I'm half Iranian and my dad was the same way. I thought that when I was 18 I could do what I wanted and was open about having a boyfriend. My dad could not deal and made my life hell for 3 years. He acted like he didn't know what a boyfriend was and would keep asking me "what is boyfriend? Is it friend who is boy? What do you do with boyfriend?" The concept was so beyond his understanding. The funny thing is my brothers were allowed to have girlfriends as soon as they were teenagers, even allowing gfs to sleepover and staying out as late as they wanted.
my parents were the same, they didn't allow me to date but right when I graduated college they switched to asking why I'm not married yet. Hmm, I wonder why
I honestly feel bad for people of those cultures where they treat women so horribly with traditional standards and treat men like they're the best thing on earth which I personally disagree with that kind of treatment and I feel like people should just be treated as such people not better or worse unless if that person is a extreme toxic manipulative piece of **** and just needs to go away because it's not fair at all and I would feel the same way for if there is cultures out there that treat men just as bad as because again people should be treated as people they should be allowed to do things within reason not follow standards of feeling like their lives are being controlled by that culture... I did want to apologize for the long comment but that's just how I've always felt about that type of stuff even though I was born American
I've never dated, always been very isolated but I've had so many toxic friends I'm good at sniffing out BS, I feel It helped me grow as a person. But it's still traumatizing.
I hope you find good, genuine friends. I really do. Ive had similar people in my life, not by choice, who are toxic. Its awful and i hope you find people you consider genuine.

I’m so sorry that y’all went through all that. I had a few toxic relationships, and they were all stepping stones to my best friend I’m married to now.. and I’m beyond blessed. I can’t wait to hear how y’all met your hubbies! I met mine working at Walmart. He was maintenance and I was a cashier. He would sweep by my register several times. It took me awhile to notice that he only did that around my register and no one else! He would say hi to me or “how’s my friend”, but it wasn’t until we were in the break room that we had our first conversation. I was writing in my little notebook and he asked what I was doing. I told him that I was writing name ideas for my sims when I play later. His eyes lit up and said “you’re a gamer?!” I said oh yeah I love to game. He knew I was the one first time seeing me, and the fact I was a gamer confirmed it for him. 10 years later we are happily married in our own little gamer bubble.

I don't think we are open enough with our relationships and that people are ready for different things at different times in their life! I love how you talk about "doing the doing" and that you had multiple relationships without that part, I hope that some people are gonna watch and think "i do it when I'm ready and safe". Omg! You guys have the same story as I do! Sika, I still have scars on my neck from my ex cutting my throat! He stalked me even after he got married and had kids. And who did I find after all this? My hubby! We will be celebrating 31 years in Dec. And yes, he has such a big and caring heart. Met him at my lowest and he treated me like a queen...to this day. Yes we’ve had our ups and downs but we couldn’t have too many of those with 7 kids to raise. Lol. I wish you both such wonderful memories of the past, a happy present and a bright, loving future! Kept calling and messaging me about how much he missed me etc. etc. I sent him a text that I don't think we should see each other and that I wanted him to stop calling and messaging me. The next day, I got a call from a woman I didn't know. It was his girlfriend. She told me that they started dating weeks before I broke up with him. He even had proposed to her. We talked about him quite a bit and she told me that she destroyed the ring he gave her. A few weeks later she called me again, asked if he had contacted me again, I said "no" and she said "Ok, thank you" and hung up. I think she got back together with him. He's always been incredibly good at gaslighting. I guess she did dump him later though, since he tried to call again a couple of months later with a different number. I just hung up and when the number called again, my boyfriend answered the phone 😁
I’m so sorry you both had such bad relationships but this podcast episode has been such a relief for me since I just got out of a toxic relationship 6 months ago. My ex was very manipulative, emotionally and mentally abusive, and was just all around an awful person. He was 6 years older than me and I think he benefited from that age gap since I was 19 when we met (I’m 20 now, almost 21) to manipulate me. He tore my self-esteem down so much, pressured me into things I didn’t want to do, and made me push all my friends away so that he was the only person I had. Thankfully, I’m building my self worth back up and am a lot happier now! I reconnected with my friends and started back school since he convinced me to drop out a year ago. This podcast really helped feeling less alone ❤️

One of my exes made a new e-mail address after we broke up (because I knew he needed to get help and wasn't getting it and was becoming dangerous) and sent me e-mails from "myself" and from my roommate at the time. He also left creepy voicemails about watching me leave for work and stuff. I documented it and called the police, and then he didn't answer the door or the phone when the constable tried to tell him to bugger off. The officer had to track him down at work and he *ran away*, no less. He was a security guard at the time. I had to warn the people at my work (a church) and at my actual church so they could help keep him away from me if he showed up randomly. And then a few months later, I met my husband.
when you said you have to go through that one bad relationship to get the good one. that is the truth. before meeting my husband i had the worst relationship ever. like wow!! hit the nail on the head with that. oh amen we found the men we Jackie.

I'm happy that you both are happily married. I was going out with this one guy who told me," I'm only dating you too get to your friend." He then broke up with me and asked her out while I was standing there. She said yes and needless to say our friendship was over from that moment on

As someone who has experienced abuse and violence from my first relationship I can relate to Sika when she said her ex held a knife to her throat. That must have been a horrifying experience and it brought back flashbacks of when I was in those kind of situations with my ex at the time. I had a very bad relationship that felt like love in the beginning. After going to college an hour away things got dangerous and I feel so fortunate that I got out and now am with my amazing partner of four and a half years.

One of my exes made a new e-mail address after we broke up (because I knew he needed to get help and wasn't getting it and was becoming dangerous) and sent me e-mails from "myself" and from my roommate at the time. He also left creepy voicemails about watching me leave for work and stuff. I documented it and called the police, and then he didn't answer the door or the phone when the constable tried to tell him to bugger off. The officer had to track him down at work and he *ran away*, no less. He was a security guard at the time. I had to warn the people at my work (a church) and at my actual church so they could help keep him away from me if he showed up randomly.
And then a few months later, I met my husband.
Omgosh. I met my first "relationship" on ICQ, too!
I didn't know it was still around.
I'm glad you guys have gotten to the point where you can laugh at all those bad experiences at least a little bit.
when you said you have to go through that one bad relationship to get the good one. that is the truth. before meeting my husband i had the worst relationship ever. like wow!! hit the nail on the head with that. oh amen we found the men we Jackie.

I'm happy that you both are happily married. I was going out with this one guy who told me," I'm only dating you too get to your friend." He then broke up with me and asked her out while I was standing there. She said yes and needless to say our friendship was over from that moment on

As someone who has experienced abuse and violence from my first relationship I can relate to Sika when she said her ex held a knife to her throat. That must have been a horrifying experience and it brought back flashbacks of when I was in those kind of situations with my ex at the time. It is truly an awful thing to have gone through and I commend both of you ladies for being so strong and determined and not let the past define you. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Thank you for sharing your stories!
