      i'm sure the philippines has liberalized their economy to become more open to foreign ownership; but until that 60/40 law gets amended, the philippines will be stuck as a service-oriented economy. that law alone has kneecapped the philippines into the laggard it was in the 90s-00s.

    The Philippines was actually the largest nickel exporter in the world in the past but a lot of mining sites were closed during the time of Gina Lopez when she was the Secretary of the Dept of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). So at least we know that the Philippines can ramp up nickel production in the future as the need arises.
    The Philippines though should stop exporting nickel ores and export them as finished products. Not only the nickel ores. All the metals mined should be processed in the Philippines before exporting them.

      Steel Refineries is energy intensive and uses a lot of coal or gas. Not to mention the carbon emission of operating such heavy industry. Processing nickel into ingots locally won't be price competitive since our energy prices is so expensive.

    Meaning you are spending a lot of your dollars buying their goods and little in return because of deficits in exports and imports.
    Thanks I learned a lot from your informations.
    Luckily we have OFW to drive this country growth using dollars buying other countries product to import in the Philippines.

    The Agriculture sector is the Achilles heel of the Philippines, the previous administrations did NOT develop the potential of the industry, instead, it FOCUSES on the creation of Special Economic Zones, which is a BIG problem for land conversion. The food security of the Philippines is in a CROSSROADS now, before, we are exporting rice to other countries, now, we are the BIGGEST importer of Thai and Vietnamese rice, more than China, and we have to help the Filipino farmers to feed the country, we CAN NOT rely forever on our neighbors for food, because if there is a CRISES, many countries will surely STOP exporting food for their OWN security.

    The Philippines has the lowest export output in the ASEAN 5 but still manages to make it as the 3rd largest in terms of GDP. Imagine the potentials the Philippines have. PH should export more than import more. Surplus is better than deficit. But the high energy/electricity prices in PH plus outdated infrastructure make investors think twice therefore the manufacturing potential will be transferred to other countries instead in PH. Fortunately, decade old infra projects are now being started and plans for energy independence (nuclear, more power plants) are being accelerated and pushed by the present admin. If you are an investor and want to invest in manufacturing, first that will come into your mind is access to your factory (infrastructure) and the cost of operation (mainly electricity/energy). In terms of workforce, PH has no problem with a population of 110m+, a young population and a growing middle class. PH don't need to follow Vietnam since Vietnam is following China's steps (communism in governance but very capitalistic). PH is not communist. Maybe follow Thailand or Indonesia.

    • @wavemaker2077
      @wavemaker2077 2 года назад +3

      Infrastructure projects are all over the Philippines. It is not right to say that the infrastructure in the Philippines are outdated. It's the opposite actually. A lot of infrastructure are brand new since they were completed just recently during the Duterte administration.
      Thailand is going down and is lead by the military generals. So it is not right to follow Thailand. Besides, Thailand's gdp growth has been sluggish for years now. Indonesia is doing well but the Philippines has been growing faster than Indonesia. So why would the Philippines follow Indonesia when it is growing faster than Indonesia? The Philippines is doing well. Just trim the edges and the economic growth can even be faster than it is now. No need to follow the other countries.

      Since america is printing dollars like crazy, our peso is affected since we are connected to dollars. We also have the war in ukraine so you can thank uncle biden for it. Now we have the taiwan problem.

    • @gieeeno
      @gieeeno 2 года назад

      Covid and the ukraine war take the biggest chunk of the reason, there are other minor reason but these two is the major one. Covid shut down our economy (like others) and made the gov't spend a lot while the economy is down, that's a big blow on our national budget since covid is an emergency we didn't prepare for, then the ukraine war happened thanx to Russia and oil supply got cut or in a sense hostage, hence making every prize go up higher since to transport goods and do trades of every kind, you need gas.

Philippines Export potentials, I think are: TROPICAL Fruits and Vegetables, Marine Products (Mariculture and Aqua culture), processed FOOD and Drinks, Cosmetics, Hygiene Articles. Furniture made from Bamboos and Rattan, Fashion , Accessories, Herbal Medicines and some more Agriculture will benefit all Filipinos including those living in the remotest areas. They have to be provided with high value planting materials for FREE, then assisted with good infrastructure such as Post Harvest facilities, Farm to market Roads, Transportation and promote ECO- and FARM Tourism.
