Over-Thinking Fantasy: Keyblade, Frostmourne, Dante's Rebellion, Etc

  • There is so much fantasy happening here...
    Obviously we all know that video game swords and other weapons are often created with nothing but coolness in mind, far removed from mundane reality. Sometimes it's amusing to over-think just how impractical they would be IRL though, and even to handle a physical reproduction to get a feel for exactly what's going on here.
    What I'm showing in this video (most of them are made as wallhangers, NOT battle-ready):
    Keyblade inspired by Fatal Crest from Kingdom Hearts II
    www.medievaldepot.com/product...
    Lich King Arthas' Frostmourne from Warcraft III
    www.medievaldepot.com/product...
    Dante's "Rebellion" from Devil May Cry

    Design inspired by Zelda Skyward Sword

      @@carthienesdevilsadvocatenr2806 If I had to justify it, a blade going down the central gap is probably going to hit the bulge between the fingers, a knuckle guard would be nice but unnecessary most of the time, the gap in the middle only becomes a huge weakness when they transition to energy weapons that could slice clean through the handle (but energy weapons have the magnetic field to account for this and may have hard technical limitations that prevent the blades from touching). Also, if a blade is going down the middle you can easily twist to bind it.
      I don't know, it's hard to speculate given the very different biology involved. Elites probably have a pretty atrocious range of motion given their posture, anything overhead seems like it would be difficult, but jabs and uppercuts seem viable. Their hands often seem to be farther back than their heads, so hand protection if probably a much lower priority than than binding and controlling an opponent's weapon.

    4:17 It has been said every time this sword comes up, but the gap in the blades does serve a very important purpose in the energy weapon version. The two halves of the blade require different charges to form and will short out explosively if they touch. This is one thing that makes them so devastating in the Halo-verse, the instant the blades penetrate a target they complete a circuit which adds an electrical explosion to the stab wound.

    Even the metal rings with on the grip are also from the WOTLK login screen and werent present on the original design/were just thin metal bands notable further in thus holding the leather/cloth/skin/fantasy bandage thing that worked as padding (AND EVEN THEN the spikes didnt become that pronounced on them till later).

    Fun video. Something most people get wrong about the Kingdom Key is that, unmodified (as in, no Keychain attached) it is more like a club than a blade to most living things. It cuts the Heartless, Nobodies, & Unversed, as beings of Darkness, very well. But against beings from the Realm of Light, it typically does less damage & more concussive/bludgeoning instead. Just look at how long it takes to whittle down ordinary people like Captain Hook, Clayton, or even Tron/Rinzler. It's also a magic weapon & conduit for magic, so swings that use magic (e.g.: Icebreaker, Fire/Blizzard/Thunder Edge) do more damage, while techniques like Sonic Blade & Ars Arcanum transform or coat the shaft in light magic, making it functionally more like a blade (lightsaber?) in motion.
    There are Keyblades that are far more sword-like too. But most don't use the teeth end like you did, Skal, or like an axe, as you said.

    • @ValkyrieBladenaster
      @ValkyrieBladenaster Месяц назад +15

      Yeah, the way a Keyblade usually swings is the teeth away from the target, functioning like a bludgeon. Although in lore, I believe explained in an Ultimania for KH2, the keyblade wielder can change the sharpness of the keyblade with their intent on the swing. Which is why Sora can cut through the skyscrapers in the Xemnas fight in KH2, but bonks regular enemies in combat. It's basically just magic, and when not being used with magic, it's a big metal key.

    • @ultilinium8
      @ultilinium8 Месяц назад +7

      More so is that is the keyblade isn't a consistently solid object. It's literally a "blade" of light and/or darkness, better yet, a manifestationof will power that interacts with the world as it's wilder pleases. It's appearance is irrelevant. If you will something like the Kingdom Key, which presents as a metal rod with key teeth, to cut through something, it will cut through it.

    It's actually a fair assessment, and quite true. If not for those studded rings on Frostmourne's handle, it would be a bit more practical.
    And just so you know, in case you might not, that Rebellion 2H sword is actually a scaled down version than the real one. A smith (or metal welder as he prefers to call himself) called Irish Mike once made a full-scale version of that sword. And simply put, it was SO HEAVY. Showed that the game character had super-strength to wield it so casually.

    I can get why Frostmourne can seem like it's overdesigned and a bit much, but believe me when I say that it's easily one of the more sensible designs I've seen out of Warcraft, barring the obviously more standard looking sword designs. In fact, it's even cooler because it looks like it's kind of practical for what it is. It's easily one of the coolest designs I've come across in fantasy. Sure, a lot of ornamentation, but for a cursed sword that steals souls? That's exactly what I would picture when I think of just that.
    Funny you mention possesed blades however.. Whilst Frostmourne itself can't animate itself to fight and shit, it does seem to have a form of sentience to it. Plus, Death Knights in Warcraft (which the dude who wields this, Arthas, is effectively the first of them) have an ability where they can animate weapons to fight for them for a short period of time. Arthas himself never does this himself, but other Death Knights can do it.
    Easily one of the most iconic weapons of fantasy however, and hands down *the* most iconic weapon in all of Warcraft. And hilariously, it's the most practical of the more iconic weapons from Warcraft to boot. Truly a weapon fit for a king.

    The spiky grip parts of Frostmourne were added on in redesigns, and are often embellished for props or visuals - it WAS meant to scar the spirit, so I guess in part through the pain of gripping that handle! Though your comment about "If it was meant to fly around" does have some merit in-game - the class created by the wielder of Frostmourne, Death Knights (yeah, edgy name), do take from his abilities and weapon style and have a skill called Dancing Rune Weapon, which does have the weapon float to fight and assist you for a time without having to be held.

    Based on a close up of the Sangheili hand, it wouldn't be awful for them. Their fingers really are split like that, having essentially 2 thumbs on opposite ends of their palm and two fingers between them with no other digits. They wear fancy gauntlets/vambraces/whatever you want to call alien forearm armor all the time so they could have some wrist support from that. They also aren't often shown to have their wrist bend on an axis where the spikes could hurt them, and their wrists may not even articulate that way normally. It's unclear why they have two points though, since single point versions exist and function. However, I have not been able to find any comparison between the performance of dual prong versus unified energy blades so there could plausibly be a significant difference in something, possibly battery life, overheating, or cutting potential. In conclusion, it's an alien weapon for alien hands and looks fairly reasonable in the hands of its creators. We don't know enough about the internal workings to critique the design choices too much, but some of the decisions certainly seem odd.

    Looking at fantasy weapons to determine their practicality as functional weapons is interesting - both fun and potentially educational. The PSA was well thought, too.
    It should be noted that when considering whether a weapon would be fit for purpose, its often obvious that it could (in theory) work for non-humans of various types but not for us. However, in a fantasy setting even humans may not have the same abilities and/or limitations that we do. The setting matters. A weapon that would be useless for real world humans (us) might actually be fit for purpose for them. It is probably generally true, though, that creators and designers of fictional weaponry think more about how 'cool' a weapon is, or looks, than how fit for purpose it is. 😉
    My only, minor, quibble is that some of us (me, lol) might not recognise or identify all of them. A brief mention of their name and origin/world/setting would be good (e.g. Frostmourne, World of Warcraft). The names in the vid title doesn't place which name goes with which weapon, or tell us which world it comes from. I'm guessing many will know, but still ...

    Skall, if you get the chance, there is a very specific video game sword that I would love for you to do a fantasy analysis of. The weapon in question is the sword of Caim, from the Drakengard video game franchise. In the first Drakengard, Caim's sword was your starting weapon, and its stats were kind of average. But even when you unlocked a bunch of other weapons, Caim's sword remained easily the most reliable and effective weapon in the entire game! And in Drakengard 2, Caim's sword was a sword you had to unlock in order to use, but once you DID unlock it, it was one of the STRONGEST weapons in the game. Caim's sword is honestly just as iconic as the character of Caim himself: a man who takes being sadistically insane and bloodthirsty and makes it look like the most epic state of mind EVER.
