When he says "Your mother screaming" "That you don't deserve love", man, trying to picture a scene like that, is so hard. This lyrics are really heartbreaking. I love the contrast between the topic of the song and the light sound.
I think this album can show the ability that Arcade Fire has to create something sincerely beautiful. This feels like an unexpected kiss in an unexpected time of your life.
Describing my true experience with this song runs the risk of sounding fake. I just broke up with a live-in girlfriend of a few years, and decided to fly to Europe to visit wineries. I was half sleeping on the plane while listening to this album for the first time when this song came on. It struck me so profoundly that it woke me up. I looked out the window and was flying over the English Channel with the sun rising. The rest of that five week trip in the hills of Tuscany and deserts of Spain was defined by this song. I love it.
Your experience is so similar to mine. I, however, was flying over the Atlantic landing on Dublin. I cannot hear this song and not think about her, or the second her I met in Dublin. Every pint of Guinness since brings this song to mind. I love it so much I'm afraid of wearing it out so I don't listen to it often
I don't get it. It seems to have struck you profoundly that you 'Don't Deserve Love' - but you don't explain whether that's because of your previous relationship, your long-haul carbon footprint, or your alcohol habit. Please elaborate.
But it's funny that on every song someone says "best song on the album". I think this album will really grow on people and will be considered as one of the best.
widM- I agree 100%. This album is very different from the others and I see a lot of exactly what you said too. Every song has some people saying "this is the best on the album, you guys did an amazing job" and others saying "this is the worst album Arcade Fire ever put out. It's just terrible." I personally think that in 10 years a lot of people will be thinking "I hated this when it came out but now that it's grown on everyone else, and Pitchfork retroactively changed their score from 5.6 to 9.5 (Just like they did Radiohead's catalogue, they love to do that). Arcade Fire really did a great job not making the same album over and over."... Who knows though, maybe people will just give it the one listen and move on to what's next, I hope not though. Arcade Fire took a chance and I feel like they did a good job. I think the tracks I'm not huge on now will grow on me but Creature Comfort is amazing... Sorry for the book long response haha
How, in god's sake, so much people can state that this is not a good album?! This song alone is a masterpiece. Maybe one of the best poems written by them. Such a rollercoaster of emotions! In that sense, only comparable to Neighborhood #1 and Intervention.
If God is Love... Love truly is all that we need to look at to live in God's light. Not a book, not a ritual, not bullying others into what you believe. Love is all we have.
God bless Arcade Fire for this outstanding, outrageous album. I dont need religion, I have Arcade Fire. My last Service was on July, 2nd in my Hometown, BERLIN!!!
cant explain the amount of love and nostalgia and hurt this song gives me, and I don’t want to explain it like everyone else in the comments is, because I’ll start crying
I gotta say, I really respect the new direction they've taken this album in, even though it took me a while to like the singles & some of the others have yet to grow on me. But songs like this are full of the very essence of Arcade Fire - I can almost imagine a stripped down version of this on the first EP. They sure haven't lost it.
Every record that divides people is good in my opinion. It keeps music fresh and unpredictable which is what we need. The old albums still exist and you can't expect bands as good as this to stick to one sound. Let them do their thing and experiment.
I think that's fair enough. I think Everything Now was risky and for some it paid off but for a lot of others it has proven too drastic a change. Will be interesting to see how people view it in a year or two.
I meant more that the change isn't necessarily the problem but that the quality doesn't seem good enough. Consider how many of the album's songs just repeat the title of the song over and over again.
That's absolutely true. Lyrically the album seems weaker, but I'd also put a lot of that down to the disco genre format. Disco invites repetition and direct lyrics as opposed to alternative rock which has a greater capacity for rich lyrics and storytelling. I do agree that the quality is not as good as the other four albums though.
Huh, I didn't consider that. Some of the ones that repeat a lot aren't disco, though (Chemistry, Infinite Content - Infinite Content probably being the worst offender of the album). I actually don't think of the album as trying to be a dance album but as trying to be a pop album in the way Bowie/Talking Heads/etc. can be considered pop. It's also not specifically one genre in a way that's actually kind confusing. It's synth/electronic-heavy on about half the songs or more and guitar-heavy in about a third of the songs. Earlier records have diversity without giving up coherence musically, but I don't think this album is coherent musically (although theme-wise it's as coherent as the Suburbs if not more, it's just not very subtle about it). Maybe due to multiple producers? I don't know. Lyrically, maybe they should have chosen subjects that were more personal (or approached them in a way that was more personal and fleshed-out). Most of these songs feel very 3rd person observation (even when it's written from a first person perspective) rather than the 1st person narrative you see in most of their other work. It feels very much "kids these days", and while it brings up topics worth talking about, it's doing so a bit too blatantly and not adding much new to the conversation. Musically, instead of bringing on multiple producers to help them create something that they wanted, I think they should have taken the time to experiment on their own and figure out what they wanted to create, even if that took years longer. Month of May is one of the simplest songs on the Suburbs, but it took them years to get it where it ended up (the song actually references this), and I think it stands up as a great song. I feel like there are several songs on this album that could really benefit from more time. Also, some of the sounds they use on this album seem strange (occasionally just annoying), and I think more time might have changed that (more time - weird sounds seem less novel - they change it to make it more timeless), but that's speculation.
This is an important remark! You like it because it's now familiar. Or, it's a "slow burn" of profound quality. This album didn't hit me instantly, although I was nuts about the single Everything Now. I went to two concerts. Tracks like this one are are now like comforting friends. The single Everything Now just seems like blah-blah-blah pop (although still a total hoot at a big concert!!) I think the album is generally great. Because it is familiar, or it has essential goodness in its soul? I don't know. Some of the crap I listened to in the 90s lights me up with hysterical nostalgia, although it's still pretty crappy.....
This, Put your money on me, Good God Damn, Creauture Comfort and Everything Now all are pretty brilliant. Peter Pan, Chemistry and Infinite content should have just been left off the album.
This song make me feel that the whole album had a deep meaning. I felt so happy while listen to it this morning, and this is enough for me. Unfair critics, great album, meaningful songs, like this. Greetings from Colombia, see you in december : )
This song hits in a very real way. The rest of the album up until this point left me feeling quite empty, probably due to the masterfully vapid theme throughout the record, but then this song came in and hit me like a freight train. With this track, I think Arcade Fire is describing the heart of their new sound and what it all really means within the context of all the show and exposition going along with it. Good job Arcade Fire, you continue to wreck me ways I didn't even know I needed.
This.... We saw Arcade Fire a few weeks ago... When they played this song, me and my best friend were just paralyzed, we just stood there, gazing at the beauty that was happening in front of us... Arcade Fire is one of music's hidden gem... I can't say anymore
This record is so underappreciated, and I just don't understand why - the message is relevant for the times and most of it works musically. There are a lot of good tracks, but this one's my favorite. Everything Now, Creature Comfort and Electric Blue are also excellent.
It's just that people in general don't react well to change. Even Reflektor was trashed when it came out. Neon Bible was called a sophomore slump. Its a cycle that always happens.
like every arcade fire album. they have a song for every mood im in. this makes me feel totally hopeless of love , but that its how a feel today. on friday i was like kinda in a 'everything now' kinda mood. thats why i love so much arcade fire. its been like a soundtrack of my life.
This lifts the whole album - One of their best songs ever in my opinion!! So sad and beautiful that my eyes are swelling every time. "If you can't see the forest for the trees, just burn it all down and bring the ashes to me". Those lyrics give me the chills.
Honestly this is one album I seem to always have on repeat everyday. The lyrics could have definitely been improved on for certain songs (we can all agree on that) but the beats are on point which is what hooks me into playing this album and singing along. Thanks Arcade Fire.
Arcade Fire always give me such strong emotions! I was so afraid while listening to the album that there won't be anything purely emotional but when chours came in this song I bursted out crying. I am so thankful for this track
Just an awesome tune. Liked it the first time I heard it - gets better & better every time. They better play this one live when I go see them in Chicago Oct 30.
I'm not sure what he means by that. Religious people, or guys with messianic complexes? Not sure. Its powerful and evokes feelings, but I don't know how to directly interpret it
Absolutely love their new album, I was over the moon when I gave it a listen on vinyl yesterday!! I just love how they've tried new things and still sound great, it's such a great aspect for a band to have!!!!
I read yesterday the critics review and they buried the album. And i was like, this is not true... Today i can say this is not true because sound and lyrics are awesome. Long live Arcade fire.
Are suggesting that people are lazy or stupid enough to simply copy the opinions of others? That rather than form their own opinion on something they instead look to somebody else's opinion and go with that? That's a rather shallow and baseless assumption to make. This album is dividing both critics and fans because it's quite far removed from the Arcade Fire we know and expect. Even more so because this album rarely plays into the strengths of the band, neither musically or lyrically. It's a scattershot of styles, some of which work better than others, and that alone makes the album hard to appreciate as a whole. It's not musically consistent in any way, shape or form. It's OK for people to not like this work. As much as it for people to love it. I can completely understand why many would dislike it. I don't think the world is entirely mindless. I believe there are plenty of people, Arcade Fire fans and critics alike, who are capable of forming their own opinions on such things.
yeah it's not really baseless when i hear some people clearly just repeating (almost word for word, sometimes) opinions i've already seen given in certain critical articles. there are definitely reasons to dislike this album but you can't deny that many people have a tendency to parrot the beliefs of those they look up to
This is one of the most beautiful and saddest songs Arcade fire has ever created! I can't understand how no one reacts to this or the "Money + Love" video..... I keep waiting for them to play it again at their concerts. Someday you'll get the love and recognition you deserve.
Dies ist der Killer-Track. Sofort ins Herz geschlossen. Als promovierter Musikologe und Musik-Sezierer besonders angetan von den überraschenden harmonischen Wendungen. Well done, AF! Und vor allem großartige Produktion und hervorragende Synth-Arbeit von Herrn Butler (dem kleinen Bruder von Win!)
God, this is what I aspire to be a musician. This type of music. It's weird but it's great and an instant classic. One day i would want to get that point like Arcade Fire!
This song paints such an image. I just see 18 yr old Win driving down a long desert road at night in 80s Indiana, with a sad girl in the front seat. With flashbacks of the night seeing the girls religious mum and dad shouting at her and win saying "they don't deserve love" cause they are sinners, she runs away with him stops by their church to pray for forgiveness for deciding to run away from home that night, at the part of the song where win sings "come down off the cross" it's to tell her to come off the alter cause it time to go. and it ends with the back in the present on the deserted road driving into the sun rise
I put the new album to play and sat down playing any mobile game on my phone. I listen to everything thinking "well that is ok", but when it came to this song I took my attention from the cell phone and started to cry, a lot, inexplicably. I can't stop listening anymore.
I love them so much and this song broke my heart. So effortlessly beautiful but so raw. It made me wonder what was this about. Luckily Win and Reg seem as happy as usual so i guess even if the song was about them, they got through it.
Yea after the new album release. This still is the most heartbreakingly beautiful song they’ve done. Regine’s heavenly vocals and Win at the end. Underrated album
Not only is this the best song on the album, but I believe it's one of the best songs arcade fire has ever made
agreed. i think its my 2nd or 3rd AF song ever
A masterpiece among masterpieces.
I feel you....I really do...✌️
Aye
Agree. And nice picture
This is gorgeous. Instant classic.
Sebastian Suarez You couldn't have even finished the song yet, what are you talking about?
Allé Karidi It's been out for a few hours already...
Allé Karidi album come out well before they put up these uploads of it
Siiiiii
Hate to be nitpicky, but "instant classic" is an oxymoron.
When he says "Your mother screaming" "That you don't deserve love", man, trying to picture a scene like that, is so hard. This lyrics are really heartbreaking. I love the contrast between the topic of the song and the light sound.
that part hits me so hard :(
Not only is this one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard but it’s also one of the songs that doesn’t get nearly the attention or respect it deserves.
I think this album can show the ability that Arcade Fire has to create something sincerely beautiful. This feels like an unexpected kiss in an unexpected time of your life.
Tiago Homder beautifully said, so powerful man

Beautiful
This is the best song on the new record, mainly because it feels the most effortless. Not repetative, not forced. Just beautiful.
Totally agree, the only one not too repetive and that builds and builds.
Its the only song on EN i like.
But it's funny that on every song someone says "best song on the album". I think this album will really grow on people and will be considered as one of the best.

The lyrics just beautiful. Implanted ideas even buried by time often arise and affect us for life and also our poor love ones, very sad but true. :'(
Their voices in the last 2 minutes are magical! Favorite song along with Everything Now
someone please tell me that I'm not the only one who cried like a baby with this song
i cried like a duck that had just lost a piece of bread.
ten minutes ago.
@Celtic Revival / Adfywiad Celtaidd it can also be sign of amazingness
Could still cry
No no, def not the only one. It's a one of a kind song.
"Mary, role away the stone. The men you love always leave you alone". That line broke me.
I listen to this song the first day of school and the last day every single year ❤ holds a special place in my heart fr
probably the most beautiful Arcade Fire song to date.
Amazing track to have near the end of the album. One of their best songs period
How, in god's sake, so much people can state that this is not a good album?! This song alone is a masterpiece. Maybe one of the best poems written by them. Such a rollercoaster of emotions! In that sense, only comparable to Neighborhood #1 and Intervention.
It's maybe their best album. I think many realize that now LOL. But so many at first ragged on it. Such an amazing tune
It took the world a couple of years to catch up to this album. Its December 2021 and it all makes sense now. Here we are.
I'm so happy, you can create new albums, styles, but the essence never get lost, I'm fucking in love for this álbum!!!!
Right, that is signs of one of the greatest bands... Reinvent without Reinventing!!! AC💕💕💕💕

Definitive highlight of an overall great album.
I knew this was a beautiful song. To hear this live the other night in Dallas at the AF show was amazing. It’s so emotional.❤️

The golden thread continues with Arcade Fire.....that falsetto at the end is absolutely heart breaking. Particularly the Christ types....

Wasted Hours it is a really good album, fans and critics are doing too much! its saddening to watch
Put Your Money On Me is amazing
Dies ist der Killer-Track. Sofort ins Herz geschlossen. Als promovierter Musikologe und Musik-Sezierer besonders angetan von den überraschenden harmonischen Wendungen. Well done, AF! Und vor allem großartige Produktion und hervorragende Synth-Arbeit von Herrn Butler (dem kleinen Bruder von Win!)
Bless arcade fire for this amazing album 🙏🏻
Syd it's turning into one of the best tunes they have done
It's my favorite album!
Brilliant
So brilliant. I've NEVER loved a band as much as these artists. Thank you Arcade Fire for your work. Your message.
Listen on a good player, lights off, no distractions.. Beautiful song and probably my favourite AF track..
God, this is what I aspire to be a musician. This type of music. It's weird but it's great and an instant classic. One day i would want to get that point like Arcade Fire!
This song is so precious
This song paints such an image. I just see 18 yr old Win driving down a long desert road at night in 80s Indiana, with a sad girl in the front seat. With flashbacks of the night seeing the girls religious mum and dad shouting at her and win saying "they don't deserve love" cause they are sinners, she runs away with him stops by their church to pray for forgiveness for deciding to run away from home that night, at the part of the song where win sings "come down off the cross" it's to tell her to come off the alter cause it time to go. and it ends with the back in the present on the deserted road driving into the sun rise
What a videoclip!!!! OMG
That would be a great video! You should totally pitch that to Arcade Fire, on Twitter maybe.
2:23 love this part
5:00 😉
You deserve all the love in the world for such an amaizing album.
Aw man I’ve been listening to this song for 5 days straight. Can’t get enough of it. It makes me cry. :(
Great song but The last 2 minutes of this are truly special.
All songs are very deep and very meaningful!.. This is true Art!
yeah
The concept and lyrics at the end of this song are just breathtaking...
A modern masterpiece that captures today’s sorrows and today’s joys
I put the new album to play and sat down playing any mobile game on my phone. I listen to everything thinking "well that is ok", but when it came to this song I took my attention from the cell phone and started to cry, a lot, inexplicably. I can't stop listening anymore.
Wow. This made me emotional!
What a piece of art! Thank you so much guys, you always give us amazing music.
Beautiful... Definitely an incredible record...
Unashamedly have been listening to this for the past 4 hours on loop
This one could be the best of the album
Canción maravillosa, lástima que falten canciones con esta musicalidad y ritmos en este album.
Jodidamente increíble... Arcade fire... Haces que no pierda la esperanza en la música
I honestly had to listen to this song a few times, before it hit me like a truck
I love them so much and this song broke my heart. So effortlessly beautiful but so raw. It made me wonder what was this about. Luckily Win and Reg seem as happy as usual so i guess even if the song was about them, they got through it.
This song brings tears in my eyes for some reason...
Wow. whitout words.... Definitivamente mi grupo favorito
6 anos depois e ainda molha meus olhos
AF always do something brilliant.
Yea after the new album release. This still is the most heartbreakingly beautiful song they’ve done. Regine’s heavenly vocals and Win at the end. Underrated album
It just makes me cry and happy at the same time.
