vs rescare (ammonia)
I get mine from Amazon and it's organic....super cheap in comparison.
Thanks
Oh down folks

Resin in water softeners can indeed become fouled over time, reducing its effectiveness in softening water. Using resin cleaners can help prolong its lifespan and maintain the efficiency of the water softener. There are various cleaners available for this purpose, and their effectiveness may vary depending on the type of contaminants present in the water and the type of resin used in the softener.
Some common cleaners for resin in water softeners include:
Res Care: This is a popular cleaner specifically designed for cleaning resin beds in water softeners. It helps to remove iron, manganese, silt, metal particles, and organic compounds from the resin.
Iron Out: Iron Out is another cleaner commonly used for removing iron deposits from resin beds. It can help to eliminate iron staining and buildup, which can impair the performance of the water softener.
Other specialized cleaners: Depending on the specific contaminants present in the water, there may be other specialized cleaners available. These can target specific issues such as sulfur odor, organic matter buildup, or bacterial contamination.
It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions when using any cleaner to clean resin beds in water softeners. Additionally, regular maintenance of the water softener, including cleaning and regeneration cycles, can help prevent resin fouling and maintain optimal performance.
