- This video isn't really about how to make light rays in Lightroom although we will in fact show you how to do it. There is much more about the process of making light rays in a photograph that can be used on lots of photographs in many different ways. Our hope is that you learn some of these tricks and apply them in other edits when possible.
Recently, we discussed how to change opacity, of a local adjustment in the Develop Module. In this video we will expand on that with one more Lightroom tip sure to make you happy.
We also have some other topics of discussion to expand on as well. In particular, there are 3 main things you should know and understand in order to better complete this advanced lightroom technique.
1. 00:01:19 We are using the Adjustment Brush
2. 00:02:05 How to create and switch between custom brushes

Wow, im blown away by this. Is there a way to start the A brush off the photo? For a photo where the sun isnt on the photo
I’m certain you should be able to move it off the photo if you minimize the photo preview size

Terrific tip. Thanks. However, I'd love to know other ways in which this tip can be utilized. Can you give us a few ideas?
Thanks for watching and commenting. We appreciate it a ton! I can certainly make a video on other ways this could be applied for sure. Keep your eyes peeled for that.

Hello Ted, I did create another video using the same trick but in a different way. You can watch that video here. ruclips.net/video/Mgntd6y-eQQ/видео.html Hope you like it. You're welcome for the tutorial. Our pleasure. Thank you for the support.

wow, blow my mind!
Awesome effect! :) By the way - is it possible to rotate the entire adjustment brush?
I wish I could do this. For some reason my layout isn't the same as yours.
So cool, thank you!!
You're welcome. Glad you liked it!
great tips
+photogonboard thank you much. Appreciated!
AWESOME
This is the first video of yours I've ever watched and I already subscribed. I love the way you explained it. Is there a way to have the light beams fade out before reaching the edge of the image? I have a sun set over a beach I took at f11 and the light beams are subtle and I've been trying to enhance them. This would work but would look crazy going to the edges of the photograph. Or do you have any other suggestions?
May transition possible in lightroom 5?
Awesome trick :)
Thanks much!
I am having a problem. When I start from brush A, then switch to B and Shift+Click somewhere, I get the ray. But then when I go back and click on the origin again with A, then switch back to B and click somewhere else, the ray doesn't start from the origin point but from the previous end point (point B). Any fix to this please?
Gracias maestro por este tutorial. Solo se hace con El keyboard? Yo tengo Mac però no viene Como lo hace Como usted. Debo hacer algun preajuste? Gracias
You could try a preset. I'm not positive it will work but try it and see what happens? Thanks for asking.
Subscribed. This is such a good explanation of how to do it. Seriously, I have never been on another channel or website that explained things like this. Thank you! I do have a question, I did this first on a photo that is similar to the one in your video, meaning very dense trees/branches and it looks great. However, I am trying to do this on an open sky (that already has small beams) and after creating the first ray, I can only pin the small pin (A) around the original pin, and it doesn't look natural. I can't click too close to the original pin or I see the "hand" - do you know why this is happening?
Hello Autum, thank you sincerely for the message. Apologies for the delayed response. I've been out of the area teaching a photographic workshop and I am just now returning home. I think I understand your question but I am not 100%. The first part..it sounds like your pins are too close together and that is why you get the 'hand' pop up. I trick could be to use your Navigator options in the upper left-hand corner to zoom into the photo (Another way to do this would be to hold your spacebar down and then click on the photo. This might work as well). Once you are zoomed in, the pins will appear farther apart and because of this, you should be able to do what you need. I REALLY want to make sure I answered your question, so please, let me know if this worked. If not, let me know and we will work together to figure out what the problem is. I want to make sure you get to use this tool without any trouble. I'm here to help. Sincerely ~ Adam
Thank you! I will try this and let you know. I think you do understand. I believe they ARE too close together, but I guess I am wondering (and will soon find out) if there is a way to get them farther apart.
I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly but it doesn't seem to work in lightroom5 Ive used the 2 brush settings but no matter what it doesn't link the 2 points (Windows 10)
yes.. Its not working here in my computer.
awesome.. thank you
Thank you seh rish, much appreciated. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I'm just gating the light beam at only end. No transition is happening. Help please.
im desparate.will it work on lightroom 5.7.1
How do I save this as a preset?
Excellent question, would you could do is set your A-B Brushes accordingly and then save ONLY the Adjustment Brush Settings as a Preset. You could also consider saving it as a Brush Preset as well. If you are unsure how to do either of these, let me know. We can add this to our content list to create.
I was able to save the brush settings as a preset. What will saving it as a brush preset allow me to do? I don't know how to do that.
Hi, Photonerd! im having trouble getting my brush to get to the beam effect when i hold down shift and click the other side of the imagie it doesnt do the bean effect
Hmmmm, let's see if we can decode this mistery. My first question is, what version of Lightroom are you using?
i have lightroom 5
UGH! You are not going to like me after this and that makes me sad inside. I am 99.9% positive this trick does not work with your version of Lightroom. It has been awhile since I have used Lightroom 5 or 6 but the part when you hold the shift key is really where the magic happens and for some reason that part does not work on the older versions. You would have to be in Lr CC to do that. Very sorry. Hopefully you can guide your anger toward Adobe and not the Nerds (hahaha, jk)
Okay, thank you photonerds for getting back to me! It makes complete sense now. Thank you. Im super bummed out now... Can you do a Video of how I can do light beams on lightroom 5? I would be soooooo happy!! I also subscribed
Thanks for the "Subscribe" that's awesome and much appreciated. I am thinking of some possibilites for Light Rays with older versions but not sure what the option would be to do it as clean. If I think of something I will make a video for sure. There has to be some way to do it.
It is not working in my lightroom. Can you suggest any adjustment?
It seems as though this technique (specifically, the shift key portion of the trick) does not work in older versions of Lightroom. If you are not using Lightroom CC this trick will not work. I am not sure of a way to do it in Lightroom. You can do it in Photoshop if you have access to it.
Thank you. It's useful. Subscribed.
Not working, Im using Lightroom Classic 2019
I holded Shift key and clicked on the other end, but the beam didn't appear :( even though I was on Brush B
Never mind! I was using LR v5!, but love this trick and tutorial
Is it me or this no longer works in the new lightroom version :( only the oldschool one ?
On a German Keyboard its "
I hold shift but theres no connection :(
ve have followed the steps exactly the same way.but it isnt working for me.can anyone help
Are you using a version of Lightroom that is not Adobe CC?
i am using lightroom 5.7.1
I didn't know this at the time of making this video. The part when you hold your shift key and click doesn't work in versions older than Lightroom CC. I am even certain it works in Lightroom 6. The trick is the shift key helps make the straight line but for whatever reason will not apply in Lightroom 5. In order to achieve this trick you will need to upgrade your software.
thanks anyway.keep teaching us.
You're very welcome! I will keep teaching for sure. Thanks for the support.
It doesnt work in Lightroom 5..... i tried a lot and became frustated..
what should i do now ?
how will it work in LR5 ?
You can upgrade your software to the new version. As you mentioned, it does not work in Lightroom 5. Sorry you were frustrated that's never good. I don't have a workaround for this, unfortunately.
ok..i will upragate it to 6..thank u so much
I already did the upgrade and it still doesn't work for me. Did it work for you?
What version of Lighroom did you upgrade to?
I got it. Very cool. Very, very cool. Wish I could have the dehazing and mist but this is nice.
does this sole work on lightroom 6? I am trying to do this on lightroom 5.6 and its not working. :S
Unfortunately it appears as though it does not work in the later versions of Lightroom. I was using Lightroom CC when I created this tutorial and it has been brought to my attention that the Shift Key portion of this trick does not seem to be working in older versions of Lightroom. That is unfortunate.
ah shoot :( any suggestions on how i can get this done in another way?
+Moussa Zeineddine that's a great question and the most common as this video here gets more attention. In order for me to experiment I'd need to get my hands on an older version of Lightroom. As of now I don't have a solution to share. I suck, I know. Haha
Yes, it doesn't work in Lightroom 5.3 either. Shift doen't give me that continuous ray of light, just two separate dots.
This doesn't seem to work in Lightroom 4.4 unfortunately.
You have old version of Lightroom
i cant do this in 5.6 . its may be done in lightroom6
Since all the confusion re: Adobe Lightroom staying or leaving, have you seen the sun rays effect in Luminar? All the trouble that you just went thru is unnecessary. It's the epitome of awesome.
I had a similar problem with only Brush A giving me a Pin, and Brush B nothing. I also couldn't Shift+click to make the lightrays connect to where I was trying to put the B brush. BUT I FOUND A FIX - Go up to "Effect" at the top of the menu, click on the Triangle, select Custom. Then go back down to the brushes again. Do everyuthing the same as before and it works. Just ignore the fact that Brush B won't have a Pin. When you Shift+Click the area where you want Brush B to go, the lightray appears. Whew!
This doesnt wort in LR 5 :/
not work !!! how make ??????
Awesome! Thank you!!!
