    As a kid I used to have a big blob of mercury from a broken thermostat that I played with and people worried about that. Now we're full of plastic. Go figure!

    Ironically, the best place for those plastics to be "banished" permanently is the bottom of the sea...
    -> More specifically the subduction zones that will eventually send them into the mantle (to be decomposed by heat as simple carbon & hydrogen molecules like methane).

      @@davidrosner6267 Transport? -> I assume you mean after "collecting" them from the garbage patch, adding a cheap "gel" (so it can be compressed into air-free, almost pure solid "plastic cubes"); then moved by ship to a NEARBY SUBDUCTION ZONE (Marianas Trench is not the closest); then "dropped" so gravity & time does the rest.

      @@talonjuel9486 If it was that easy and cheap, we would discard our garbage that way. It'd be cheaper to restore every piece of garbage into edible food and useful products than to drag them into the marianas trench (and make sure they get swallowed in) Why? For once: Pressure.

    We need to fund research and development of biodegradable synthetic fibers for clothing and put pressure on the textile industry to stop using current synthetic fibers until alternatives are found. I urge everyone to avoid buying new clothes made from current synthetic fibers if they are able to.

    This is so hard to watch. 🥺 what have we done! I can’t believe that all those companies that have made plastic don’t care where it ends and that is going to kill us. I look all around me and plastic is everywhere. I’m trying my best to change my lifestyle but it seems almost impossible. I’m not quitting!

      Stop eating from the hotel and try to cook at the home.
      Keep distance from Alcohal , soft drinks and artificial juice (these all drinks come in plastics bottles) so automatically you are fighting against Plastic.
      3: Make a homemade clothes beg and whenever you go to the supermarket so take that clothes homemade beg with you.
      It's safe and reusable.

    Dr Shanna Swan has been researching this for over 20 years. She's found that chemicals like Ethenals and Bisphenol A & S have been found to effect Hormones, which may explain low fertility rates. On the plus side though, she's foubd that plastic doesn't stay in the body for long around 4-6 hours.
    She's published a detailed video in the youtube channel 'After Skool'.

      well, yes but that would only stop the release of microfibres into the pipes. When you clean out the filter and toss it in the bin its still eventually going to end up in the ocean or anywhere really.

    These microplastic have been found in the gut of sea creatures at the bottom of the ocean. It goes all the up the food chain. It's most probably in the food you ate today. 😔

      Dr Shanna Swan has been researching this for over 20 years. She's found that chemicals like Ethenals and Bisphenol A & S have been found to effect Hormones, which may explain low fertility rates. On the plus side though, she's foubd that plastic doesn't stay in the body for long around 4-6 hours.
      She's published a detailed video in the youtube channel 'After Skool'.

    also, what about syringes made out if plastic, couldn't the plunger grind against the wall of the syringe and kinda " shred it" and release micro plastics into the bloodstream

    Am I missing something? If I can see those micro plastics on the penny, why can’t you see them in your bottled water even on a bright sunny day? Are they even smaller?

      first, most plastics are transparent
      second, i believe this video is talking about nanoplastics in water which are MUCH smaller than micro plastics and are invisible to the naked eye

      That's just a stock image showing Small pieces of plastic not actual microplastics. You literally cannot see those without a microscope.

      It can have some effect, but the main cause for cancer is the modern diet (too much meat) combined with a lot of man made materials that are polluting the environment (like pesticides, fossil fuels, etc)

    Stop making plastic junk. My mom hated plastic. No plastic toys. But I need the 100 piece grocery set. I suffered. She said they were dirty.
    Half the plastic has been made in last 15 years. USA is the biggest piggie per capital.

    Plastic is collected like medical waste and recycled at my house. Most countries throw plastic on the ground and have no recycling program. This is were your floating garbage is coming from. We can do better but the bigger improvement would be to help other countries start recycling.

      also worth pointing that on an individual level individuals living in asia produce 8x less plastic waste than the average american.
      Also, you're only talking about river conducted ocean plastics. Western countries such as America produce waaay more plastic which doesn't help anyone. Don't play the blame game alright? It's everyone's problem.

      Yes, overpopulation is a problem however it is mainly the corporations' fault. They intend to place the blame on the consumer through 'greenwashing'. But it is the responsibility of the manufacturer.
