Ed Boon Explains How Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities Are Made

- PlayStation Access interviews Ed Boon about how they make a Mortal Kombat 1 fatality and the origins of the incredible new Kameo system.
We played Mortal Kombat 1 at Summer Game Fest and talked to legendary Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon about the latest edition to the series. We quiz him about how they cook up Mortal Kombat 1’s fatalities, how MK1 is pitched at newcomers and experienced players alike and how the new Kameo system came about. We also try to get Ed to reveal his favourite Kameo fighter - no spoilers, but he does give us a clue.
Our Ed Boon interview also goes into fatalities - how they are made and, crucially, how they decide what does and doesn’t make the cut. The secret to a great fatality? Make ‘em laugh, apparently. Our resident horror fanatic Ash also quizzes Ed about how horror films have influenced Mortal Kombat’s iconic finishers.
We also go into the Mortal Kombat 1 story, explaining how Liu Kang became the main face of the game and how the team has used this to create the perfect introduction to new players. Ed Boon also tells us how the story shapes the character choices for the game and how the Kameo fighters let them get even more characters into the roster.

Ed is one of the chillest, humblest guys I've ever seen. There is this old video of him talking about every single Friendship in MK11 and he always praised the mocap and animation team in every single opportunity he had. Truly a wholesome human being.
If your fatality gets rejected by Ed Boon for “crossing the line” you should probably get help

Even though we didn't see Ash and Ed talking to one another, their voices were enjoying the vibe of chatting enough for me to love MK1 also. This game will be EPIC!! 😅🤘
Ed Boon with a Keyboard. The fatality I can see him doing is the Keyboard Slap from Wanted where James McAvoy slaps Chris Pratt with the keyboard and it spells out 'F*ck You'
The tech has came a long way from the days that they had to rip out Dan Pesina's spine to capture the fatality.
The Female with the Fireworks fatality finisher is the best I’ve seen so far yet kitana’s is also pretty insane while Kano retains the original which is nostalgic

Love these kinda vids. Takes me back when they had Demos of their other games in the Mk. The Suffering, Blitz: the league, Area 51. Mk Deception was a masterpiece with the mini games.

Looks like background for the pool stage changes from sun setting to night time. Every stage looks to be dynamic with the day to night transition.

My jaw still on the ground. I shot a twit, tweet (whatever you call it I'm 35) about tag team fatalities years ago to Ed Boon. Not the back and forth killing blow thing in this game but real 2 on 1 fatalities... looks like a great game

Second, it's funny how some people I've seen online want to say MK1 lacks passion. Could turn out great could go bad but I think just listening to Ed or others behind the scenes it's obvious amount of passion for the series

When the keyboard fatality was mentioned, I immediately thought of the keyboard scene in the movie Wanted.
MK9 had the nastiest fatalities in my opinion, but no Mortal Kombat has boring fatalities in my opinion. Reptile one in the MK1 trailer was absolutely amazing. Another banger from Ed Boon and NRS.
I didn’t like a lot of the deadly alliance fatalities
MKX absolutely had more dark and disturbing fatalities, many of which are still hard to watch today.
They were going through their emo phase at NRS

It would be funny if lore wise, every time someone fights someone else, fragments of past timelines are just waiting there for a chance to help in the fight and people just accept it as normal 😂

Ed Boons Fatality would have to involve his eyebrows. Like, Liu Kangs MK1 Fatality but instead of dragons, its eyebrows. Instant klassic.

if Ed is in mortal kombat, he should be like a one above all stan lee type of character like marvel has. his fatality could be erasing someone's face and while they scream he snaps his fingers and the guy impload into bits or something like that.

Speaking of Fatalities in the game, I wonder if the new game will have 2 different Fatalities for each character and also if there will be Stage Fatalities in this game? We will not have any arena objects to use in the fights. This is something we had before, but not in this new game.
I dont see why not. Every game seems to have two fatalities and even three since MK 2.
There are 2 fatalities... When asked what was boon's favourite fatality, he said that it was scorpion's... But the one we haven't seen yet
That's been the standard for nearly every MK game (and has been since the NRS era.) Each main character will get 2 fatalities and possibly more since we've seen the Kameo fatalities.
Stage fatalities have unfortunately been added later in the game via an update of some kind. (been like that for MKX and MK11)
Ed Boon’s Fatality: He takes his keyboard and smashes his opponent, then takes a bulky 90’s monitor and slams it on his opponents head like a helmet. He plugs it in to power and it explodes with his opponent’s brains coming out of the screen.
Some of these grab moves that end in the enemy just getting back up and still fighting unaffected like... disconnect the spine in the animation... then they just shake it off. XD
His fatality would 100% be writing the code for “Hello World” before he smashes his laptop on your face.

The last mortal kombat game I played was Mortal Kombat: Deception. And that was years ago probably around 2009.

tldr: they do it with motion capture. The motion capture actors actually get executed in real life, too.

So since they have gone down a new timeline, does that mean that the characters will now have new origins and history about them? Like for example, will Bi Han be controlled by Quan Chi to kill Hanzo’s family? Thanks

Cameos were already present in mk11 towers fully functioning and i think they were already in previous games

I wonder if bringing these Kameo assists means there'll be no chance to see those characters becoming actually playable. Sure, you can have an assist of OG Sonya and Jax, but does that means a different version of them could become playable?
We’ve seen Sub-Zero & Scorpion as Kameo fighters. So no, that doesn’t deconfirm them as fighters.

Does anyone know if this is faster paced than MK11? I preferred the combat flow of MKX and I’m worried that this game will be more like MK11 combat again..

Dvorah literally had the best fatalities in the last game… Li Kang turning into a dragon has always been cool too though. And Goros 4 arm limb split.

I feel Netherealm needs to flesh out the power hierarchy in their universe. Is Liu Kang the only Titan? Why?! How did he even manage to defeat a Titan (Kronika)? Where are the other Elder Gods? How do they rank to him? Do they even exist in this timeline?
