I, myself (a very humble, quiet and incredible shy norwegian - like all our sort), discovered Sir Les just some months ago, and wow!!! - I just can't quit watching, laughing, laughing, watching!! What a genious Barry Humphries is! And good Heavens - what times have changed... Imagine a fellow like sir Les - try stand-up-comedy today. I am afraid he would be slaughtered... Nevertheless! In MY mind (b. 1961) he will NEVER be incorrect! He is just a GENUINE GENIOUS!!
Same here!!! I’ve always been aware of Edna ever since I was a kid. I didn’t get her back then. But, I only recently discovered Les. So GROSS!!! But, I Love Him 💜💜💜
I think Les has his place even now - he seems like he could be friends with a certain former American President with a history in filum and with sheilas. Honestly this is the first I've seen him, and he feels like what Liberals and Democrats think Boris Johnson crossed with Donald Trump would be.
Les was created by Barry Humphries to mock people who are like Les, and there were plenty in Australia when he was created and also to mock people that admire people like Les, ie those that just let these scumbag types do what they like just because they have celebrity or power, think Saville, Brand or Trump and their long list of enablers Another thing is people seem to think this was a golden age of no TV censorship, which is utter bullshit, what you are seeing of Les on TV is censored by Barry himself as he didn't want to be banned from TV and for the fact he kept the best stuff for his live shows. It's hilarious actually knowing the real story of Les and seeing the anti woke wankers who are the target of Les' lampooning thinking he's their god!
This guy deserves any and all awards that he gets. He's a comedic genius who has been lifting people's spirits for decades. I deeply regret not going to see him when I had the chance.
What a class act Barry Humphries was and I don't think the world will see the likes of his talent ever again. His "Sir Les" and "Dame Edna" were believable characters and so funny. R.I.P. Barry, thank you for making us laugh.
Haha the little VHS incident at 18:05 really brought back some memories of life when anyone in the family could and would randomly tape over your stuff
You can just see the dad of the house rushing in to press 'stop' after the little one tried to record their favourite cartoon and he realised he'd forgotten to rip the sellotape off the the break-off tab hole which ensured your favorite recordings couldn't be taped over!! 😂
Yes, just say enough to prompt the conversational flow, then shut up ! He was probably the UK's best chat show host ever. All told, 'Parkinson' ran for about 20 years.
@@gdj6298 that's right. And Parkinson could ask some quite searching, even slightly edgy questions, but not to the point where he would embarrass the guest. Or at least, if it seemed the guest was becoming embarrassed or uncomfortable, Parkinson would change tack - as in the famous interview with Woody Allen.
What struck me about this interview, is what a wonderful and humble man Barry was. Such an honest interview and so nice to hear him 'in proper voice' What a legend : )
2:27 I like how he defaults to telling his answers down the barrel of the telly and occasionally remembers to glance at Parkinson next to him. Always knows his audience.
At age 18 I don’t think I appreciated his range of genius, drawing as it does on 100 years of theatre, Vaudeville, humorous 78 rpm songs by comedians of the 1910s to 20s like Billy Williams, Sandy MacFarlane etc. Sadly I didn’t get his full brilliance until I was in my 50s-but good on you, wished I could have seen a live show too :-)
Absolutely love this guy, hugely talented. Watching everything I get get my hands on , he’s a bright light in this frightening world at the moment ❤️🙏👍
I can never get over how Ronnie Barker could be Arkwright and Fletch... Just such contrasting characters.... Fletch in particular was such a well acted character...
So unique, such fun, witty, always massively entertaining and doing it all for our laughter and happiness. Actually an intellectual of the highest order, those of my generation are unlikely to see such a superb performer again. Sir Les, Dame Edna, Sandy Stone and Barry Humphries, thank you all for so much uplifting supreme enjoyment throughout my entire lifetime! Please RIP, God Bless you and your family and thank you so much.
Sophistication, intelligence and outrageously and deftly delivered barbed wit of the first rank. The number at the end like an Eric Coates march. Superb!
Barry H. is an "act" just as much as Edna or Les. Who's in charge? We may never know. Each an originals. Successfully. and left me laughing... again. Wow! This was wonderful. Thanks Edna and Berry and Les. and sweet old Parkie.
What an incredible entertainer Barry Humphries is!! The song about Australia is more than that. It's an anthem! Easily one of the greatest performers of our time
I haven't the words to even come close to how much I enjoyed this...bloody hell what has happened to comedy! I can't get enough of the old UK classic comedies
Sir Les’s song ‘She’s My Old Lady’ at 30:06 is a fair dinkum gem! We’re also unlikely to see again such funny, bizarre and skillful dance moves! 🕺🏼 at 32:16 💃🏻 Les’s superb performance has the flavor of roaring twenties Vaudeville and old 78 rpm recordings by wonderful comedians of that era like Sandy McFarlane, Billy Williams and Billy Murray… NO WORRIES! 😂
Elizabeth Dimmock can you imagine her daughter Valmay holding up the Sperm Bank with a sawn-off rifle? Then having the tellers throw test tubes at her? Unbelievable!
Brilliant show, parkie at his sublime best, alongside his 3 guests. Sir Les has always been my favorite 🤩 but have tae give the dame her due on prostrate machines and her bridesmaid !! Let’s not forget Sir Leszzzz assistant from thé outback ….. Baza being baza in his cheq suit and pink tie is always stylish 😉.
How wrong you are Naz. We laugh our asses off at Sir Les & more. Outrageous jokes & limitless sarcasm are hallmarks of stand-up & drag. Even children can watch without great fear of contamination or corruption. Why? Because they hear all the laughter at these ridiculous comments made in jest. Poofty is the mildest slight ever & I believe I've heard them all starting in school where kids can be ruthless critics. Then the army where uniformity is a different thing to each soldier. But the strongest harassment came from other gays. They know exactly where & when to strike.
I have been lucky enough to see Dame Edna et al in concert half a dozen times from the early 70's to the late 90's and witnessed the spell she casts over the audience. I say "she" because, despite the first half being male-dominated - Sir Les, Lance Boyle, Sandy Stone - when Edna comes on, she's like a much-loved naughty Aunt who captivates and manipulates in the nicest, funniest way. Every show is different, thought-provoking and hilarious.
Same here I nearly broke my ribs laughing watching Sir Les, Sandy Stone, Lance Boyle and Dame Edna in one show. I doubt any comedian could ever match that... he’s incomparable.
3:55 How amazing! Our English teacher, Mr Shrubb (on Australian exchange with Mr Aubrey, circa 1977) used to relate this story. He said that his neighbour on a flight had said, "watch this!" and then pulled exactly this stunt (though in Shrubb's story, it had been with tinned fruit salad). I have never forgotten the story - and now have to wonder whether his neighbour had been THE Barry Humphries - or whether the stunt actually gained a life of its own amongst Australian practical jokers.
,,,,,,,oh my lordy lordy LOL @19:33 'Poufia' ~ oh whatta day! everybody has GOT to devote at least one entire day for giggles! Dame Edna, Les Patterson aka Bary Humphries THANK YOU luv!
He got the Missus and me a beauty one night when we arrived late at The Regent Theatre in Sydney. Apparently, Barry Humphries, ( Les Paterson) doesn't like latecomers to his show so he got the usherette to lead us right up to the front row along to Les's feet where he leaned down to us spraying beer all over us as he said, " Here's another satisfied looking couple". To which the audience roared with laughter as did I but the wife didn't, she didn't get the joke and she spat the dummy. Eventually, she got it after a free bourbon and coke from the manager. It was hilarious.
For older Aussie ' dinky die tales of a true blue boy'. To think 1st saw him as Mrs Edna Everage in the black and white days of Australian T.V. Bloody beauty Mate. Parky and Humphries both legends.
Here in Melbourne where I live thy used to have the Barry Humphries Award for the best comedian every year. But have since taken his name off it now. You know who got offended as Barry would say?
Thank you for the memories Barry. And on behalf of all Australians I would like to apologise for the pretentious wankers at the Melbourne arts festival . Rest in peace
RIP Barry Humphries you and your characters will be hugely missed and thank you so much for all the laughs and joy
I, myself (a very humble, quiet and incredible shy norwegian - like all our sort), discovered Sir Les just some months ago, and wow!!! - I just can't quit watching, laughing, laughing, watching!!

He's a comedic genius who has been lifting people's spirits for decades.
I deeply regret not going to see him when I had the chance.
Yes,a genius.
He is an Aussie-born legend - a rarity nowadays.
i saw him in brisbane as dame and he was amazing i will over the moon to get to be there
Never fails to amuse& make us roar with laughter
Seeing Humphries in Edinburgh about 20 years ago was the best night of comedy I've ever experienced. A comedic genius.
The greatest entertainer bar none. His caustic wit and perfect timing is unsurpassed. A master of his craft.
Les Patterson has to be one of the best comedy creations of all time.
Mr. Humphries is comedic genius personified. His style of delivery is inimitable, and his timing is always spot on. Thank you for posting this.
Literally just heard of Barry's passing while I watching this. Absolute legend. You will be sorely missed 😢
What a class act Barry Humphries was and I don't think the world will see the likes of his talent ever again. His "Sir Les" and "Dame Edna" were believable characters and so funny. R.I.P. Barry, thank you for making us laugh.
He was a genius, a term i dont use lightly. Thank you for making the world a funnier place. RIP.
Haha the little VHS incident at 18:05 really brought back some memories of life when anyone in the family could and would randomly tape over your stuff
Indeed! Shocked me last time I watched it :)
I know. And the wonky music on the stretched tape...😂 I miss VHS....
You can just see the dad of the house rushing in to press 'stop' after the little one tried to record their favourite cartoon and he realised he'd forgotten to rip the sellotape off the the break-off tab hole which ensured your favorite recordings couldn't be taped over!! 😂
What a fascinating man. And what a wonderful interviewer is Michael Parkinson. He actually allows his guests to speak.
I was impressed before by this wonderful man; now more so that he speaks of his recovery from alcoholism and does all of his work stone cold sober. 🎉❤
You can almost smell Les Patterson through the screen. Humphries is absolutely brilliant.
Pure comedy, harmless fun but can you imagine if this was broadcast on the BBC now ?
He called it “new Puritanism” and that is most definitely the truth. Political correctness has been the death of comedy.
Dame Edna - Megastar
Les Patterson - Legend
Barry Humphries - Comedy Genius
What struck me about this interview, is what a wonderful and humble man Barry was. Such an honest interview and so nice to hear him 'in proper voice'
What a legend : )
2:27 I like how he defaults to telling his answers down the barrel of the telly and occasionally remembers to glance at Parkinson next to him. Always knows his audience.
Thanks for uploading the full show. Barry Humphries is indeed a national treasure.
Now July 2022 and still hilarious! 👌🙂😅
This is a rare gem. Barry Humphries being Barry Humphries. And, even when he's being serious, he's bloody funny.
(Addition) And a chundering teapot !
Saw him live in 1979...mesmerising and impactful when I was 18....RIP mate and thanks
At age 18 I don’t think I appreciated his range of genius, drawing as it does on 100 years of theatre, Vaudeville, humorous 78 rpm songs by comedians of the 1910s to 20s like Billy Williams, Sandy MacFarlane etc. Sadly I didn’t get his full brilliance until I was in my 50s-but good on you, wished I could have seen a live show too :-)
Articulate, clever and witty. Modern comedians are rarely any of these.
Well said . Genius
Barry Humphries is pure and unbridled Genius (capital 'G ' intended) !
Thank you for uploading the whole show. It's always great to hear Barry Humphries as himself. The Sir Les segment is superb: his idea for a "fillum".
Glad you enjoyed - the only bit they made me cut was the opening music ;)
Thanks for uploading this in its entirety. Sir Humphries is a national treasure!
I would put Barry Humphries in the top 5 comedians all time.
Who?
I'd put him in the top 1% of all time ! He's peerless!.
Billy Connolly, Joan Rivers and Barry are the 3 equal No1 comedians of all time
@@cragerzz Billy Loudmouth Lout Connolly....?
Now you're the comedian, buddy
Barry is in a class of his own. Sorry Billy ,Bob ,Joan.
A most amazing man. Truly gifted and born to entertain us. You are loved Barry. 😂💜💋
Absolutely love this guy, hugely talented. Watching everything I get get my hands on , he’s a bright light in this frightening world at the moment ❤️🙏👍
Ook
Barry, Peter Sellers and Ronnie Barker are the best actors to ever walk this earth. They have filled my heart with joy. Thanks xx.
Fnut Boy
Amen
I can never get over how Ronnie Barker could be Arkwright and Fletch... Just such contrasting characters.... Fletch in particular was such a well acted character...
Total class, funny, unasuming, brilliant comedy, and what a nice man.
So unique, such fun, witty, always massively entertaining and doing it all for our laughter and happiness. Wonderful entertainer and very touching interview with the man himself. God bless!
Glad I got to see him! Hilarious! Nothing short of brilliant. May he rest in peace. He'll keep the heavens and ea th laughing for all eternity.
Sophistication, intelligence and outrageously and deftly delivered barbed wit of the first rank. The number at the end like an Eric Coates march. Superb!

There's just one word to describe what Barry Humphries was and that is "Star"
What an incredible entertainer Barry Humphries is!! The song about Australia is more than that. It's an anthem! Easily one of the greatest performers of our time
A gigantic talent. Cleverest, funniest comedian & actor. RIP 💐🌹💐
I haven't the words to even come close to how much I enjoyed this...bloody hell what has happened to comedy! I can't get enough of the old UK classic comedies
Barry was not English.... AUSTRALIAN...
Sir Les’s song ‘She’s My Old Lady’ at 30:06 is a fair dinkum gem! Elizabeth Dimmock can you imagine her daughter Valmay holding up the Sperm Bank with a sawn-off rifle? Then having the tellers throw test tubes at her? Unbelievable!
Two legends in their own field.
Brilliant interview, thank you for uploading 👍
Pure genius, loved it, thank you for uploading :-0
I didn't know about Mr. Humphries alcoholism... that's excellent that he was able to get help and prosper thereafter.
Barry Humphries, genius!
His ability to improvise is staggering
Wonderful seeing Barry in this interview. I adore Dame Edna and completely believe it is her.
Prter ustinoff I

One of the geniuses of comedy. So very clever a mind did Barry have.
Barry Humphries, the absolute pinnacle of Australian culture and comedy
"Not many people think I can sing, and I'm going to prove it to you now."
Barry himself is just as entertaining as the other two.
This World needs Sir Les now more than ever!!! You with me?
love LES, im glad I lived in his time, that's entertainment..
This is what comedy genius looks like.
"He impugns the fundamental refinement of the Australian character" in deadpan. That really was good.
Thank you , I haven't laughed as much with the Australian National Treasure, Barry Humphreys.
Brilliant. Truly brilliant.
40 years ago. Makes me feel old.🤣🤣
I grew up knowing Les Patterson, he was a goverment chauffer and a great bloke. Rest In Peace Les.
THIS GIY'S UNREAL .. AMAZINGLY TALENTED .. AND IN THIS CHANGING WORLD .. " JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED ! "
A one off!! Fantastic video
The most talented performer of all time.....
Blimey, the woke crowd of today would have heart attacks watching this comedy gold.
Using the term Puffter would be horrific to today.
Gotta love Lez!
I think the spelling is POOFTER.
How wrong you are Naz. We laugh our asses off at Sir Les & more. Outrageous jokes & limitless sarcasm are hallmarks of stand-up & drag. Always good value Barry Humphries as himself and his alter egos.
"No worries" absolute genius!
‘“Ya with me”?
The best comedian of all time.
A genius.
Completely unique.
A one-off, up there with Groucho, Rodney, Carrey.
And he should be knighted.
Great post

The way he talks as Dame Edna is very similar to the way he actually speaks... I never knew!
What an incredibly unique comedian. Here is my cliche comment on a video. I mean it though.
RIP Barry, Sir Les and Dame Edna ❤
Up there with the greatest comedians this World has ever had.Without exception.
A national treasure should be knighted
I shall write the queen.
Brilliant comedian ❤ cannot believe Les/Edna are the same person. We all have to go but oh my, what a loss 😢
He's even playing himself as a comedy character.
The one lines off the cuff are utter priceless

Parky playing Sir Les' straight man, serendipitously, was genius.
Underappreciated. He really set sir les and dame edna off to perfection. I love watching him struggling not to laugh.
Thats great ..humour ..satire ..bring it back ... please ...
Bloody brilliant, mate!
We will never see the like again. He is a one off. Brilliant.
He’s so handsome. That tie with that suit. He cracks me up💜
Very talented - Note wearing the Garrick Club Tie.
I’d love to sit down and have a chat (listen to) this genius of a man.
Absolute genius and a great act.
Here in Melbourne where I live thy used to have the Barry Humphries

Yep. They disgraced themselves. Hannah Gadsby is awful. Barry was an actual genius.
Jeez he was just so good.
We really need him back ...
Wonderful, elegant, eloquent man.
Rip Barry Humphries. I'll miss Edna x
It would be great if Dame Edna were actually made a Dame. I see no reason why she shouldn’t be given some who’ve been awarded it.
She was a real Dame. Our Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam bestowed the honour on the character.
The term icon immediately springs to mind
