That "Daughter of the Sea"- bit at the end gave me an idea. This song was originally a song Daelin Proudmoore made up for his daughter, to show his love for her. But after Jaina turned her back on her father, when he threatened Thrall's Horde, the Kul Tirans turned the song into a warning against Jaina, who in their mind had betrayed both her family and homeland. But after the Alliance campaign of BfA, and the years folowing Shadowlands, I could see the Kul Tirans make yet a new version, this time aimed at their enemies:
"Beware, beware the Daughter of the Sea. Beware, I heard them cry.
Their words carried upon the ocean breeze, as they sank beneath the tides.
Those blood- soaked shores, of Zandalaaar, where the Horde fleet fought and died.
The troll king fell at Zuldazaaar, because she led the charge!
All hail, all hail, the Daughter of the Sea! All hail, she led us to victory!
Once more the priiide in our nation's eyes! She is our destiny!
When she was captured by the Banshee Queen, our heroes followed her.
What else to save their Daughter of the Sea, into the Shadowlands.
And there they found, in the realm of death, our admiral in chains.
And when they faced those twisted sooouuuls, they feared that she was lost.
Tormented for many weeks, wounded to the core.
To the Jailer's minions she cried: "Beware the Daughter of the Sea!"
I heard, I heard, across the moonlit sea, from our enemies:
"Beware, beware the Daughter of the Sea. Beware of me!"

It only works if they can actually pull it off but I feel like the direction change is addressing a very specific and real problem which is that most all of the lore that people care about in Warcraft is from the RTS series but we have exhausted all of that and 1 off expansions had no way to rebuild something new that people cared about. Making the story more episodic and spanning multiple zones and themes I think they have the CHANCE of doing some real lore building that can keep interest in the new stories that are well past the RTS games.

Sure, a feeling theme is a theme, maybe even a great one for a movie or series, but not a good one for games.
Besides, what makes Anduin so special to begin with that he's the only character in game to break down because of the thing he was forced to do? There are not only leaders in war, the foot soldiers suffer too maybe more. A great leader should be the one who guide those people out of the downward spiral, not plunge into it headfirst.

44:04 -- I’ve never understood people somehow thinking people have a problem with Anduin showing emotions…?? Considering how legendary Arthas’ storyline was? Varian always showed emotions? He was just a mature King that people respected?
It just has to be warranted, you can't force people to care about things they haven't been immersed in.
People just care about it being done properly, and with respect, dignity and care, which is rarely done, and hasn’t been done in the Warcraft series for awhile.
And Anduin is a warrior. He’s the King of a consistently war torn world, he /has/ to be a warrior whether he likes it, or not, otherwise the Crown should go to someone else. You don’t rule nations that way. And war will always dominate Azeroth, no matter how many little rainbow sparkles or paint you want to put over it, because that’s not the way people work, peace is never forever, life is filled with constant "ups" and "downs", and it’s not the way the world of Azeroth has worked, for thousands upon thousands of years, and our time is just a small pocket of it, despite all the events that have happened. This is normal in Azeroth's history.
Sorry, it just personally ticks me off hearing that, because it’s disingenuous and false. People are passionate about it, and the complaints are focused on heartfelt, emotional moments like that feeling incredibly forced, and not earned, or given the respect that is needed, or being fed far too much of it, to the point where everything just feels sickly sweet now. //Everyone// loves “emotional” moments when it is done well. I’ve lost count how many people I’ve watched sob when Invincible is played. the scene where Arthas' murders his father is palpable. Wrath was considered one of the best expansions BECAUSE of it's rich story, the fact that it directly continued from Warcraft 3 and Arthas' downfall from a Prince behind a prosperous nation. Not a single person complaining ACTUALLY has a problem with this, it's because it's done so poorly and we know what can be done, Blizzard fans are passionate, and it's frustrating to see people being happy being spoon-fed sh*t from their multi-billionare dollar company, and saying thank you, knowing they CAN do SOOOO much better.
You just need to do it well and respect people’s own emotions. It very quickly becomes sickly sweet when you just throw bubbles at everyone. I don't care about anything anymore, because it feels as if nothing matters. You need a healthy balance of both, which is sorely lacking, and I'm truly hoping we go back to the old Warcraft storytelling that everyone loved, with the War Within.

So I have been watching all the Blizzcon stuff, and I have found a thought, The overall Story arch will peek with Thrall sacrificing himself to save Anduin. It will be similar to what Gromosh Hellscream did for the Orcs, only Thrall will be doing it for Azeroth as a whole. This will push Anduin to really step up due to Thralls sacrifice for him. just wanted to document theory before anything comes out.

I think you all missed what Chris said, right before he announced the World soul saga, he said "the decision has been made today" ie they only decided last minute to actually announce the world soul saga at all, that might explain the lack of props around the hall and the reverse structure, if they had made this decision a lot earlier in the planning stage, the structure might have been organised better to maximise hype, at least that was my take on it, the decision to announce the world soul saga was a late one.

  • @blueberryiswar

What could also be is that they do the world rework along those 3 expansion. So you are down there in war within but then something comes up in an old zone and that zone is remade, repeat.
At the end of the 3 expacs all zones have been retouched. At least thats something I think could happen.

Complete aside not having to do anything with T&E's great content; but the last time I did any recording was over a decade ago in uni, and the idea of trusting a camera to select your focus was right out. Yet just about every single RUclipsr these days whom I watch relies on it (and invariably suffers for it). If anyone can answer my tangential question: Why do people not set their focus before recording in the first place? Are they not aware they can, or is there some best practice philosophy to it I'm missing?

Ion: but we don’t have anything to show in time for Blizzcon!

Ion: That ain’t going to work! You know they want content!
Chris: you -know- who I am right?! I AM the content! I’ll handle it and knock this out of the park. Just get the crew on double time and start rolling on the new plans and I’ll softball it in to the fans and tell them the new plan of action! They should use the time between now and the last patch of The Final Titan to make Warcraft 4.

The three expansion reveal reminded me so much of what Bungie did with Destiny 2, where they presented the trio of expansions they had planned for the future (with the last one being pushed now from February to June)

I would much rather have planned out storylines like Worldsoul Saga and Marvel, the the unplanned stuff that has left Star Wars movies a mess.

As someone very casual to WoW that comes and goes(but is informed about patches), I think the announcement was great(for all the WoW stuff). Its a shame we didnt get at least a tease of a future Warcraft RTS game, but the rest was fantastic and I'm thinking about coming back hard and prepare for the new expansion. They sold me on it.

20:06 with microsoft buying blizzard, i think after the worldsoul saga we'll get a time skip which will allow the world revamp but more importantly it'll allow a Warcraft 4 RTS which can be used to set up both a new bbeg and the reason the world gets revamped

honestly, i don't think there's gonna be much difference "after soul saga". The game is not ending, there is no reason for it to end or transform into wow2. The expansions will continue to come out, new stories will be told, maybe as a saga, maybe as a standalone. For me, the biggest question mark stands on the evergreen systems. Im interested to see how will they continue to stay relevant and not turn into a chore. Will delves be engaging in the third expansion? Will they be yet another "do 5 timewalking dungeons" ? Will there be too many evergreens? I did like the idea of new interesting systems being added in the expansions as like the "shtick" for that expansion, because it gave sort of a refresh to each one. Then they tried to make mission table a recurring system and how did that go...

to the conversation around 35:00 .... i repeat what ion and the others in all the interview mechanically said as if it was programmed in their heads to say "these are expansions, so FOUR zones, EIGHT dungeons and A (ONE!) raid" --- which to me is like, erm no? expensions "as we know them" have more than only 4 zones and one raid, if they added "at launch" but they all said this exact sentence as is, which makes me think u @Tali are right, they wont give an additional patch zone anymore

38:12 that has been my biggest complaint with patches; just when I start to get a little bit comfortable with an area... I'm dragged off somewhere else far on the map to a completely disconnected story. It works in a micro-season (an expansion + patch) but after a new expansion comes out it leaves a trail of chaos for new players to try to make heads-an-tails of. Having patches stay in an "area" makes for a much more enjoyable overall "old content" experience for players in my humble opinion.

This was surprisingly more level-headed discussion than I was expecting. Blizzard is amazing at marketing and selling, but will they finally deliver? I hope for they can live up to the expectations of a saga.

I also really like the idea of the saga, that stories can be told over multiple expansions. I find if I don't watch outside stuff, and since I don't always pay attention to quest text, I can often not really understand what's going on in the story, or why I'm doing certain things. My hope is that the saga idea will let them zoom in on the story a bit, instead of having to depend on a few hours of main story quest and a couple cutscenes.

I dropped the game at the beginning of shadowlands, not because I thought it was a bad expansion but because the feeling of playing the game at a fundamental level was just the same as older expansions. Nothing feels new anymore, new vfx for skills won't make the combat feel less old. All the quest are mechanically the same they've always been and I find myself sleeping at the keyboard more often then not. I think the game needs a proper reboot or sequel with a new engine and a completely new and more engaging combat system. The idea of having to endure 3 more expansions before this COULD happen terrifies me. I keep following the news because I love Wow's world and characters, but it's highly possible that I would only come back only if a proper WoW 2 gets announced. Or maybe project Odyssey could be the game I really wanna play😂

Came here after Dan’s darkmoon faire video and I’m really glad I did. Love to see Soul as well! Panels like these are so much better than echo chamber content where everybody starts to homogenise their opinions.
Edit: If BFA was all faction war stuff, and shadowlands was completely replaced with an old god nyalotha expansion the only thing of value lost would be Denathrius… Makes you wonder if Classic progression will just skip right from BFA to DF when/if it gets that far.

I feel like maybe there is a difference between reactions for people who were able to go to Blizzcon vs people who weren't. Like if you were at Blizzcon, I can imagine it being a bit of a let down with them not having as much physical stuff there to avoid spoilers, but as someone who wasn't able to go, the whole thing and having no idea they were going to announce THREE expacs in one go just really blew my socks off, I was so so so so excited.

I think if we do see a WoW 2, then it doesn’t have to mean we’d lose any progress as evidenced by the way they ported things across to Overwatch 2. That said, I’ve wondered recently if Overwatch 2 was a bit of an experiment to see if it would be a good idea for World of Warcraft, and if it was then I’d say that the experiment showed that it wouldn’t. I think the only way we might see a sequel to WoW is if the game desperately needs a new engine and system in order to achieve what they’d like to going forward, and they realise it’s easier to start from scratch than it is to try and take apart the current systems and retrofit them.

metzen did say that they had decided *that day* to release the info on the next three expansions. so if things seemed terribly rushed(and they likely were veeeery rushed) then that would be why. making decisions at zero hour to prop up the wow segment because all of the other ip news was thin. i believe they thought they needed a bit more oomph to propel themselves, and the community, forward. that being said i think the new systems and lore have been received very well, and a lot of ex-players are looking like they might dip a toe back in.

right after he talks about the release cadence and not needing to have grandkids move the keyboard and mouse for us, he goes into how the scope of the story is so grand they decided to change things up that very day(paraphrased). then he goes into the whole 3 expacs announcement.@@KirkpatrickSounds

I think the biggest issue for me is that I want to skip The War Within and get right on to Midnight. I'm sure others feel the same, or the same but for The Last Titan. The issue with announcing a bunch is that some people will just be waiting for one of the later ones.
