- Bomber Task Force season is upon us once more. This detachment again brings four B-52s from the 23rd Bomber Squadron at Minot AFB into RAF Fairford, where they will train will fellow NATO allies to improve interoperability. Plenty of noise & smoke all around for todays arrival day, I forgot how loud these are when up close!!

I was a weapons loader on B-52G’s while I was stationed at Anderson AFB Guam back in 86-87. I love those babies.
I'm completely wowed by the fact that B-52's were designed more than 70 years ago and still look contemporary... And impressive...
@@myusername630 Thanks for the explanation, I guess Wikipedia was wrong then...
@@jeromewagschal9485 oh no, that's okay I was happy to clear that up. Not many of us first timers around anymore so I am sure stories will change over the years. SAC days came and went but the World will never know how important that strange machine saved the earth.
@@myusername630 👍👍
I did see on another YT channel that when the B52 was first though of the last US civil war soldier was still alive, and the future pilots of these aircraft haven't been born yet.
I bet they are shit to work on
I’d go ahead and say this is without a doubt the scariest aircraft ever built. It’s whistle is arguably more terrifying than the stuka’s Jericho sirens.
This plane should be on the greatest inventions of all times list.
No.
Avro vulcan scariest sound,
Scariest was the handley page victor
@jonathan simmons how about the F84 thunder screech?
Because if you’re on the wrong end and hear the whistle …. You’re off this planet RIP 🪦
When the reengine program starts that noise will be gone
Love the sound of those 8 engines on this bomber. Their sound is unique and iconic

What a beautiful aircraft! I teared up twice they move me so much. Yes I'm a sap. What an honor to be its crew! Thanks for upload
Most welcome 😎
I agree. I've never understood its nickname of "BUFF (Big Ugly Fat F**ker)."
It's weird how humans can put that in the air huh lol. Seems like it shouldn't be able to fly at all
Look at that slick landing. What a pilot.
Thanks (;
Been loads of military drills at Southampton airport too.
When the military get involved at civilian airports we ought to be concerned
Agree, somethings up....
They do this all the time. When I see strange looking officials inspecting schools or hospitals for hell knows what, or increased military activities on the street, in the context of spiraling international tensions then we will worry.

What a sobering thought. I’m almost 62 years of age, and these Boeing B-52 Bombers are actually OLDER than I am. They were flying before I was born - and will be doing so long after I shove this mortal coil. Sobering thought indeed.
Maybe so, but you still have less "exhaust" than they !

The B-52 has always been one of my favorite planes it's always been a badass then and it still is now
And I for one feel relieved that these beasts are here
Love it. I was at RAF Fairford with the 2nd Bomb Wing on a month-long deployment in 1995. It was the best month of my active duty enlistment. I still have fond memories of the Kotswolds and the Malboro Arms downtown.
Three of these were based at Fairford during the first Gulf War and they used to fly right over my house at Faringdon, which was on the approach flightpath. It was strange to think that they were returning from actual bombing missons, and we used to run outside to wave at the pilots. They were so low we could see the nose art on one of these, which was, "The Grim Reaper".
I was at Fairford in 1980 on TDY to support getting the base re-generated. I don't have too many memories of working during that time but sure do remember the local girls. :)
I was stationed at Fairford 1/81 to 7/82. They were still updating the base & I was just a SRA yet had the choice to live off base with uncle Sam footing the bill....best 18 months of my life
I live within spitting distance of Barksdale AFB and this is a recurring scene every afternoon. Their immense size in the local sky is truly awe inspiring.
Those aircraft are as old as I am, and I flew on them in the 80s, some of these in this video included. I love that aircraft, and miss that sound.
Thanks gunney best of the best
I was at RAF Marham in the early 70s and they used to fly in for bombing competitions. I was just out of training and could hardly believe the amount of flex of the wingtips when taking off!
You might have seen this very one!
Each of these aircraft is 60 years old and still looks awesome.
and Vulcan crews would piss all over them............
@@buzzinbritain8222 Nah...they were just louder, that's all. What exactly did the Vulcan ever do in combat besides get lucky, and land a single bomb on the Falklands Island runway? Not much. The B-52 on the other hand was, and still is, a legend in every respect. Those Vulcans sure were loud though, that is until they were scrapped.

Damn straight up and I'm a dem
The BUFF may be just 100 odd tons of aluminium, but it is beautiful in its own way. If nothing else, beautiful for representing Freedom and Democracy for over half a century.
You mean war mongering/subjugation by fear right? You think America had any business being in Vietnam or care in the matter if it wasn't for the opium the gov wanted ? How about Afghanistan? Korea? All of the above.
I remember being 14 years old and riding in my mom's car on the highway just outside Fairchild Air Force Base west of Spokane and watching a B-52 fly overhead on its approach, 1977, unforgetable.
In the 50s, when I was a kid, those bombers flew over our cotton field, many times. We lived about 65 miles from a SAC base at Abilene, Texas. They flew very long and dropped aluminum spaghetti. It would get mixed up in our cotton when we harvested.
What is aluminum spaghetti
@@michaelsimpson2928 Property training bombs. At least that's what I think it is.
@@michaelsimpson2928 strips of aluminum, it was used to confuse radar, we were told.
It’s referred to as chaff and it is used to “confuse” radar.
Probably the same ones...they are OLD,but upgraded!
The B-36/B-47/B-58 were all a bust but this amazing A/C that entered service in 1955 is still flying. Quite an amazing accomplishment.
The B-47 was a bust? Over 2,000 were produced, and were flying for thirty years. How is that a bust?
B58 really isn't a bust but it wasn't really succesfull. Neither was the b36
It never ceases to amaze me the the BUFFs land and take off with barely a nod to rotation: the tiniest flare, if any, on landing, and a barely perceptible rotation on take off.
@@myusername630 I think we all know that - and you are right it does look odd with the gear pointing to one side on a cross wind landing. FYI regarding the engines it is the RR F130 engine (already in use on the E-11A and C-37) and part of the reason for their selection is that they will use eight of them per aircraft, two per pylon, as direct replacement for the TF33. That simplifies ground clearance, throttle control issues etc.
When the fusalage is horizontal the wings are inherently flared.
A BUFF climbs by virtue of curvature of the earth’s surface.
Really? I read the B52 has to have 8 because the rudder/fin cannot compensate for the asymmetry of a whole lost engine in a 4.
@@brianwillson9567 Almost. My father and son who both flew these planes stated quite emphatically that the plane does not so much take off as it scares the earth out from under it. 😊
This shows exactly one thing I, for one, love about the old "PnW JT,s"; You COULD SEE THE power changes on the ground, before you HEARD the changes; I.E, SMOKE, BABY!
Ahh, the good ole days!🥴
1:33 really puts in perspective how massive the wingspan is vs the length. Absolutely gargantuan wings
Me and a friend at the age of about 11 at an airshow on Homestead AFB in fl (1969) managed to walk onto one with no escorts, alone and it was truly awe inspiring. "Huge" all I can say!
The B-52 is one the most beautiful aeroplane's to grace the skies.
While it's an impressive airplane and certainly a novelty for planespotters - I, for one, am rather unsettled by their arrival.
You should be reassured. Remember the saying - speak softly and carry a big stick. The B52’s a big stick.
@中国的主人 Uhhhh. They don't carry nukes anymore. Ever since START and START 2 treaties that Reagan entered into.
You're certainly not alone sir!
@@williamtsmith9668
Well, I hope they can carry nukes if they have to! It’s the only thing that’s going to stop WW3.
my son and i were fishing on a lake behind fairford when these came in quite a sight and then did engine tests in the early hours of sunday morning it was noisy to say the least, we wondered why there was so many people on the road outside the base when we drove past on Saturday now i know
Was stationed at Eglin AFB and saw these take off and land..it is an amazing aircraft.
Dad would me and my brothers and park on the road that paralleled the runway at Carswell Air Force Base. We would watch these behemoths land. Always loved it when the parachutes deployed to slow it down.
Absolutely loud and majestic sight of the 4 x B-52H Stratofortress and incredible video !! 🤩😎👍
Brilliant sound of 8 jets throttling up and down!! This should give me something else to watch out for in the skies of Gloucestershire!!
Growing up in San Antonio has made me very very accustomed to seeing all sorts of military aircraft in my 49 years. The scream of these large-body jets like C5 engines were a regular, every-day thing.
Had the surround sound turned on for the headset and was actually deafening. Nice vid!
You are brave 😅
The boys have arrived! 👌
In the 1990s I was at a facility in NM when these bird came in doing touch and gos with a high cross wind to the runway. Totally fascinating to watch
This is the utmost beauty of the until now history of the airforces.
I grew up near a SAC B52 base back in the cold war days. Those things scared the hell out of me, flying in and out. Thankfully we have a bit less nuclear tension now. These planes are still pretty intimidating just to see in flight
I live under the flight path they used coming out of March AFB in Edgemont CA. I still remember at about 3:30 AM as the full ready Alert squadron Blasted out overhead one after another. My dad turned on the Radio to see if there was an Emergency Alert Broad cast going...Just a drill??? They never did that again while we live there.
If you live in a country that doesn't have Democracy yet, seeing one of those planes isn't usually a good sign.
Fabulous vid thank you. I noticed a few posts on social media about this. But then im thinking its quite normal for these to visit here on rotation.
Yes, usually twice a year
Amazing that the US can keep these going and yet we've seen the V-force come and go and also the Hunter,Lightning,Phantom,Buccaneer,Jaguar,Tornado, and Harrier disappear.
The v bombers where abandoned by our government. When they where in their limited service and the government cared about stratetic nuke bombers they where well maintained and upgraded. The vulcan was by far the most advanced of its time dare i say ahead of its time. But once the government stopped funding they quickly went into disrepair. The government lacked the foresight the americans had.
@@ashleygoggs5679 That was basically my point, that we didn't do enough.
They probably keep them flying because it’s cheaper than building a new one.

@@myusername630 I was offset around 120-150m away from the aircraft itself, and even then for a few seconds it had this crazy loud, almost unpleasant shrill. I can't even begin to imagine the damage which could be done if anyone happened to stand underneath one with no protection
Its very interesting to read your comments!
@@myusername630 I was stationed at Bergstrom AFB in Texas in 1966/68 and for the first 6 months, before RF4Cs arrived and the Buffs and KC-135s left for Minot and Okinawa, there were about 25 Buffs and ten KC-135s stationed there. I was in POL and refueled so many of the Buffs which took about 2 hours to accomplish for a full war load. That was back when they still had the turbojet engines, talk about loud and smokey! Once, we had a surprise ORI inspection and had to launch 10 of them and five KC-135s, IIRC, within15 minutes. That was the most awesome display of sight, sound, smoke and coordination I'd ever witnessed up to that point in life.😍
Probably the safest feeling plane I’ve ever flown in. Your facing the tail and your on the top floor. We did drop a few thousand feet in a minute though.

There were two here on March 2nd. I was watching the comings and goings at Mildenhall when the twitchers started to get excited. Two B52s overflew right above quite low. One went on to do an overfly of Cambridge at 1800ft according to the tracking app. That was the first and only time I’ve seen one. I reckon the aircrews had a lovely sightseeing flight round the country. A couple of days later they headed off toward Germany.
Yep, they were in Germany at Grafenwöhr for low level flights, a place that is maybe 50km away from me. And I didn't know that they come to Graf. So I missed them... ☹️
I heard a day later or so that they were here and saw some videos on RUclips... 😭
Saw an airwing of SAC take off of from Fort Worth in 1982 I was teeing off on a golf course directly below the flight path iI was deaf for a week
If I saw that thing coming to get me, I would run and hide, but there's nowhere to hide from it - so be very afraid adversaries! I love that phrase: "Diplomacy by other means"!

Good video .. 1:05 it was an eye opener to see the bomber carry out a low altitude banking turn, since when civilian pilot Charles “Chuck” Fisher attempted a similar low altitude turn in a B 52 in 1964 the vertical stabilizer sheared off, that Mr Fisher piloted the aircraft for five hours to a successful landing at Blytheville Air Force Base in Arkansas, must be a tribute to his flying skills and the sturdy construction of the aircraft.
Wow, impressive aircraft. One question….. why are landing in the UK? Are they stationed there?
They need to do some low full throttle smokey passes down the English Channel, it might deter the 5000+ illegal invaders a week from crossing !
