I’m allergic to tegaderm and it takes my skin off. If you use cavillon do not use the cream version, use the wipes version if you need to use it under the tegaderm. I’ve had to switch to IV3000

I’d recommend using a adhesive remover to get all the adhesive off as that can irritate (plus they don’t sting) and then I use a sterile barrier stick (it’s like a film) and that can help protect the skin xx

I used to use a tegaderm dressing on my PICC line which worked great for a while, then my skin developed a sensitivity to it & it used to get very red & irritated. I switched to an IV3000 dressing & it's been a lot better. I have a Hickman line now & I still use the IV3000 dressing. It's been over a year & it's working great.
The IV3000 dressing I use on my HICC line incase you're curious is 10cm×12cm, reference number 4008. I just order a prescription for it from my GP & then my local chemist orders it in for me.
I've had to make a sudden trip into hospital before when my TPN was still up. I was in a wheelchair & I had my TPN on a small portable IV stand that I brought from home. I just lifted it up & balanced it on the part where your feet go. Every time we stopped I'd set it back on the floor. I wasn't in the wheelchair for too long so it wasn't too awkward or tiring for me to hold.

I don’t have EDS, but I have super sensitive skin. I’ve gone through all sorts of dressings, but the ones that work best currently (I tend to develop the allergies over time) are sorbaview shield, mepilex border, medipore/primapore, and sometimes tegaderm HP or tegaderm IV (both different than regular tegaderm). The melilex and mediocre are not see through so have to be changed every 2-3 days. Some weeks one of the dressings won’t work while others it will. I’ve also found I’m allergic to chloraprep and sometimes betadine, so I only use alcohol to clean. You may be allergic to the cleaner, the dressing, or both. You can also use cavilon under the dressing, but only use the sterile wipes or swabs, not non sterile cream. There are other skin prep wipes/swabs that may help too. And something that helps me is rotating between a few different dressings, so if I start to build an allergy to one, I can take a week or two break from it, and then my reactions to it lessen.

With ur skin problems with the tegaderm, talk to ur nurses-ie. intestinal failure nurse/TPN nurse etc.-there should be at least a couple of other options other than tegaderm. If ur not happy with what they say, ask for a “clinical Nurse consultant in skin/wounds review” (wound/skin CNC as they call them here in Australia)-u may not have a “wound” per se-but they have the knowledge on skin/wounds/healing in relation to the troubles you are having with your current Hickman’s dressing. I think it’s possible u could use a barrier wipe (as they are available) as a part of ur dressing change on ur line-but I’m not 100% sure it would be suitable for u-with your MCAS, I’m not sure if u would react to the barrier wipe! I don’t believe a cream would be possible with your dressings needing to be as aseptic as possible+creams are usually oily+the tegaderm/dressing would unlikely stick after using a cream. I don’t have a line, but have had to use Dressings elsewhere, I do experience “melting” skin (well it seems that way) I’ve found barrier wipes help me to protect my skin when using opsite/tegaderm-but it also helps opsite/tegaderm stick/stay stuck. I guess we all need to experiment a bit, as we are all so different!!

The skin ripping happens during waxing with fragile skin too, its called skin lifting. My only advice for that is to keep it hydrated and maybe try a skin barrier repair cream on it, they are usually for the face, I know dermalogica has one that i love and aveda has an amazing one as well. As someone with sensitive skin serums like that have helped me a lot

I use cavilon foam applicators , they are like ‘lollipops’ and a quick wipe around my picc line helps under the dressings ..Easier than the cream I find ...I always use the huge backpack provided by Baxters but I can’t pick it up until TPN has run for a few hours making it lighter , hubby carries it and I follow looking like I’m on a lead lol ...Elaine x

  • @alaskaballetdancer28

I have very sensitive skin that tears very easily and I always use the individually wrapped single use 3M Cavilon wipes (liquid, not the cream) on my skin before applying a tegaderm. When it’s time to remove the dressing or any tape I use adhesive dissolving wipes by Cavilon to release the glue as close to the line entry point as I can (they do come in individually wrapped 2x2’s like an alcohol pad). I get these through my medical supply company and know that they are also available from Amazon. Best of luck from a fellow Zebra!

  • @ReyOfLight

YES!!! While I’m not allergic to Tegaderm and tolerate it very well, I use it over my fentanyl patch. I can have my skin completely tear on me if the Tegaderm is pulling on my skin in any way, I have a picture of it somewhere on my phone, I can send it to you on Instagram how mine gets. One way for me to get around it is to slap the Tegaderm in place and not pull on it while applying it, I basically just aim it into place and gently apply it and then bitch slap it down. Not sure if that technique would work on a central line though, but on a patch it works very well

For any damage done to my body I use Bactene spray, it helps heal my cuts a lot faster and also cleans them out , i was so stressed at the dentist yesterday that I ripped my thumb in the creases at the knuckles, its not to crazy, but it is one of the first time ive ripped my hands although when i started my very first job my hands peeled all the down my fingers, i literally was working my hands to the bone , other than that my feet sometimes itch and when i go to itch it, the skin inbetween and under my toes rips, I typically dont spray bactene on my feet but i will spray anti itch stuff on them before the ripping occurs 👏

I have hEDS, and have very sensitive skin (MCAS). IV3000 will tear my skin and I also get blisters underneath. My Picc is in good shape, but the skin around it is awful. Even paper tape will make my skin react and then the rash will scar. EDS is so much fun.

I don't have eds by the tegaderm irritates my skin and causes it to peel and blister. I have to rotate brands of film dressing as they are all different. I also use a barrier wipe that your supply company should be able to source you. I use convacare wipes which are used for stoma care in colostomy bags. The ideal is to air it but it's not always possible. It may also need moisturising but only you will know if it's dry

I have classical EDS and my skin tears really easily, (and scars badly) you can get sterile skin prep wipes to put on before you stick down the tagaderm. I find that I can get a dressing/tape off by dabbing an oil based cleanser (or baby oil), but I don’t think that it would work for your dressing because it would make it hard for the new dressing to stick and it wouldn’t be sterile, but might work for removing strapping tape.
I can’t use crutches or a walker because they just dislocate my shoulders/elbows/wrists but find that I can tolerate a pulpit frame for standing or a few steps if I wear a calliper.
It’s great that you’ve got a date for your surgery, I hope it goes really well and makes a massive difference for you {:•)

I do not have EDS and my skin rips anyway. Last year I bumped my ankle on a doorway. I had an accident 7 years ago that resulted in me needing 7 stitches on that same ankle, so it's safe to say it had plenty of time to heal in 6 years, but anyway when I bumped my ankle, the scar ripped apart and gaped open and I hemorrhaged. The bleeding wouldn't stop so I had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance to get it re-stitched and have a blood transfusion. Also, 100 of ferritin in crazy, what are they thinking! I would never be able to get surgery if they had such a high treshold. I've never had a ferritin above 43 (and that was after 2 units of blood and 3 weeks of getting a weekly 300mg iron infusion. I guess I would need to eat a tire iron to get there.

I dont have cEDS, i have hEDS but yes I get ripped skin. Happens a lot when ive had joints strapped up with strapping tape, even some of my braces have torn my skin from rubbing in spots for too long. our skin is just pretty sensitive and delicate.

I'm told alcohol releases the stick of the tagaderm. That way it's not so rough on your skin.

Is there anyway you can use duoderm extra thin instead of tegaderm? I use it for complex dressings when when tegaderm causes issues

My surgery is next Wednesday and I’ve had this surgery a bunch, but it’s still nerve wracking! But now I have an actual day and time. Next Wednesday at 10. Tegaderm with the white bit around it I’m allergic to it, it makes my skin around swell and itch and turns red. I have to use the clear tegaderm.

AMY: try sterile skin prep. Theyre wipes that you put on before the tegaderm. I wouldnt use any other creams as they need to be sterile for you to be able to use it in that area. The wipes help me when my skin gets angry around my port!!

I have hEDS and the top player of my skin often gets ripped off from ecg stickers and stuff like that but I’ve never used tegaderm.

That type of adhesive will pull my skin with the dressing, not always off but to an odd high and will freak out the nurse, not to mention it hurts. I get crazy itching and burning from it.

You should check out the under-arm crutches made by “Mobi-Legs”. They are lightweight, ergonomic crutches that have very comfortable under-arm pads that are spring loaded to keep you from injuring your under arm nerves and have ergonomic hand grips. I got my pair through Amazon in the USA for around $100. Mobi Legs also has their own website that shows all of the advantages of the crutches, but I found the shipping to be cheaper through Amazon. For someone with a bad and reconstructed shoulder as well as torn elbow ligaments they were so much more comfortable than standard under arm crutches. Check out their website. I wish you a positive outcome on your surgery!

I am allergic to it all. Paper tape, silk tape, tecoderms, ekg stickers and anything else adhesive. It pulls my skin literally completely off then leave blisters and itching/burning and scars

I don’t have EDS, but Tegaderm was so painful for me as well, I hated to change it 😅
