Just checked out mine and it seems on mine the bolster has about 0,5mm allowance in there. If I put some real force on the handle it seems to have about 0.2mm allowance but I don't think I could call mine lose. The F1 pro hasnt got this issue. I'll recieve another A1 pro today to sharpen for someone. I'll check it to see if it has some allowance as well.
+Dutch Bushcraft Knives i had an A1 Pro that had a small gap in the bolster to the blade. I dont know if it was loose, i didnt used it and sent it back because of the fitting of the fingerguard (bolster) . I truly belive it is an amazing knife, i love my regular A1's. im sure Fallkniven will adress this, they are great guys.
+Dutch Bushcraft Knives i didn't opt for a replacement at the moment, just got a refund. have my reg A1 fot know... but i have hovering that "buy" button more than once for a new A1 Pro. ;)
just send mine out to sweden today. I asked them how we will know if the replacement doesnt have the same issue. They didn't answer to that. I've held 2 a1 pro's and they both had this problem. Had my hands on a S1 pro last weekend. The S1 pro and F1pro don't have this problem. Hope it's just a batch of A1 pro's. I don't think the play effects the performance but it just feels cheap and shouldn't be there on a premium knife. Btw. did you receive my PM with link? cheers
Went for an S1X. Relatively unbreakable handle. The CoS laminated steel is very impressive. Suitable for hard use but also gets and stays real sharp. Would trust my life to the X series.
Be that as it may if your life really depended on the knife this wobble (unacceptable as it is) would luckily not affect the knifes performance. Mine has not developed this in the 3 years I have had it though.
+Big Brown I'll bet it is! But I must say this is a disaster for the pro model when you look at how well the A1's have held up over the years. Only flaw I've come across is some that have the kraton finger guard broken off, but not many cases of that and people that have done this did it by smacking the guard against the wood they batoned in a way that never should be done when you baton. When there are 3 other cases in this comment field in a vid with 130 views there is a problem. For the price people pay for this knife it just should not happen, to any of them. Fällkniven should seriously consider calling all off the knives back and go back to the drawbord with the pro. That's how dissapointing I think this really is. The word embarrassing comes to mind.
I have just noticed this issue (loose hilt/finger guard) on my new and unused F1 Pro. It isn't "loose" like rattling loose, but the movement is there and frankly it bugs me. I know I'm probably being pedantic, but it still isn't very good for a > £250ish knife. I purchased the knife from a local shop, it could have been in the display a while and as such an example from the first run. Other than this issue, and without using it in anger, I love it. I have the original F1 and it is still going strong, but compared to the Pro it feels less refined. I emailed FK last Friday so waiting for a reply. Can anyone here confirm that the fix involves welding the guard to the tang and not just filling the gaps with bodge? In all honestly I'm surprised that it wasn't pinned, peened and soldered in the first place.
That sucks, I totally feel for ya. I have no doubt Fallkniven will take care of it. I do admit though that I get a bit apprehensive when companies do things mostly for aesthetics and guards, especially separate bolstered guards, are, IMO, a needless feature that is introducing just another piece to fail or become problematic just for looks. One of the bonuses to their Thermoron handle is that its simple and comfortable and they seem to have mastered the fit and attachment. Something Cold Steel still has issues with their equivalent handles. One of my favorite knives is a Scrapyard 711, a Bussekin knife from their lowest end. Its a pure function knife with a similar type handle made from ResC but with an ugly coated blade of SR101(52100 carbon) at just over 7" and .25" thick its near indestructable. I had to redo the edge bevel as they like to make their edges ridiculously broad, so I knocked the shoulders off convexing it. That is what I like about Fallkniven, they have very nice grinds. What Fallkniven should do is add an option for their handles with one being a bit fatter for bare hand use or guys with bigger hands as that is about the only spot I see folks having issues with.
New knife still holding up? I just ordered one of these but then read about these issues and got cold feet. I asked about it in a swedish knife group and as chance would have it Erik Hjortberger of Fällkniven was in that group. He confirmed this issue but also said that these problems limited to a total of 6 knives, all from the first batch. I have no idea if its true but seems kind of a long shot that half of the defective ones belong to DBK and yourself. I lost confidence in Fällkniven a couple of years ago when I had some issues with a similiarly priced folder, the PXLim and I promised myself I would not buy another product from them, but it seems this is and the Benchmade Arvensis are pretty much the only knives on the market that fills certain criterias that I wanted. I still might go with the latter to be honest.
@@richardlouis4412 The A1pro is still going strong and left me wanting to for nothing but I still want that arvensis for whatever reason. I just need to find a way to convince myself I need yet another knife lol
I've used my new A1.. not a pro, though.. but I've used my A1 once.. and I also have a little shaking going on it sounds like, about an inch down the handle. A little play as well.. same thing you think? Im just wondering if it's still usable
If I hold the bottom of the tang, the knife doesn't shake. If I hold it about an inch down on the handle, from the start of the blade, it shakes. I'm hoping it's just the opening of the handle that has just stretched out a little.
I developed a similar issue with my Trailmaster. The handle loosened while batoning. Maybe it's an issue with this type of rubber epoxied to tang handle? Also, the Trailmaster's texture smooths out over time, which leaves a fairly slippery surface. You can create texture, but maybe this handle design/material is just vulnerable to heavy use.
Please let us know if this was just an individual knife issue or whether the A1 Pro has a design flaw or QC issue. So far my own A1 Pro has been perfect, but I want to make sure I don't break it so if there is something I could do to prevent a problem I would like to know about it. Thank you!
i have the same problem on my A1 pro and as @Dutch Bruscraft Knives, it has 0.5mm allowance which i find quite annoying especially when placing the thumb over. It breaks the continuity line handle/guard and make some hot spots on the long run. My F1 PRO has not that issue so far. Is it just us or is there a real QC problem here? I am rather disappointed with Fallkniven and their PRO series so far. [edit] Contacted my official Fallkniven vendor whom forwarded my email to Fallkniven Sweden. They confirm the knife has a lifetime warranty and asked me to ship it directly to them.
tolerance issue at this price would piss me off! I currently own limited F1 3g, A1, A2, PXL White, U2x2, was looking at the new A1 and F1 pro but will pause for thought.
hm. interesting vid, thx for uploading. i really dont wanna talk bad about the quality of fällkniven, they are my favourite full-tang knives. but it seems the new "pro"-series has to be tested yet, because of that metal finger guard and the new steel, to see if all holds up really hard use. someone should need to do a destruction test like the one guy once with the a1. before that, i wouldnt trust this knife completely and stick to the older version. just my opinion. does fällkniven still has those charts where u can see at what angle the blade can be bent before breakage? would be very interesting for the pro series.
its a stronger blade but the guard gets loose due to the design choices on how they attached it. the knife isn't going to break its just that the guard will go loose and its just annoying
+nonstopbg It's similar to vg10, I have gotten no chips through normal use. If you start batoning into the ground with a screaming sharp edge I'm sure it would behave like vg10.
As a rule man, look at the the composition of any steel. If you have high carbon and high chromium at high hardness it's generally not going to be a tough steel conversely, low carbon, low alloy will be tougher but just won't hold a cutting edge as long. Carbon Tool steels are the best compromise. Especially the pm stuff for knives since we want more hardness, strength and wear resistance. Go check out some 3v steel knives, I noticed the edge would ripple when abused rather then roll or chip I think why I personally don't care is because no matter how the edge fails it still needs to be sharpened so I'd rather have more strength then ductility since they counter act each other. I also love the Fallkniven design for its use and comfort. The steel is very responsive to my waterstones. And seems to hold a highly polished edge great which is my preference.
I have the A1 Pro, and it has absolutely no play whatsoever as far as I can tell. I haven't used it too much as of yet, so hopefully it stays that way.
In your opinion, this new line of Pro Fallkniven is really excellent as the company says? is a knife which can entrust my life? The choice of steel What is great? Let me know what you think, thanks to Michael.
Long story short, Yes They fixed the guard issue. The steel is also the most high performance material I've used for a knife. In expert hands, the performance is unreal. Fast sharpening, great edge holding, stainless. My favorite knife so far. Professional Survival.

That's the problem with knives that have metal guard and handle that was made of softer material than metal because that metal will grind on that plasticky thermorun handle and eventually under have use will bend that plastic material, best solution will be to make that finger guard integral with the blade, take one piece off metal and cnc machine handle ,but offcourse that will bring price off a knife more. A1 is an amazing knife indeed. I hope they'll replace yours, because I don't see how they'll repair it. The Kraton part of the handle needs to be removed.
+Big Brown i also got a chance to look at my friends well used F1 today which doesn't have any issue at all. his knife is 1mm wider/deeper and about 10 grams heavier than mine. could be the reason for the loose fittings.
Just so everyone knows, Fallkniven recognized the fault and corrected it with welding between the blade and bolster. This looseness issue has been resolved for some time now.
