    This movie had some of the best lines ever.

    May Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert both rest in peace. What I loved about the two of them especially was when they would agree to disagree on the way movies were presented; and for lack of seeing similar shows -- if they exist today -- that dynamic is both lacking and sorely missed.
    Apart from that, as a former U.S. Marine, Heartbreak Ridge did portray Marines of that time in a more truthful light than some groups of people would lead others to believe. At one point, Roger said that Clint Eastwood didn't portray a typical Marine in the movie. I begged to differ, though.
    For the Marines both former and current, how many Marines in your time did you know who went out to town and did a pub crawl, go to a strip bar, pick up hookers, look for fights after getting loaded, or get into one form of trouble or another whether they got caught or not?
    At the same time, how many other Marines did you know in your time in the Corps who essentially did the opposite of the above examples? Personally, I saw my fair share on both sides.
    Then there is also the internal politics relating to the Corps and other branches of the Armed Forces. There are the enlisted members training to get their hands dirty in combat, the guys who eat and sleep and hang out together like family, and then there are the officers who seem to care more about strictly enforcing rules than to knowing their troops well enough to equal parts relate to them and more effectively lead them in and out of combat.
    Basically, Ebert and Siskel were both right about the movie in a lot of respects. However, there were still many subplots and details to the movie that those who have lived as such -- as Marines -- can relate to far better than any civilian, movie critic or otherwise, ever could or will.

    What makes this film different is that it ISN'T about a raw recruits and a tough DI, like Full Metal Jacket and other Marine movies.. These guys had been Marines for awhile and totally had their way with previous platoon sergeants who gave up on them. Eastwood's character refused to give up on them.

The kids and his commanding officer have never been in battle before. The whole movie is about a peacetime army who suddenly finds that one of these phony alerts is for real.
    SISKEL: Yeah. And, and, uh...it's, uh...it's boring.

    A great and under rated movie. At first I thought, oh no, another Clint movie, then it grew on me, based on stuff I experienced in the military. Funny and "semi" real, yet believable in ways, I trained some at Camp Pendleton. To me this movie puts a comedic value to war, hardly what we need these days. Being in the military, from my experience, it is tough, people die, and I wanted to get out ASAP.

    Make no mistake, Heartbreak Ridge has a lot of flaws, but it is iconic in so many ways. I was in the Army when this move came out and it was a huge favorite of all of us in my battery. Totally disagree with Siskel (rip). The part of the film between Eastwood and Mason, which Siskel wanted to see MORE of for chrissake, was one of its biggest flaws. Siskel obviously never served.

    • @squatch570
      @squatch570 5 лет назад

      @@thelordofhellaz It's not the same thing. That's like saying "Well I didn't have cancer but I know a lot of people who did." That's just idiotic. Siskel wants a love story focus in a movie about a near retirement Sgt. and young, untrained Marines going into their first battle together... what a jackass Siskel is! He also said the same thing about "The Terminator", he wanted the focus on the love story between Sara Connor and Reese when it's a story about the origin point of the fight for the future of mankind against machines before it ever happens. He's so far off in a lot of these reviews. And it's not about the action in Heartbreak Ridge or The Terminator that are important, it's the story and characters in focus but Siskel wants a different character focus.

    • @codeoptimizationware2803
      @codeoptimizationware2803 4 года назад

      @
      brothertee1017:
      I thought that was a bit odd too. The _Dirty Harry_ films, for only a few examples, were much more violent than _Heartbreak Ridge_ . I think it's good that _Heartbreak Ridge_ wasn't terribly violent as I'd bet that wouldn't have mixed well with the oft comedic moments within the same film.
      Besides that, I have to go with Ebert's take over Siskel's: I liked _Heartbreak Ridge_ too and would give it a Thumb Up also.

  • @trwent
    @trwent 6 лет назад

    At first when I saw this film I mainly agreed with Roger Ebert, but as time has passed I do not think it has aged well, and I am now more of Gene Siskel's point of view. Clint does appear tired, the training of the green recruits we have all seen a million times before, the experienced "grunt" versus the inexperienced boss is very cliche, and quite frankly Grenada was a "war" of very little consequence. Marsha Mason was a strong point in the film, and I agree with Siskel that she should have had more screen time with Clint.

    The one liners were good, the Suede part seems to be the most popular, and could have dealt little more with his wife. But it seems like it could have been written better. I think Ebert kisses ass sometimes. The Grenada comment was right on, that little battle seemed very poorly done. I think they made the Marines look real bad here, real stupid. These guys looked like real whimps, esp that scrawny guy. A marine platoon is not like that...maybe at the beginning of basic training I could see them like that. Clint Eastwood is one of my all time favorites. This movie could have been done great but it wasn't. Yes was a little boring, and the final battle scene was a total boner killer.

    Just watched this film for the first time. It almost felt like it should be a campy B-movie, but it was played dead serious. It made the marines look terrible. Soldiers were obnoxious morons, officers were incompetent pencil pushers, and Highway was anachronistic. While Eastwood had a few good one-liners, it wasn't enough to carry the movie.
