Kevin, I am an artist and I make "how to " videos,. Your solution is by far the best that I have seen. Thank for making this video and I definitely subscribed to your channel! Thank you again!
Said it on the other video, but thank you, as this is by far the best solution I have come across. I'll say it for you, if you dinnae want tae, at least for my needs, it is the ultimate set-up!
Glad you found it useful. If you look at any of my videos you can see I continue to use this to this day. One for my overhead camera, one for my mic :)
Thanks so much for this clip. I just got the rode boom and it holds up gh4 with a small mtf lens like a champ, doesn't even seem like it would get strained over time since gh4 is so low weight.
Wow what great information! Thank you so much:) I have a new “how to” YT channel and my tutorials are all about Thai fruit and vegetable carving. I don’t think anyone is watching them but I’m having a lot of fun making them:) So all of my videos are shot with the camera facing straight down, and I’ve been puzzling for months about finding a better way to film. My latest attempt at rigging up a contraption was to drill a sideways hole through an old microphone stand and put a 1/4” bolt through it. It has been working, but tonight it broke...which lead me to YT in search of a solution. When I came across your video I was so happy to finally find a good solution that I ordered the 360 camera mount right away... Thank you soooo much again, cheers:)
+Thai Fruit and Vegetable Carving Laura Lynn That's great. It's pleasing that you found this so useful. If you check any of my videos you will see that I still have this setup. Enjoying what you do is half the battle. If you're passionate about it you will succeed. Keep up the good work.
This is just what I was looking for. Thank you so much! I just hope I have ordered the right things. As I wanted a floor standing microphone stand for the camcorder.
Nice one Kevin, just what i was looking for mate. I did make a small gantry out of plastic tubing for mounting the DSLR camera on, which was fine for filming myself talking but when i wanted to film some footage about the synth i was using, that is where i was struggling, the gantry wasn't really much use for that, so lo and behold i found your channel. I ordered the Rode boom, which arrived this morning and the ball head, which hasn't yet but i'm sure it will be just the job for what i need in my studio. Your presentation was well done and easy to follow. Subscription done, take care.
Thanks for the kind words George. I encourage you to search for other overhead videos on my channel as I've made a few changes since this video. I'm now using a cross bar that hangs over my desk.
@@KevinMuldoon One "stupid" question though, the Rode PSA1 has a male 3/8 right, and I need to find a female counterpart for ballhead. Is it standard with 3/8 for most ballheads?
hey kevin, just want to say Thanks! just bought rode psa1 and i really love it, really useful for making art video and reviews for my channel. wish i could buy from your link but my country is too far from either uk or us.
I want this setup but would prefer a Go Pro simply because its much lighter and easier to move around. Any idea if this would work? What connections would I need?
Couldn’t afford the Rode arm but I purchased the ball head today, I hope it works with the cheap arm that I already own 🤞🏻 Awesome vídeo! This is exactly what I was looking for long time ago! 💋💋
Kevin Muldoon I really need some help here, so I got the ball head but now I have a new issue 🤣 the screw in the microphone arm is 1/4” and the one in the ball head is 3/8”, what kind of adapter do I need to make it work? Thanks 🙏
You will find thread adapters on Amazon and eBay etc. Be aware that the ballhead could be too heavy for your arm. I initially bought a cheap boom arm myself and it couldn't take a lot of weight. More professional ones such as the Rode arm are designed to carry more weight.
Kevin Muldoon exactly my thoughts when I weight the ball head :( there was a cheaper, smaller ball head one that I should try instead of this one that is super heavy, I want it to film craft vídeos so no much of a deal but I don’t want to break my camera just because I bought a cheap microphone arm 😂😂 thank you so much for the help, your vídeos are great! I really like them
I've actually switched to using a tripod for overheard shots. This setup was arguably the best for being handy, but the camera shakes sometimes so footage didn't always look good. Hopefully you can sort it out.
Kevin Muldoon i’m watercolorist artist and try to find the best “overhead” camera stand for my watercoloring tutorial.. Then i find your vlog, once again thank you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hi Kevin, thank you very much for this #lifehack! I would like to know if the rode arm will be able to handle heavy DSLR cameras? I have a Canon 70D without a flipscreen and i've attached a separate monitor that's shoemounted on the DSLR. the weight is about 9-11 lbs. I would like to hear your thoughts about this. I really need a simple overhead rig that doesn't take much space. I have no room for tripods, I can only utilize the space that my table provides me. Thanks so much!
+jhon lacaba Glad you found it useful. As per www.rode.com/accessories/psa1 , the PSA1 supports most microphones weighing between 700g (1.5lb) and 1.1kg (2.4lb) when combined with shock mount. If the combined weight of the camera and ball head are less than 1.1kg you should be ok.
Can I mount it without the ballhead to the cheap boom arm? is the thread the same size? Because I have a webcam that I wanna use as a secondary overhead camera
The RØDE has definitely better built quality and is way smoother to use than the Heil PL2T, the Blue Compass or even the K&M 23860 boom. I bought and used them all (for heavy microphones and for my SONY A5100 with quite heavy lenses mounted on) and finally decided the Australian gear was the best to go with! Trust me: None of those is such as reliable and easy to use as the RØDE PSA1!!!
I swear I've got the same boom arm & ball-head mount but my thread seems way bigger on my boom arm and it fits my Shure SM7B perfectly but my ballhead won't even nearly fit it... Any advice here I've been trying to figure this out for months
Kevin Muldoon never even knew it was possible, went to my local hardware store & they said it wasn’t a thing... just looked on amazon & found it instantly. Thanks mate
I'm using a Manfrotto clamp now to hold everything in place. It's a completely different setup now. Sorry, I'm still not sure which spring you're referring to.
AHH ok. You'll find it difficult to get a replacement spring from the company unless it's from a reputable company such as Rode. You might have to just replace the arm.
Kevin, the information was great but you seemed very nervous and disorganized. You kept playing with the ball head and that was distracting. Slow down. Make a script or an outline to stay on track. Do a test video and watch it and make corrections before you do the actual video for you tube. Keep going. You will get better.
Your attention to details is wonderful! I feel like you actually BELIEVED in that product instead of just wanting to sell me something.
Haha thanks. Well, I'm not trying to sell anything. Just trying to share what I've learned 👍👍👍
This is such a simple and obvious solution, I was confused why I hadn't seen anyone else do it! Good video!
Glad you found it useful.

I have two as well. They're fantastic.
You are a very clever man and I adore how truly passionate you are. Thankyou too much for teaching me a lot. Happy New year x
Happy new year to you too 😎👍
This is awesome purchasing both from Amazon today. This gives much more flexibility than using a fix overhead stand.
Thanks Joyce. Check my latest videos.
Due to my table wobbling I've went back to using a tripod, but the mic boom arm is more flexible.
I bought the Blue Compass boom pole with a Neewer ballhead to work with my 80d dslr... hopefully this works..
very informative mate! This helped me more than most boom arm vids

Depends on the GoPro I'm connection, but you'll maybe need an adapter for HDMI out. Then you'll need a video capture device to record the footage.
