does the smart energy panel REPLACE the main breaker panel?

Not normally but it may be possible, normally you end up with two breaker panels. Your main breaker panel you have now will still power things that you need on all the time like the refrigerator and freezer that you want to stay running so your food does not go bad or thaw and rot. The wires that power the more luxury or secondary items in your home are connected to the smart energy breaker panel so that secondary things like (water heater, clothes washer and dryer, swimming pool pump, etc.) do not have power when using the home battery backup if during a power outtage. However if you decide that you need to turn on a secondary item like the water heater or home heat on a hot or cold day then you can still do that through the software on the smart energy panel through your cell phone or computer. You choose during installation what is wired to the smart panel. IMO a (Smart Energy Panel) is really going to help people with a battery backup and a large home and that maybe have several kids as some kids like to go around turning on all the lights even in the middle of the day and run other things and leave stuff running even when it is not needed and a child may not understand that they are on limited battery power.
