Live. In 1 take. In front of an audience. Just an acoustic guitar, no pedals, effects, ear monitors, or any aids. Playing a song difficult as hell in an instrument that will unmercifully expose any flaws. Jerry was a beast of a performer.

As an old school classical guitarist I don't understand that all kinds of country players don't use their ring finger.
I think I was 16 before I touched the first Fender Stratocaster (a sunburst 1962) after playing nylon string classical guitars just like Jerry for 7 years.
Since then I have been playing all kinds of guitars for over 45 years now, and added ukes, mandolins and mandolas. It's a lot of fun.

introducing that makes it way harder to still be in a hand position that allows for quick palm muting, 3 fingers is kind of in between both worlds imho
besides a lot of fingerstyle players use their thumb to honky tonk to the G string from the bass strings and back, in classical guitar, using your thumb for the G string is a no-no.
you could very well argue that's a pointless limitation to give yourself all the same,

There's likely only a few, one is Tommy Emanuel. I saw him live at the State Theatre in Portland Maine on May 29 2013 and he single handedly reduced that stage to a smoldering pile of ashes. I saw Jerry Reed at the Asheville Civic Center and he should have been the headliner instead of Waylon Jennings. Jerry left us a legacy of great tunes and his guitar playing was simply unbeatable, I try to play like him a lot but he was so damn good it is a goal I will never be able to reach. Truly God given talent. I look up his tunes all the time and thank you Lord for all the greats that have come before us.

What great guitarists they are! Apparently Jerry hold the key part. This is mainly because this song was composed by him. Chet plays thrilling adlib and harmoney.

Fantastic. I love listening to guitar virtuosos of many styles and genres, after a while it all starts running together. This music brings it all back down to earth again and makes me smile. And I love the cleanness of the sound, after all the other styles start running together in my ears.

+Vince Black I love him too! I listened to him play "Malaguena" on YT, and wondered if that was a one-off in that style, or if he was really familiar with more classical/Spanish style guitar than is widely known. He did a beautiful version of it (though my favorite will always be Al Di Meola's version from "Elegant Gypsy")
