I have no absolutely no doubt that your "speculations" are very close to the truth. One of the reasons your people were so successful during their time is because they were so pragmatic. Multi-purposing gear seems to me a no-brainer! Your devotion to authenticity and adherence to period materials is very impressive! Wonderfully shot and edited! Thank you, friendly Norseman!
Hello David. Thank you so much for this kind and positive comment. I am really grateful for that. Thanks for taking the time to watch and write. all the best
Great photos! Living the life. If I'm not mistaken, Vikings are believed to have lowered the mast and passed the sail over it to act as a shelter when the ship was run aground for any time - it would make sense to have done something similar if they were to travel inland any distance (perhaps with smaller sail repair 'patches') or if they were to be based on land for longer periods. Just a thought...taking the sail with you would also stop anyone stealing the boat/ship - unless they were willing to put in a lot of work rowing!
People are the same no matter when or where you are. Most likely the things you thought of were also thought of a thousand years ago. So you may be right. As they say, there's nothing new under the sun. Loved the video. Thank you. 😊
I agree with you completely: whilst this idea is speculative, it would be so obvious that it must have been done. I can imagine a boat pulling up to shore in an unpopulated area, some of the sailors go off in search of food or game, others stay behind to collect wood and start a fire. It seems just too improbable to me that they would all sit there in the rain and not think of using the sail for shelter! 😂 And as others have said, plenty of items would serve multiple purposes. The axe you chop firewood with becomes your raiding weapon. Your cloak is also your blanket. Your knife is your everyday tool, for cutting, carving, cooking, eating, or in a pinch even a backup weapon. You proved that it can be done, which I think proves that it must have been done. Thank you for sharing with us my friend, looks like you had a lot of great adventures there! 😀
thanks for sharing your thoughts with me Ingvar:) And I am happy to hear we think the same on this matter. It sure was some great adventures - and I cant wait to make more. all the best my friend.

Experience shows that every item can have multiple purposes. For example, we often use sails from a boat as a tent or as sun cover. To many more adventures bro.
Great video Rasmus I think the Vikings used there sails for sure they where smart and creative people thats why they came everywhere over the world over sea and land. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for the video, Dear friend, it has a tenderness that touches the heart - Perhaps the only way for me to really know and understand something is through self-study, self- research through introspection and bring the understandings to expression in daily experience - I love your channel💜 Have a great weekend and May life smile at you🌲🙏🌲

Thanks:) yes good times. and a motivation to keep making new ones. They dont come if you dont go after them. Im glad the video felt welcoming to you:) i highly appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching.
My theory is that if one person can think of it, at least another can think of it as well. Who is to say that other wasn't in the Viking Age? I love your videos and they are very good speculations and history. You are awesome my friend.
GREAT investigative video on the possible intricacies of ancient Norse “wild-camping.” Two thoughts jumped out at me after watching the video and reading the comments, one of which was somewhat touched on previously in the comments and one that wasn’t necessarily as yet mentioned. The first thought I had is, even though I quite agree with the notion that a guard force would have been left to guard the ships in a longship traveling scenario, I would also imagine that the main force would have taken the sails with them, not only to improvise shelters, but also to provide means of keeping the lifeblood of long-distance maritime travel, the sails themselves, safe should the ships indeed be attacked. In the worst case scenario, they can rig the sails to commandeered ships. The second thought I had, more related to small ship travel, is if the sail can be improvised to be dual-purpose or multipurpose, why carry two or three or more pieces of gear when one fills all those roles. I’m sure room on a small ship is at a premium and human nature is such that if you could reasonably get away with carrying less, why not do so. There’s a saying that goes, “ounces equals pounds, and pounds equals pain.” On the trail, in possibly a strange and foreign place where you’ll be walking for who knows how long, it doesn’t take people long to accept that, if they can improvise one piece of gear to fill two or more roles to shed a little carrying weight, they’re most likely going to do it.
hello:) first of all thanks for watching the video and for taking the time to write. Its some interesting thoughts and i tent to agree with you. to bring the sail not only for shelter but also a safety meassure seems very plausible to me. Thanks for sharing your perspective. much appreciated. all the best - Rasmus
I always look forward to your videos - i think you are doing a great job at conveying parts of viking live and its always connected with chilling footage of nature. I´d love to see a video about your tattoos!
Thank you for this kind comment. Its much appreciated. I will consider the tattoos for a future video. Although there is not much relevant linking to the vikinge age:) Mostly drawings i made my self (with some personal meaning of course). But I will keep the idea in mind:) thanks
Hi Rasmus, thanks for another great video. I think it is possible that people use a tarp to sleep under, especially with a larger group. As an individual, I think about the weight you have to take with you on your journey, which can slow down your journey. I think you have to look at why and how people travel. Then you also know what people travel with. Sleeping in a forest was a completely different experience back then than it is now, because the worldview, the world experience was very different. Anyway, your video is inspiring
Thank you for your insight and reflections. I know the weight is an important feature. But the bigger the crew the bigger the sail and the heavier the burden. Of course wagons and horses (or even slaves) would have made packing and carrying a lot easier. thanks for watching my friend:)
Thanks - great video - as always. Great to see practical uses of all the gear. I do have a question though - would a viking raid have left someone to watch the boats anchored on the coast - or would they have brought their ship onto shore or at least have hidden it somehow in the brush? Interesting to think about regardless
I feel quite confident that they would have left a guard. the ships were insanely valuable. Thanks for the friendly comment Jim. I appreciate the feedback and that you took the time to watch the video. all the best
@@RAMUNI-Viking Imagine signing up to do the raiding, sailing all that way, and then being told you are to guard the ships - that would be quite disheartening although a valuable addition to have a successful raid - maybe a combination of the oldest/youngest of the party.

Fine food and friendship is everything. Great video my friend! I'm very interested in the construction of the packboard for carrying the sail. I enjoy making my own gear. I noticed that you had some form of ice cleats on your boots? I'd be interested in learning more about them too! Skal from Vineland!
Indeed it is:) the packframe is a simple H shape with a double center bar. I only really used it once. No evidence form viking age. Slightly inspired my ótzi's backpack form the iceage. It works great but unless I am in for really long hike i prefer to have the bedroll on the shoulder. I will try and feature the frame in a future video. There is several finds of icecleats from the viking age. I have a very short 1 min video about them on the channel. and they are featured in one of my winter videos. They work great for muddy grass, ice and snow, and even sand dunes. Skål my friend
Thr only Archeological evidence of a tent is the oseberg tent, found in the Norwegian oseberg ship. But like you indicate, that a Square sail makes a square tarp shelter, and i have seen some pictures where they have used the sail as a tarp of the ship awning between the railings with the horisontal mast as a ridgeline.
Another great video brother ..as resently as the early 1700s pirates were though to have done the same with sails ..to simply get out of the rain or have some shade..there in no evidence but ... I would think the chances of finding a sail made from organic materials.. after 300 years wouldn't b very good ...add another 1000 or so years ..even less likely...and I am all about having things proven by artifact finds ...but sometimes u just gotta say ...yeah they probably did .
thats interesting with the pirates. and yes you are right. some finds are next to impossible to achieve. I think the experimental reenactment or experimental archaeology is interesting as long as there is some thinking behind it:) thanks for this comments and for taking the time to watch the video.
seems extremely likely it would have been done this way. have seen examples from other cultures that done it as well. great vid by the way no unnecessary talking.

Great friends, fine food and the mother of all….Mother Nature, I believe that the sailors of old were very intelligent so your critical thinking is much more probable than sheer speculation.
Yes and no - this is a "modern" linen fabric that comes with some impregnation. When it wears off I will see how much it needs. Most tightwoven natural fabrics will leak a little untill the fibers are saturated. Then they swell up and becomes almost waterproof. But I have rubbed beeswax in all seams with simple friction heat to seal them and protect the thread. I am considering doing that all over. I know animal fat can be used - but I store this tarp inside my modern home, and I have a smell concern:)
Am saying nothing I been using an old sail for years as part of my sleeping system. As am fed up with being told you have to use the so called viking tent every one uses 😂 I have goat skins to lie on a sheap skin and two nice wool blankets as covers.

People back in time weren't lacking in common sense. Why leave a sail behind, when it can serve as shelter ? My friends and I have camped out in the winter using only period wool clothing, wool blankets and a sail type shelter in anywhere from minus 20 deg C to minus 40 deg C. Although the coldest temp. did not make for the most comfortable of nights, the worst enemy was the wind. If you can get out of the wind, you wil be much much better off, and that is where a sail can be worth carrying
