i’ve surfed/caught waves 12-15ft+ East Coast and 16-18ft plus in Hawaii, where I caught one make at Waimea...the difference in speed and steepness is like twice of tha you’re accustomed. As you know, Island waves usually have a deeper/longer swell period so they’re physically moving faster. East Coast waves of 15-18ft though are no joke, especially if out at a beach break without any channels. I had to get out of the water one day in Hawaii at Sunset Beach as well bc the swell kept getting bigger. Seeing and being out in waves pushing over 20ft faces (8-12ft @ 16 sec) really makes you reevaluate life and what’s important. The speed of the wave works 2 ways, so while more difficult to catch and make the drop, once you’re on the face, you have more speed down the line to use surfing wise. Lastly, the key to big wave survival besides breath and swimming training is having a solid big wave gun, 9’6x20x2 3/4 at least minimum length and thickness...width depends on surfers build and preference with most guns I dont think would be over 23” ...usually guns are 1-1 1/2” wider than standard shortboard, and while a 7’0 will catch a 10ft (20ft face) wave some places, true big wave “spots” really need a 9’0-10ft board with more volume too. Try finding a used semiGun like 6’8-7’0 even for the eastCoast and see how “easy” it makes surfing Hurricane Surf that’s over 10ft faces. it’s definitely a game changer...
the scariest part for me is being caught inside and paddling like crazy as the next monster approaches. When you blast off the curling top to safety as a cliff forms behind you....that's a great feeling.
@@drewfinn2 It depends on the break. I've surfed Bells at 8 foot plus and some of the wide ones actually break off the reef in deep water so the take off was actually not that heavy. Personally I find shallow, hollow waves more scary than big waves that are breaking in deep water. Looking down at a razor sharp Indonesian reef while knowing you are in the developing world is something that will make you think twice about overhead waves.
It’s amazing to see that even the best surfers in the world, wipe out and make mistakes. We often just see the highlights where it seems flawless and perfect. Killin it as always!! ❤️🤙🏽
Awesome to watch mate, it’d be unreal to have a GoPro face forward as well so we can see some of the huge drop in you take. Keep charging and thank you for sharing your surfing 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Amazing....thanks for sharing!!! You transported me there....I was depressed recoverying from a knee injury and might not be able to do my sport (hang gliding) any more....but watching your videos really cheers me up. Blessings from Mexico
The GoPro board Mount POV is amazing yes yes yes yeah... Thanks for sharing!!! I think the board Mount POV from the nose of the board the is actually a better camera angle than the mouth mount but any POV of any kind surfing especially of waves like these is awesome awesome awesome... Happy surfing from VIRGINIA BEACH!!!+++:)))
Yes, that was amazing! I'm glad you gave the time so I didn't have to go looking for it. I love watching all the good surfers, but what is is about Kai? He has a gracefulness that other surfers don't have. A joy to watch.
Holy crap Kai! Thanks for sharing that footage. That's a cool perspective being able to see the wave like that. Gives a better appreciation of that water monster chasing you from behind.
Jesus that's heavy!! Biggest surf of my life was Puerto Rico on a hurricane. 10ft when we paddled out but every set got bigger and bigger, next thing I know I'm the only guy left in the lineup in 25t+ surf and a crowd of people watching on the beach. I was petrified and thankfully was able to ride the shoulder of a huge set into the beach.
Ahhhh so good i want rn ahhh amazing waves gotta keep myself over I always watch amazed riding the heavy waves with heavy music like Delta Parole or with relaxing music videos in background.
I think in general with big wave surfing if there is room on the wave and you are not getting in the way or ruining a critical section for someone else then it is fine to share waves
Great footage Kai, was hoping you and the Hawaii boys would have got some really good ones as well, the swell looked kind of unpredictable, either way great stuff.💯🔥🤙
Yo’ to think I learned it all right there and then watch this only to pucker. Often I wonder if it’s scary looking than it actually is, then I wake up and remember IT’S TERRIFYINGLY beautiful everytime.
Just insane how fast swell picks up at Mavericks, I check Surfline one day, it's generally small, next day it's like 35-50. To imagine surfing these monsters is unreal. Props to Kai.
Big question, how do you detach from your tow in board?? do you just jump out of before you wipe out or does it naturally slide off your feet? Always curious about this one
That has to be the 64k question,🤔 crystal 🤙 must be special Lens cleaning fluid, He is beautiful to watch, he does what I used to fantasize about 40 yr ago 🖐️😊
@@pigdog271 never ever sext on a Go Pro either ! The best for me is Go Pro and fishing from a SUP board or Kayak.I have a bow mount for hunting but a 15 foot shot looks 45. My Go Pro's were all free. I live at a beach surf town and they wash up.
I'm not a surfer, but of course your videos are awesome. Question. How fast are you going on these monster waves? Also, at what point do you have to switch to a board that has footstraps? Peace ✌ ☮
The focus needed for big wave surfing looks so incredibly intense but the stoke released after the ride must be like no other feeling ever!

@The Power Moves so he doesn’t get swept up by all the waves it’s just safety measures
@The Power Moves To avoid the beatings on the paddle back out => higher wave count :)
When the wave cast a shadow over you as you were paddling up the wave I got a shiver down my spine.

Great video. Surfing is cool.

Drastic understatement

Fabulous videos...terrifying massive waves. I cannot even imagine what 'very scary' must mean for us normal humans.
Amazing POV.. suggestion...it would be nice to cut to wide shot for reference on how massive those waves really are. Stay safe out there Kai.

After I eat a burrito I take a nap, Kai paddles into a Maverick monster like a dragon slayer. 🌯🌯🌯
Agree, cool to see the POV then the wide angle to give perspective.
I get where you're coming from, but he's a world class surfer, not a film crew ya know?
Kai makes it look so easy and seems intense and relaxed at the same time. Very impressive.
INSANE!!! Seeing that much water coming at you at that speed and maintaining your cool to surf it - WOW. Thanks for regaling us with the footage!!!

This is so cool. Lovin' the GoPro wave action.

All other surfers right around Kai: "Oh, man, we're too far from the drop for this wave".
Kai: "Hold my beer".
That is some of the best footage I've seen. Unreal.
Absolutely awesome footage...thanks for sharing.
What a crazy dose of awesome footage 👏👏👏. Gracias, please post more.

I’ve seen a few other videos from that weekend this is absolutely incredible to see it from your board’s vantage point. WOW! Much respect 🙏
Me: I want to surf. Also me: scared of small waves
Madness. The go pro makes the wave look way further back than it must be. And how smooth was that ski pick up

Broken front teeth and a major concussion.
