I remember the first time I went to a comic shop and I asked the woman at the counter if she could recomend some batman comics. She handed me year one and I was a bit unsure because she said there was no big Gillian's in it. I bought the book and I must have read it about 3 times that weekend, it was so awesome. Great book to start with
Ultimate Spider-Man was the book that made me fall in love with comics as a kid,and it was amazing because it was the start of a new universe, so you didn’t have to catch up on anything, and you could read it straight through for the most part without having to get too sidetracked with tie-ins. And it’s just one of the best runs ever written in my opinion. The 133 issues might seem like a lot to a new reader, but it’s amazing.
The Long Halloween is also a Batman graphic novel (12 issues) that I think is good for newcomers. It stands on its own, presents some well known batman villains, has a noir vibe.
Why though? The art and layout are absolutely terrible and in no way represent what the comic form is capable of. Sure it deals with “serious” subject matter, but who cares? Who are you trying to impress?

Very nice introduction, thank you. The Books of Magic and Batman: Year One are certainly two of the best comics of all time, and I'm already waiting for Planetary. Superman: Secret Identity would be a good choice to include in a Part 2.
I feel so comfortable watching your videos. Super chill. I have been reading comics since i was a kid and I totally understand why you wouldn’t recommend Alan Moore first. I started reading comics with frank millers batman works. And once I got to reading the killing joke I didn’t understand why everyone loved it so much. Great video! I recently discovered your channel and I've been binge watching all your content. Haha "Nerdventures" is such a clever channel name, I love it! :)
This video really helps. I've been wanting to get into comics for so long but it's just so daunting with the huge amount of choice. Lol. I also don't have a local comic store which sucks. I just read the first 3 volumes of the new 52 Batman and will order these comics you suggested. Thanks.

Gread vid, man! Kudos for including the Akira along! One of my favourites as it introduces a huge number of characters along the way and manages to hold it all together up till the end. Personally I would recommend Hugo Pratt`s Corto Maltese-series for aventure type of story fans and Jacques Tardi`s The Arctic Marauder too as its kind of pre-steampunk-adventure. Maybe also Al Williamson`s classic Star Wars comics.
Great video.Im just getting back into comics and graphic novels as an adult.Loved them as a kid.It is overwhelming knowing where to start or get into. Most of these looked very interesting.

my essentials: All Star Superman, Doom Patrol by Grant Morisson, Storm Watch/Authority by Warren Ellis, Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, JLA by Grant Morrison (start with the first arc, then skip to Rock of Ages!), Daredevil by Ann Nocenti, Preacher, Static (or perhaps Hardware or Icon-- something from Milestone). I think that's a good, well-rounded look at comics and then they can go from there

I read Preacher (Watchmen also as a one off during my years in the wilderness) 10 years after having quit Marvel and comics in general, and it was so much fun it brought me back, agreed on Daniel Clowes I'd suggest nearly anything from him.

I think it depends a lot on age and what you are looking for. I'm a college kid and I always thought comics were cool as a hobby but I didn't think of them as art, so Watchmen was the perfect first for me. I think Ronin, Watchmen, and V for Vendetta are the best to start with for a somewhat well-read adult cuz its legitimate literary awesomeness that says "we are here and we know what we are talking about". When I finished Watchmen and V for Vendetta I was amazed Alan Moore wasn't a household name. They are art just like something the likes of Tom Wolfe or Vonnegut would create. Now if you are younger maybe New Frontier or Scott Pilgrim are better for showing the awesomeness with less of the Alan Moore/Frank Miller depth and baggage you gotta swim around in. If you are a movie fan and after a (super)hero story or the platonic ideal of an American comic book I'd recommend Dark Knight Returns, Spiderman: Blue, or Red Son. Depends on what you are looking for but the ones I've listed are what I'd tell people cuz they all are truly impressive representatives of the genre.
Thanks for this video! I'm always looking for good comic book suggestions. Especially Superhero comics -- I am completely out of my element with those. Yes, Akira for anime fans. Recently read my first superhero comic: The Killing Joke. Already like the Batman movies and that helped my interpretation of the story. The dialogue was maybe the best I'd seen in a graphic novel so far and I was surprised with how literary the art and themes were. SO GOOD. Thanks for the recs!
I have a fringe recommendation: If you are into crime stories and police procedurals, if you are interested in super heroes, but are not completely sold on the concept: Try "Gotham Central" by Brubaker and Rucka with amazing art by Lark. It's an awesome comic book. :)
As someone who is starting to get into comics, this was helpful. Most of these I had on my list to get so this was reassuring. Ill try out the others you mentioned. Is there a Marvel starting point? DC was alot easier to jump into than Marvel unless I am doing it wrong.
To me, DC: The New Frontier is the best starting point for a new comic reader. It's very accessible, but not lacking any depth or scale. Very well written, spans a wide amount of the DCU, and with Darwyn Cooke's best (IMO) art ever.
Great video man. Love your choices and content of books for new readers. I like your choice of Year One Batman for new readers personally. That's a great book to dive into. New sub too. I'm going to go back and check out more of your videos. Keep posting and thanks for sharing. Cheers,
Great suggestions, would you suggest me any series or oneshot issue, i loved Y THE LAST MAN. So something similar or great story telling like Y the last man if you can recommend :)
I wonder if Marvel will reprint the Iron Fist Omni since the show is coming out, and Marvel tends to publish based on hype. I have these in the premier HCs. I really want that Omnibus though.
+Joe My secret hope is that the reprint it with the second half of that run even though it wasn't written or drawn by the same team. I know there's a completely collection which ties up the series but I'd love to see the omnibus expanded to fit the whole thing
+Nerdventures I'm right there with you. I do like the Faction stuff more, but the Orson stories are really good too. I also thought the omni had the whole run.
omg you said invincible, That is legit like one of my favorite books. I mean it is fantasic. And reads like a long book. But you pick it up and take breaks from it and it is still great.

A great concept where we are the invaders and the lead is a strong female alien character just very different with great writing and artistry. Also Image's The Hunt, Throwaways, and Renato Jones 1% are awesome new ones. I think you would enjoy them! Thanks for getting back to me and I love your channel!
Saga is probably my fave comic at the moment

Hey man, nice video. You give good reviews, did good on touching on what you felt were important points which I found interesting enough to stay watching =] I ordered watchmen but think I am going to hold off on reading it, I have heard now that maybe I should not start with that one but I very much look forward to reading it.
You put a lot of thought and effort into this! Great job!
Just found your channel. Very nice list. I checked out your channel and noticed you haven’t posted in a while. I hope you have more vids coming. I plan on checking out your back catalog. Good job
Daredevil miller was the best comic born again
Born Again is tight!
I have a fringe recommendation:
If you are into crime stories and police procedurals, if you are interested in super heroes, but are not completely sold on the concept:
Try "Gotham Central" by Brubaker and Rucka with amazing art by Lark. It's an awesome comic book. :)
As someone who is starting to get into comics, this was helpful. Most of these I had on my list to get so this was reassuring. Ill try out the others you mentioned. Is there a Marvel starting point? DC was alot easier to jump into than Marvel unless I am doing it wrong.
imo, alternative comics are a great way for new comic readers and stand alone titles
Alan Moore and Grant Morrison are the reasons I got into comics! I'm a giant psychedelic hippie so it makes sense lol
To me, DC: The New Frontier is the best starting point for a new comic reader. It's very accessible, but not lacking any depth or scale. Very well written, spans a wide amount of the DCU, and with Darwyn Cooke's best (IMO) art ever.
No. Do not start with superheroes.
I started with the killing joke
And I was hooked
Daniel Clowes is how I got into comics, Patience is a masterpiece
Great way to get into comics!
Batman the killing joke, berserk, darth vader (2015) are what I started with :D
Great video man. Love your choices and content of books for new readers. I like your choice of Year One Batman for new readers personally. That's a great book to dive into.
New sub too. I'm going to go back and check out more of your videos. Keep posting and thanks for sharing.

The first comics I ever read were Batman: Arkham Asylum, Year One and The Long Halloween.
Got to say nailbiter is a gem of a read and recommend it to any body interested in the horror side of comics.
I like batman year one and batman a long halloween! :)
My first comic was Vault of Horror nice to start i think :)
thanks a lot! great videos by the way
My recommendation would be Saga for the adult reader!
I started this month with captain america winter soldier & avengers forever
omg you said invincible, That is legit like one of my favorite books. I mean it is fantasic. And reads like a long book. But you pick it up and take breaks from it and it is still great.
Alan Moore the Killing joke is amazing though!
