    A Rolling Stone reporter asked David Bowie if Nirvana liked his cover of their song the Man who sold the world. David Bowie looked at the reporter like I’m gonna slap you look. And said I like their cover of my song very much they did a good job.

    While he never had a "technical" good singing voice to me Kurt's voice always sounded just fuckin cool it felt like you were listening to just a regular guy singing instead of someone always having to show off their voice every 5 seconds with flashy vibrato or belting every note it was just a genuine voice that he sang with

  • @Im_Old_Gregg
    @Im_Old_Gregg 2 года назад +30

    I think you may focus more on the technical aspects of singing due to your training and background. For the rest of us dummies i think the attraction to singers like layne and Kurt are the emotion they emit through their voice.

  • @kengaroo67
    @kengaroo67 2 года назад +18

    I want to say, just for all of the haters and folks saying "what's the big deal with Kurt?" or "I never understood the appeal", Kurt wasn't supposed to be the greatest vocalist of all time. No one in Grunge was. Layne wasn't "great". Eddie mumbled his way through songs and crooned. Chris... Well, Chris was amazing.
    Grunge wasn't about the polished technicality of previous 80s pop or Hair bands. It was supposed to be raw in voice and emotion. Full of angst and pain. THAT'S why it appealed to kids at the time. It was different. It was real.

    Id be so miserable if the only thing about the singing that i payed attention to was the technical ability. Grunge isnt about sounding perfect, its about portraying the emotions youre singing about.

    It’s worth mentioning that it was typical of bands appearing on MTV Unplugged to do multiple takes of songs, with the network airing the best one. Kurt refused to do it. They did one take and that was it. If somebody sang a note sharp or hit a clunker, so be it. You got an authentic performance… warts and all.
    EDIT: That’s the reason you heard feedback and that whoopsie on the guitar. Any other band would’ve just redid the take and those foibles would’ve never seen the light of day.

  • @thisistheway3456
    @thisistheway3456 2 года назад +1

    It's all imperfection from Kurt and just Nirvana's sound in general. That's why this is my favorite song and performance. Authenticity at it's best, although it is a cover song

    Not a mistake on the guitar. That is meant to be a flourish. Its hard to tell on the original Bowie track because David sings over it. Having gone back and watched it live though, that is supposed to be there.

    Maggie, I love your reactions. There is a ton of stuff going on in the unplugged concert. He really didn’t hit the wrong note, he was known to experiment with different guitar voicing because he was a basic guitar player at best, and that worked to his advantage greatly in his singing and song writing. That basic playing style is what made his music all his own, even when doing a cover. If you listen to the voicing of that 1/4 minor note, you will also hear that same note vocally in places throughout the song. Is that a coincidence he AND the guitar were “off pitch” in similar parts (instrumentally and vocally) of this cover? Go back and replay this song, removing all frame of reference to your Juilliard / Opera training. It is sometimes difficult to get by what some call “sour” notes, when hearing a band or genre for the first time. Sadly, like so many brilliant artists before him, Kurt’s inner demons finally won the battle and he committed suicide, a brilliant artist and young man, gone too soon. RIP Kurt!

    As someone who grew up in that era, it’s sad that someone who is classically trained in singing judges kurt based off years of learning how to sing a certain way.
    As you know there are those who hate classic singing as being to strict in following the guidelines of “how to sing”
    Kurt wasn’t the best singer we all know tht but that’s not what drew us to him.
    It was realism, emotion, and the ability to be like us as we “sing in the shower” missing notes or singing off key. In order for you to fully “understand” this group or even this genre you need to forgo your “training from your school of fine arts” and just allow your emotions to take over.

    This is David Bowie's cover. You can come up with a Nirvana genuine piece. And Kurt's voice is not scholastic voice or a laboratory voice you learn in music schools. If you learn the same things you come out of school the same artists, there is nothing original in all of you. This is why people liked their music, it came from inside of them, not from inside the school.

I also have to say, I actually enjoy the little imperfections in their performance, besides the feedback that is, that sucked, but the rest just added more character to the song.
    A couple of other artists I would love to see you cover, Beth Orton, who's voice is somewhat reminiscent of Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries, rip, try her tracks Sweetest Decline, Pass in Time and Central Reservation! The other, is another 90's indie staple, Elysian Fields with lead singer Jennifer Charles, who has an unbelievably sultry and seductive voice, recommend giving Black Acres and Rope of Weeds a listen.

Also Kurt did not learn guitar like a normal person his playing was pretty basic but at the same time genius, he wouldn't care if he missed a fret.

    As others have said, part of his appeal as a singer was the emotion he was able to transmit. If you listen to the rest of this _Unplugged_ performance, you can really feel the pain in his voice. Less than 5 months after this recording, he was dead by his own hand. The pain was just too much for him.
    If anyone is interested in his story, the film _Montage of Heck_ talks about all of this and I would recommend watching it.

    As a trained singer, you are going to have a hard time with Curt. He's a lazy singer who barely opens his mouth when he sings. He doesn't enunciate at all. When weird Al parodied Smells Like Teen Spirit, he referenced Curt singing with marbles in his mouth. As for this performance, it was on MTV unplugged and was very hard to watch since he didn't really like anything anyone did during the performance, and everyone, including MTV, thought it was going to be a dumpster fire. The band was apparently in the middle of breaking up, and Curt was trying to get clean and was going through withdrawal. It's weird that a performance everyone thought was epically going to go down in flames would end up being Nirvana's most iconic performance.
