    If I remember correctly, the Gepard gunner did not often use the gunsight that much. One could designate the target on the screen and then the computer did the rest. Also, that seems to be quite amusing, as I have been told because being in the turret was like a wild ride when the tank's turret followed and gunned the assigned targets. The optics were used as a backup and against ground targets more often.

      Yes, you have targets on the radar and a laser range finder. Once you select that target the Gepards shoots automatically, it is of course able to fire manually.

    Just watched the "guns only" part so far, and although I don't think it would change the outcome I think your tactics in the A-10 are making it much easier for the Gepard! When you're transitioning from the orbit to the attack run you're just absolutely defenceless and the angle from the Gepard is just coming to a nice gradual and predictable stop. I don't think it could ask for better circumstances!

    Hey Cap, got an idea for a carrier strike group battle/naval battle. Here is the premise: Chinese naval strike group/could be carrier strike group attempting control of australian airspace (carrier would most likely have been put out of action by the time they get to Australia). The RAAF has 2 operational squadrons of F-35A lightning with 50 aircraft between them, 1 24 aircraft squadron of super hornets, 12 P8 posidens (not sure how you could model those), E-7 wedgetail AWACS, and one squadron of 12 EA-18G Growlers. They alse have an EWR with a range of between 1000-3000 km. The Australian navy could also get involved with HMS Duncan representing the Hobart class destroyers. The chinese would most likely approach form the west. Would be happy to explain in more detail if interested :)

      A Chinese strike against Australia would likely come from the North East from their planned base in the Solomon's. Indonesia isn't going to let China move through their waters and any attempt to move around Indonesia is going to run into Singapore and Australia's other allies in SE Asia.
      Assuming China gets a strike group through the First Island Chain undetected, they would move east around the JORN detection area to the Solomon's, then southwards towards Brisbane or Sydney.
      They might be able to avoid detection by JORN, but they would likely be under watch from Pine Gap the entire time.

    The only problem with this is if the Gepard is _hiding_ from aerial threats it can't do its job.
    The Warthog can just orbit out of range and pick off easier targets of opportunity it encounters. Not sure the divisional commander would be too happy if all his vehicles get wiped out...but the SPAAGs are fine.

    • @joenight9693
      @joenight9693 2 года назад +6

      German Veteran here. The Gepard is a close-in AA System. Meaning, it's supposed to keep your immediate overhead air clear. It's designed to destroy AT Helicopters and CAS planes going after your Artillery, your logistics and other chewy stuff like that. Plus it is designed to work in Tandem with the Roland AA Missle System. So loitering outside the imediate Gepard Bubble is no option, since the Roland would just send you a nice little present up there. Plus it stands to reason, that someone either through AWACS or the simple fact, that everyone and their mom can hear the darn A-10, would ask for a EF Typhoon to kindly move it's arse over and blast the sucker up there.
      Especially since the whole darn front segment should be on EMCON anyways and you'd have to go active sensors to find anything to start with. I've lived in the greater Ramstein Area far to long to know that you can hear an A-10 from Miles away. You will know it's there. There is no way to hide it.
      Both systems (GEPARD and ROLAND) are purely defensive in nature, like almost all Bundeswehr Systems from that time are. They're designed to lie in wait and ambush soviet attackers. Considering, that almost everything behind the direct frontline will duck and hide, just to avoid being spotted from FOB's and AT Helicopters, it's fair to assume that the Gepard would not invite desaster, by doing something completely different than anybody else does.
      The German doctrine is mostly defensive in nature. Meaning, that each segment of the frontline will try to setup for defense in depth and not attack. As it was deemed almost certain, that the soviets/russians would posses way more shit than we do. So the idea was to wait, hit them where it hurts, run like hell, rince and repeat. More or less like the Ukrainians are doing right now.
      If you take a look on how even a simple MANPADS can ruin a KA-52's day, you can certainly imagine what a Gepard could do. ;-)
      But hey the whole contest was kinda daft anyways, since these systems have never been designed to compete in the first place. Gepard was designed with russian adversaries in mind, while being on the defensive. And A-10 is a bird designed for providing CAS to attacking allied tanks and mechanized infantry. Both are NATO Systems which are designed to rather fight side by side and not against each other.

  • @Valorius
    @Valorius Год назад

    The GAU-8 was specifically chosen, and the A-10 specifically designed, to be able to engage, fire, and hit a ZSU-23/4, while having a tight enough turn radius to turn away before the ZSU-23/4 could return fire.

    Doctrine in the German Air Defence units was not to use the search radar. The air picture was delivered by either AWACS or a central air surveillance radar out of range of enemy artillery fire. What most people don‘t know that the Gepard has a very sophisticated optical aiming system as well. Commander and gunner can spot individually! I don‘t know how Ukraine will get the air picture and how they intent to use the Gepard to avoid making him a prey for Russian artillery.

      They could use it to protect critical locations from russian cruise missiles with it, as they repeatedly attacked armor and ammo depots that way. The Gepard does really well against small slow flying targets like cruise missiles and (military) drones.

    The gun on the a 10 reminds me of the siren on the Stuka. In that it's s a real crowd pleaser. However in combat against a well equipped enemy, and without total air superiority best not to use it If you want to live. Still a really cool plane. As is the Stuka also.

      The gun isnt the primary weapon for the hog, it hasnt been for like 20 years now... it is still a great back up for an exhausted payload when you need to loiter while still maintaining fire superiority.
      This wouldnt be a video had they not neutered the a10; orbit until locked with targeting pod then its just pick your poison, agm, bombs, even guns... the biggest issues for the boys was simply maintaining visual contact on the gepard and getting rounds on target.

    My understanding was the Gepard is primarily for an anti-helicopter close air defense role for armor units.
    Originally the Germans were going to mount 30mm, but instead went to 35mm (according to wiki)... either of these rounds are going to hurt most aerial targets at 2500m.
    Perhaps you could try the ZSU-23-4 (quad 23mm) in a similar scenario, for funs?

    • @Mrterminus
      @Mrterminus 2 года назад +1

      Originally it was meant as an anti aircraft weapon system. But by the time it was ready for service it wasn’t able to do keep up with current airplanes. It was pushed into an anti helicopter role which was also pretty short lived since ATGM technology was already outranging its gun. So they opted to use FAPDS ammo as their de facto standard ammunition, since the ballistic properties were vastly superior.

    This needs to be reflown. Don't be so aggressive in the A-10, like don't do a "chicken" run with the SPAA at best you will both die. Locate him first, then find a good attack angle. Getting tunnel vision is death for the A-10, you must not be flying towards the bullets for as long as it takes the bullets to get to where you are. Use time of flight and the A-10 much superior mobility to win, do multiple runs, use range. Think of it like the MAR of a missile fight, bullets must travel a few seconds if you have range, so you can be out of the way when the bullets strike where you were.

    Do you have ammo limit on the A-10? If so....triggering like you were doing in short bursts is pretty bad on ammo management because the gun takes a bit to spin down after firing. It stops firing when you let off the trigger but as it is braking it's shucking rounds out of then back into the belt...counts how many unfired there were then backs up to where they start to save ammo. Quick triggering ends up with the belt mixed with lots of live rounds which was one of the challenges when making the reloading machine having to deal with empties and loaded rounds. You might be shorting yourself of hundreds of rounds left in the belt.

    • @No1sonuk
      @No1sonuk 2 года назад

      It's a very quick spinup and down. Also, as far as I'm aware, the gun has no firing pin cutoff, meaning if the round goes through the gun, it fires.
      It might stop rounds feeding in at the end of the burst, though.

      @@No1sonuk The 7.62 Minigun IS mechanical firing so you really don't want to be turning the barrels by hand on the ground. The A-10 is electrically fired so that can be instantly stopped while the ton of barrels spinning mechanically does feed more until it stops.
      I had a working acquaintance with a company in Florida that made the reloading rig....and dealing with spent and live rounds intermixed in the belt was a real challenge to overcome.

    A-10’s use a maneuver called a bump up, use this and you can defeat the AA gun. Aquire the gun outside of its range first of course. Then run in low level 50-100ft agl from a direction he doesn’t expect bump up roll 3/4 inverted and engage him with your gun.

    will make our King of the hill missions more fun
    if only ED could remove the slow areas on the Caucasus map
    and also why can one drive through bushes out in the open on the Syria map but those close to buildings are solid
    also.... Mariana's map is still utterly horrible for CA

    Getting creative. If you are doing "Air" vs "Anti-Air" in it's compatible form, I'd like to see a tse-tse Mosquito with a 57mm "6 pounder" attack an .88 battery, wouldn't you? All the world wonders. Although, the ZSU-23, mmm, there's a monster. Wonder what you could get to attack that? Something sexy, I bet. Cheers you irreverent muggles!

    I think what we might be seeing the in the Russian war on the Ukrainians is the benefit of small drones. In the case of an aircraft trying to attack a ground target, small drones make excellent spotters. A simple laser range finder on a drone could determine the GPS coordinates of a ground target. A high flying bomber or attack craft, far above the range of air defenses could easily and safely drop a GPS guided bomb on those coordinates. There would have to be constant communication between the spotter and the bomber in the case of a mobile target as long at the bomber loiters in the proximity of the ground target.

    • @MPdude237
      @MPdude237 2 года назад

      There is absolutely potential for this but I don’t see this happening for two reasons.
      1. Air defenses. While flying high will keep you out of range of short range AA weapons like MANPADS or guns, it will put you within range of medium to long range AA systems like Buk, Tor, S-200, 300, and 400 can hit targets high up. Both Ukraine and Russia possess potent AA systems which prohibit either side from using aircraft more than sparingly.
      2. Russia has been running out of PGMs, this includes GPS guided bombs. There are few if any PGMs that Russia can spare at the moment and the situation is likely even worse for the Ukrainians given that their aircrafts and accompanying systems are on average inferior to Russian systems.
      Within the context of the current conflict, Ukraine will probably make better use of GPS guided artillery, which could wreak havoc on the Russians if supplied in large enough numbers.

    Just remember rule 357: NEVER, EVER, EVER make a direct attack on AAA unless you can kill it from outside it's effective range. And just for the record: Rule 246, NEVER go around again on a defended target. OH, and Rule 1: all rules are subject to arbitrary change.

      War thunder is a bit cheesy though. I'd probably play it if it wasn't F2P and they made the aircraft handle a little more realistic, they are way too maneuverable and don't really have the weight and inertia like they do in DCS. I also don't like the way you aim, you just put the dot on your target with your mouse and the plane does all the flying for you.
