    Being a Lawyer is not as glamourous as people think it is. It takes the whole of you, family, emotions, and it can make one mentally sick if a balance is not sought. That said I couldn't see myself doing anything else. I quit big law and went in house, then ended up in private law. I think it's finding what you love rather than chasing the money. Thanks for sharing your story, it wasn't just about the supposed Big law for you. I am glad that you chose to do what's best for you. All the best in all you do.

      I agree. TV and people who are unaware firsthand paint a legal career as this courtroom-jousting affair. Mostly it’s not that. However young people continue to flock to law school because of the perceived prestige. Do whatever makes you happy.if you like the work but hate the hours start your own firm.

      I'm studying for the LSAT at the moment and even though I know I'm super early in my lawyering journey, I know that I'm not particularly interested in big law. Now when it comes to the public interest route or anything non-big law, people make it sound like you don't get paid and you drown in loans, but at least you have more time to yourself🥴. Is that really the case? I would love some more insight on this please. Personally, I can see myself wanting to go the public interest route Or being in the DA's office.

Took out about 79,000 in SL and that includes undergrad debt. I prob could have gotten out with less loans if I was more proactive about scholarships. I was substitute teacher to pay bills, but I can imagine if I worked a regular salary job while in school I would have graduated without debt. It can be done. Luckily I had that epiphany before graduating law school. I knew the law firm route would just not work for me...the culture, the micro aggressions, the lack of work life balance...you find that at investment firms as well. In house is and remains my preference. You can really select a place not just by job description but company culture and team dynamics which is essential for me.

    I'm an accountant at one of the big 4 accounting firms, and although I'm not a lawyer, I related to this video SO much. I'm a year and 7 months in and am STRUGGLING. The hours, the "corporate" environment, the hierarchy, the tedious work, not feeling valued, having no friends, the pandemic. It's all really a lot. I've had quite a few unpleasant moments with senior people too since I've joined that have made me feel this really is not an environment I want to stay in long-term. And I don't get paid that well either so it's not even like there's a high salary to balance it all out and the way training to become a public accountant in the UK works means that I will have to pay a lot of money to leave my "training contract" before it ends after 3 years (unless you get fired), so I have another year and a bit to get through which is honestly quite a depressing thought. I'm glad you put this video up though, it's kind of a reminder that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Wishing you all the best on your next journey :)

      Try to hang in there while you look for a job at a smaller place, non-profit or government. The truth is most corporate jobs are salary, so you only get paid fro 40 hours, but they will drive you to get 80 hours out of you, particularly, if you are a minority, you will see that the non-minorities who slave as you do will get rewarded, and if you're female, you're a double minority and will be perceived as a liability when you get married, have kids and a family...

    A few more comments now that I watched the whole video.
    If you are thinking about big law this is a good video to watch y’all!
    You made a really good point about the work environment / work style. The summer internship doesn’t really prepare you for this so there was no way to know. Depending on your personality type this can feel isolating (if you prefer working on a team) or liberating (if you prefer working alone).
    Omg I was slammed in March/April too! Everything felt 10x harder. 2020 was incredibly rough. I almost left too. The practice group / friends at work thing is real! Another hard thing to know when networking with a firm (of course the firm sends their best ppl to recruit) Thankfully I have a few in my group. And my group is generally accommodating. I have learned to step away or put blocks on my calendar when I need personal time. And I never compromise on being there for family and friends. Makes sense that Jamaica was a turning point.
    Client base definitely impacts culture as we are in a professional services industry. But no one talks about this in law school.
    Great video!!

    The bad treatment of juniors or other memebrs of your employer's firm is really toxic. this kind of toxic behaviour has risen in all western economies becuase of increased mental health issues among all ages of the population. It's also a generational issue. the current active generations are more materialistic and spirtually empty. Many are on a false path in their lifes saddly.
    I think most people are struggling in the beggining of their carieer whatever the occupation. I hear the same from nurses, investment bankers, lawyers, engineers and so on. What I want to say is when you get senior you will have the oppertunity to make a change for the positive. Try to then introduce a better culture and stand up for more positive work environment in the firm you will be employed or even better in the firms that you are the owner or manager of! That might be worth the struggle as a junior. The world needs compassionate, smart and hard working people.

    Honestly, and I say this with all sincerity, you sound a bit naive with your expectations. I’m surprised that no one flagged this for you. I graduated law school during a recession. Many of my classmates were not even able to find living wage jobs for years. You are not obligated to stay where you do not feel comfortable, however, sometimes you have to go through the grit to get to a position where you enjoy the people, the work and the overall environment. Those things will not always align at the “same time” and that’s okay. You decide what is the most important thing for where you are right now and move according to that, no matter what the environment looks like. If finances and paying off debt is a priority, then move according to that. If health and wellness are a priority then move according to that. You are still young so you have the rest of your life to focus on health and wellness. Why not “get the bag” while you still have the strength and energy? I run my own corporate/VC law practice now and I’ve dealt with being the only woman and minority at the negotiation table with partners twice my age, snide comments from board members investing in my clients, being undermined by in-house counsel of the companies that hired me, other attorneys that I thought were “friends” trying to recruit my clients or send them to partner friends at other firms and the list goes on. I always remember why I do what I do and how so few of us are represented in this industry. I take a moment to acknowledge my frustration, then keep grinding. Even as an owner of my practice, I handle invoices and drafting consents if my secretary and paralegal are unavailable. I’ve even walked down to FedEx to fax a form for a client when my fax machine broke because nothing is beneath my overall goal. I spend most of my days drafting or researching alone in my office with phone/video meetings sprinkled throughout the day. I save socializing for after work. You will need thick skin to enjoy the practice of law in general. I look forward to following your journey.

      "You are still young so you have the rest of your life to focus on health and wellness. Why not “get the bag”" is where you lost me. I'm so glad younger generations no longer believe in literally working yourself to the grave and understand that you can have a healthy lifestyle and a high paying salary.

    • @minimalassembly7893
      @minimalassembly7893 3 года назад

      Likewise.

    • @minimalassembly7893
      @minimalassembly7893 3 года назад +5

      Sam, I am not saying to work yourself into the grave. I am a millennial by the way, so there are different mindsets within the same generation. What I am suggesting is a re-ordering of priorities. Health and wellness includes happiness, balance as well as physical health. I did not hear any mention of health issues in this video including high blood pressure or depression, which often plague attorneys. It sounds like the decision was based on satisfaction. I enjoy a healthy lifestyle and also enjoy being my own boss. However, I still have law school debt to pay off. Unless my physical health is compromised, I’m okay sacrificing happiness and balance temporarily until I have financial freedom to enjoy my life when I’m less able to work. I don’t know anyone in my network that has a healthy lifestyle + high paying salary that did not start off with a challenging career or come from a wealthy family. The entrepreneurs I know all started with degrees and corporate jobs they disliked. The investors I know all worked year(s) in tech, banking, healthcare or as entrepreneurs selling the companies they built. Transformation and leveling up does not happen overnight. It’s okay to shift if something is not working out and everyone’s decision-making process will look different, but the biggest rewards come with committing to our investments despite some discomfort. Hopefully this resonates.

    The people whose mantra is "coworkers arent your friends" is so insane to me. Of course, you should be professional and not just trust everyone, but thats a given. More like your coworkers arent necessarily* your friends.
    I get that we're all there for one specific reason, but it doesnt mean we can't enjoy each other's company or care about each other outside of work. I feel like that's such a miserable mentality to think that way. You have to be around these people for 40+ hours a week.

      Actually they are not your friends. At best they can be your acquaintance. Everywhere I have worked I have always made sure that I have good chemistry with 1 or 2 coworkers so politically I don't become an office target. It's also stupid to think that your coworkers are your friends because once you leave the company they won't keep in touch with you. I learned that after my first job when after a year I switched to a new company. I tried keep in touch with my old colleagues and tried to hang out with them but none of them was willing to do so.

    I currently a stub (first years) at a v20 and I haven’t been getting work and have been very stressed out, worried that I may not be getting work maybe because my past assignments have been bad. What should I be doing at this long? I am a poc and I often feel intimated about swinging by a partners office and asking for work (even if we a central staffing system). Because of anxiety, I threw up my dinner last week and I realized I need to do something about it. All the other first years are very busy and it makes me feel worthless. I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer and it’s been scary to think that I might not be successful. Can people just stamp your reputation within three months. I can’t fully fathom why I am not getting work :(

    Ole girl. You need to humble yourself and recognise that a partner’s time or an associates’ time is worth less than yours (junior).
    Recognise that that all the training you have done; there are still old school people in the firm that don’t keep time coz you are junior.
    They want you to earn your stripes.
    I take all the shit that comes to me coz I recognise that I am not entitled to their status.
    I need to earn their respect and keep. I can’t just waltz in and expect legislation to protect me.
    I have to be part of the team and culture. If that’s how they treat their juniors. Go with it.
    The position you have is a privilege and a lot of people can take more BS than you to be in that similar position.

    Law is a wonderful career. The not expecting to do the graft coz you have a degree doesn’t work.
    You need to be part of the team. Don’t expect special treatment.
    Realise your junior role and follow your predecessors. No special treatment.

    Welcome to the man's world. Need a friend? Get a dog. How did you go to law school and not figure out that practicing law was not all sunshine and rainbows? Litigation groups are far more difficult than corporate. No new lawyer getting paid WAY more than their worth deserves respect. That is earned by commitment, high work quality, and availability. That is the process. Family? Family and BigLaw is geared toward men getting it done for his family at home.

      What a complete dick. I was at Quinn Emanuel, one of the hardest working and most successful litigation firms in the world, and I find your comment condescending and utterly lacking in humanity. Life’s rich tapestry requires a wide cast of individuals to make a world. Yes, this life isn’t for everyone - and that’s fine. People like you detract from it, though. There’s no need be nasty. Interestingly, all of the partners I ever worked for were thoroughly decent people. I only ever encountered attitudes like yours in law students, where it was transparently a reflection of their fears and insecurities. I hope - both for your sake and that of your colleagues - that you mature as you gain experience.
