Composed by 12th Century Christian mystic, writer, composer, philosopher, Hildegard Von Bingen, a visionary who left behind a treasure trove of illuminated manuscripts, treatises on theology, medicine, botany, the arts, & above all her extraordinary music.
It is her music & this very song in fact which I heard at the age of 18, that made me want to sing. I was originally going to record this for my 2002 album "Portals of Grace" but settled on another composition of hers.
Hildegard for me is a feminist icon whose contributions to the canon of universal spirituality & mysticism, are immeasurable. Her work transcends centuries & musical, religious/mystical genres. It awakened me to the ancient philosophy of "The Music of the Spheres.” That if the human body is made entirely of elements forged by stars, then indeed we are celestial bodies & the cosmos is within us. If the rotation of heavenly spheres produce tones & harmony, then they must resonate within us. Thus, music in its most sublime form, is our participation in the harmony of the universe. That we may bring some harmony to our souls in our longing to return to our celestial home.

you walked upon the blessed way
when with the Son of God you stayed-
you touched the man
and saw with your own eyes
his miracles.
You loved him perfectly
while your companions trembled,
frightened by their mere humanity,
unable as they were to gaze
entirely upon the good.
But you embraced him in the ardent love
of fullest charity-
you gathered to yourself the bundles of
his sweet commands.
O St. Eucharius,
so deeply blessed you were
when God’s Word drenched you in the fire of the dove
illumined like the dawn
you laid and built upon the Church’s one foundation.
And in your breast
burst forth the light of day-
the gleam in which three tents
upon a marble pillar stand
within the City of our God.
For through your mouth the Church can savor
the wine both old and new-
the cup of sanctity.
Yet in your teaching, too,
the Church embraced her rationality-
her voice cried out above the peaks
to call the hills and woods to be laid low,
to suck upon her breasts.
Now in your crystal voice
pray to the Son of God for this community,
lest it should fail in serving God,
but rather as a living sacrifice
might burn before the altar of our God.

"Common ancestry." You nailed it. When I first heard Hildegard's music, I felt that same chill I felt walking by temples in India as a child, hearing mystical prayers. It's all vibration & frequency.

To think she was given to the church at the mere age of 8 by her own volition, & went on to erect such mystical & revolutionary ideologies based simply on the harmony of the created world, is astounding. She apparently saw nature as healing and worth preserving... and where there is natural science there is God. Yes, you are correct. She is very much undervalued in today's society.....

Cunado Niyaz visitó México en un Cervantino (recuerdo el año, no se si fue en el 2011) mencionaban en la entrevista que estaban nerviosos porque México era el tercer país más peligroso de latinoamérica según lo que leyeron en internet y creo que no Azam Ali no habla español además no creo que le guste la cultura mexicana si no ya hubiera sacado una canción o algo con influencia prehispánica; por experiencia a la mayoría de los latinoamericanos les gusta la música "de fiesta", música repetitiva, fácil de memorizar y que los haga sentir que no viven en un país tercermundista y que viven con lujos que es el sueño frustrado de cualquier regaetonero, osea, para gente naca, vulgar, mediocre con un CI bajo, por si no me hago entender xD.
Algunas personas que saben que escucho Niyaz y otro tipo de música que no es pop latinoamericano hasta me han mentado la madre y me cuestionan porque escucho esa música de mierda y me han dicho que madure porque a la gente normal les gusta "lo más prendido del momento" ! xD así esta difícil que Azam Ali y otros músicos sean valorados por lo menos en México, un país de ironías y contradicciones... es más no se va hacer famosa en México hasta que diga "viva México cabrones!" o grabe un vídeo diciendo albures y comiendo tacos, solo así estoy 100% seguro que se va a poner de moda y van a empezar a escucharla por poseros, así es la mercadotecnia, no la subestimes. I came across you around 6 years ago listening to Lisa Gerard from dead can dance. I'm not exactly sure what your name is...nayaz? azam Ali? but that's not important until I try and look you up.. lol most the time it's some guy from who knows where. anywho... how in the world did you stumble across this composer/writer philosopher,. because.. wow. she sound like an interesting person way ahead of her time.,and, you with that incredibly powerful yet soft voice it's mesmerizing and so relaxing. Only wish I knew what she was singing/ saying.. can you like in the other songs do a translation. I find it interesting.

Azam, Can you explain some of the modal scale connections between Hildegards music and Middle Eastern music? It seems to have gotten lost in Western classical music after the Medieval/Renaissance periods.
