- Опубликовано: 27 янв 2017
- Today, WestJet 1860, a typical flight from Calgary to Honolulu had some issues with their landing gear after departure. They made a pass over the airport at 10,000 feet to try and determine the problem (not included in the video), then came back around to do a low approach on runway 29, when it became pretty clear that at some point during departure, the forward left main gear tire had come off the aircraft. The tire ended up landing within the airport boundary on the takeoff roll and was found embedded in a runway sign. The crew ended up circling for another 45 minutes before safely arriving on runway 17L with fire trucks in tow. It was eventually determined that the aircraft was safe to taxi to the gate. All of this is included in the video, with full ATC communications. Enjoy the video of this unusual event!
Thanks for watching!

When things go wrong, its great to know you are in the hands of dedicated professionals. Every one played their part in a calm manner with the perfect outcome.
This is why flying is still the safest form of transport.
was on a flight decades ago that blew a tire right main gear. felt like the plane went over a speed-bump. took a piece out of the flap, the fire crew overtaking us apparently notified the pilot that there was no immediate danger so we didn't even stop--went directly to the jetway. these guys train constantly for these situations. hats off to them! good vid, dude
Good intentions aside. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. This will however be examined fully, rest assured. Another great job performed by all. I would fly WestJet, anywhere, anytime. Keep up the good work..
donnyboy me too
Wow, that's a lot of views! Awesome that you caught the entire event, and the comms. with the fire trucks and ATC was great. Very professional-- everybody involved :)
Hey...any day you can successfully land an aircraft with fewer parts than it took off with...is a good day!
Very good ha
Those views are just incredible , thanks for sharing this rare occurance!
Holy crap dude! This is one amazing catch! Also great lighting as well!
I can just imagine the wheel bouncing away onto the Deerfoot
Great video Alex, good job getting the different angles to show that the tire was missing. It sounds like you had some pretty challenging conditions with the wind.
Absolutely fascinating video! Great that you were able to capture this event!
aeroplaneman747
Fantastic footage, very well put together and outstanding quality! 👏👏👏
What a fantastic video with great ATC communication involved
Thanks for upload & good catch.
Back in the 1990's once worked at an Air Force base in Texas, and witnessed - on the ramp - a C5 lift off losing at least 4 or 5 massive tires at one time! Several main tires fell off and one half of the nose gear as well. The plane came back to make a runway flyover for inspection. It was cleared to land very carefully touching down with the mains and delicately set down on the nose gear. Fortunately most tires bounced extremely high off the runway and remained there. There was one tire that ended up on someones property just north of the runway. Never thought I would ever witness such an event. The local newspapers kept it off the headlines in cooperation with the Air Force.
Why would the media stay quiet?
As always another great footage buddy.😉
Wow what a fantastic video! I liked every minute of it!
Glad I subbed your channel today, what a great video.
The landing gear did seem odd, but it took me awhile to determine the problem. I've never seen this before! Awesome catch!
Great capture of the event today ! Keep it up !
Very nicely filmed mate, haven't seen that before!
Except for the typical Calgary chinook winds in January this is an excellent video.
Thank you Alex!!!
Very interesting catch! Well captured, liked
That was a nice landing. That seemed like a really gentle touchdown.
Great job by the atc and pilots
Great Catch! I have never heard of this happening before!
those American plane mechanics suck...
Interesting catch there, liked!
Good catch, and congrats on getting this video in the news. :)
Thanks! :)
Fantastic video!
professionalism at its best all the way around!!!
Bob G all except the guy who was supposed to have tightened it up on the last tyre change!
Wow that was crazy! nice catch
Great catch mate!
Ignore those dislikes... that was perfect!!! Huge like!
Liam Carroll
yes?
I LOVE THOSE BIRDS WHO FLEW IN LARGE FORMATION !
Great video - nice work.
Excellent video!
Why all the dislikes?.. Makes no sense, great video👍
Damnnnnn what a catch man! That must have give y'all spotters some spotting adrenaline lol ;) Anyways fantastic catch and video! :D
Wow fantastic catch! :D
Great job !
Nice work! You must've been freezing
"No major issue with the gear."....missing a tire, wheel, is a major issue in my book. Maybe I'm just a scaredy-cat.
Yes you are.
Nah there just bad asses
Lol
In reply to John Demerse who wonders where the tire is , I'm certain it's still being repaired at Canadian Tire .
Holy crap! that was a awesome catch! keep up the good work! i wish i was there to! What time did the plane land?
Lindo Vídeo
that's cool I guess I'm from Edmonton and surprised this wasn't on the news
I'm here in Calgary , and this is the first i'm hearing of it . Of course maybe I'm just losing my memory .
Amazing
Wow super man Liked
excellent
Thank God the wheel ďidnt hurt any one and all the souls onboard was safe.
Why so many dislikes? Great catch btw.
They sure did a good job keeping the front gear up as long as they could to make a safe landing
Not quite sure what that has to do with it...but ok...
as the angle of attack is higher than it would be with the front gear lowered it reduces the weight on the main gear. but I don't think this side effect was intended. They just didn't jam on the brakes, so the nose kept up for a little longer than it would on a normal landing using autobrakes..
great vid
AWESOME WHAT YOU CAUGHT! - Superb quality!
But how do you lose one tire?! xD

I was working my shift that day, I have close up pics and videos of the plane and the damage
No worries....ground crews are real busy and don't have time to put every last wheel back on. That's why planes have so many extra wheels.
lol
good shoot. bet you were cold in the end. well done.
I believe that was a Quantis plane prior to Westjet service. I have it in 1/400 scale with all of its tires.
Why did the wheel detach? Loose bolts??
Yikes, I would sure hate to have been the guy(s) that signed off on replacing that wheel before it came off.
Great video! I could see the wings wagging due to instability from the faulty landing gear.
No, you couldn't......Thumbs down.
Despite this, I’m still trusting WestJet to get me to Disneyland. YVR to LAX all the way, baby!
I don’t think they do flights to the US. The only international route is to London gatwick
@@raahimkhan7461 Are you joking? They fly to LA, SFO, Santa Ana, San Diego, Phoenix, Vegas, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta, New York, all of the major airports in Hawaii, tons of destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean, etc.
@@raahimkhan7461 also they fly to Paris, Dublin, Rome, Manchester, Edinburgh, Barcelona and Amsterdam
super
well, for the price of my ticket, I'd prefer a plane with the proper number of tires attached. Failing that, however, a cool, calm, and collected flight crew and supporting ground staff is appreciated.
How do get the voices on there microphone
Someone didn't follow the maintenance manual.....I'm guessing they forgot to set the finial torque on the axle nut. There's a torque that seats the bearings first, then you back it off and tighten it with a higher torque for final install... Not only that, but if I'm not mistaken, there's either cotter pins two locking bolts (I'm not that familiar with the 67, but Boeing usually sticks to what works on their airframes) that goes through the axle and the castellated axle nut to prevent it from backing off... Seems like a few steps may have been overlooked... I can assume that the axle is most likely not broken because you can still see the brake pack on the axle.
MSAP report, drug test (aka whiz quiz), and hopefully just a suspension...If this is the case.
Awesome. Apply to work there and install it yourself next time. Tell them you know better and can do a better job. ;)
ZYC 50 guys at my work could tighten those bolts better than the WestJet mechanics.
Then again, we build the gear from forging to ready to bolt on the plane.🤦
RANAgcxgDRANA
ZYC - I like it when people that know what they're talking about comment on videos like this. Don't be such a passive aggressive smart ass about it.
all wrong man all wrong. first torque you apply to the axle nut is HIGHER than the second torque, its to fully seat the bearing to the tapered axle, for example the b777 main wheel first torque is 500 ftlb then second torque is 200 ftlb(you can look it up AMM 32-45-01), for a330 first is 400 and second is 225(AMM 32-41-11). AND boeings do not have cotter pins on the locking bolts' nut of the axle nut. thats airbuses that use cotter pins on those nuts. FINALLY the brakes assy, aka HEAT PACKS, are also hold in position by torque links, so even the axle nut broke off, the brake will NOT fall off, and if the axle is broken at the bogie, which is unlikely to happen, you will see the wheel and brake hanging there by the torque link. hope you are not making your living as an aircraft mechanic man.
my guess is the axle is broken at the threaded part for the axle nut, so the axle nut broke off and the wheel fell, or the wheel rims damaged so the wheel fell off with the wheel bearing still on the axle.
Exact same scenario earlier this year with a United Continental Boeing-777 200 lifting out of LAX, a wheel and tyre on the left main undercarriage fell off due to a bearing failure ,the errant wheel landing in a car park wrecking two or more cars. Nothing to get ones knickers in a twist as the multi wheel bogie main undercarriage of a large modern passenger jet is designed to land safely with one or more tyres burst or missing ,. PanAm Boeing 747 100 SFO 1970 safely landed minus the centre line main undercarriage after striking a light pier during a heavy weight take off.
nice
Something wasn't tightened properly, and went unnoticed for too long?
Where did the tire go?
would have been more interesting if you had mentioned some details like what happend, where did the tire go or land.
Those details are all in the description.
Excellent video. Wonder where that tire is?
In someones back garden... Haha! Someone must of found it?
Someone's keeping it as a spare tire for the car!
How much?
In my Backyard!
Finders keepers I guess...
the cabin lights seemed turned off. is it intended for emergencies like this? kind of protocol?
Generally the cabin lights are turned off for takeoff and landing regardless of the situation. Especially at night so people's eyes don't need time to adjust should something go wrong and a quick evacuation is needed.
Great catch! Wonder where this tire ended up...
I'm pretty sure that gear didn't leave our factory in that condition, lol.
oh gggeezzz I imagine the reason that the hub looked so big was that it had the brake stack still on it a much does a wheel like that wagh?
good work either way
Wanted: New aircraft mechanic. Must be able to check torque settings on wheel nuts...
akremi houssine
Funny enough to joke about , but it would be interesting to know , " if " and " how many " pink slips got issued .
The real mystery is ....... where did that tire go
Because I want it
Bouncing down the Deerfoot 😂
next time back off on the wind noise huh other then that great vid
cool woah
It's flight 1860?
SCARY!
I bet they wont go back to Canadian tire ;)
Here's a link showing what happened to the tire that was missing. avherald.com/h?article=4a497d62.
About 9 months later (Oct. 2017) this same plane had an "Uncontained Engine Failure" while flying from Toronto to London. Did quite a bit of damage, but landed ok,
You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel . . .
Airlines want to retire the 767's, and people scratch their head why WestJet took them. This is why. I've read that they've had so many issues with ther 67's.
I'm curious... What caught the crews attention in the first place to clue them in that there was an issue with the left main? If I were to guess...maybe a brake or most likely an anti-skid system fault.. The tachometer for the anti-skid would have seen something as it would have stopped spinning or slowed down dramatically as all the other wheels were still spinning / accelerating...at least when they got above 80knts "ish" and with weight on wheels. With that, the crew may have initially thought they blew a tire on take off roll....only to find out later that the tire assembly is.......well..........missing... Not good...
Scot Isley Oh I don't know...perhaps the wheel being left behind on the ground spinning away from the a/c may have provided a few folks with some clues.
Tower saw the wheel come off during departure, and the crew also saw a low pressure indicator on that particular wheel immediately after rotation. They left the gear down and went from there.
Someone found a good flower planter for their yard. Where did the tire go? Its a big tire. Wtf?
These landing gears should be redesign. In case mechanical failures, the pilots and screw members should be able to get down there and cranking it to it landing position!!! Hey Boeing, McDonald Douglas are you guys reading my notes?
1) There’s already a gravity assist feature on all landing gear.
2) McDonald Douglas does not exist anymore
The landing is at night and you can't see much.
Thank god for safety redundancies.
This was so nicely caught on camera ... But are you sure the entire wheel is not missing here? Could swear that it was.
KUDOS to this crew for handling this so effectively and making a successful night time landing. WJA have not had much luck with their Boeing 763W fleet which has come from Qantas (mostly if not all) via a Blended Winglets retro-fit. Although the average age of these airframes was quite high the retro-fit would not have been recommended to WJA if these airframes were facing life expiry ... But thanks to the media and Facebook / Twitter et al and the number of stupid people I find myself on the run from every day the verdicts of 'Geriatric Jets!' and 'Unsafe Carrier!' have travelled instead of IMHO a darn bad run of luck / inconvenient coincidence! People travelling WJA across the Atlantic (again) IMHO have nothing to fear ... Except for turning up to find a Boeing 737-800W or even a Boeing 737-700W (into Dublin and Glasgow - YIKES!!!) assigned to their trip! Cowelly :o)
That wheel probably killed someone!
What would have notified them they had a problem to instigate the flyby?
Tower saw the wheel come off during departure, and the crew also saw a low pressure indicator on that particular wheel immediately after rotation. They left the gear down and went from there.
Ok thanks
wheels have air pressure rfi sensors in them that operate similarly to automotive sensors, triggering a low/no pressure event on a "dashboard" alarm indicator.
Where did the flight originate from??
Your mom's house.
Why are there so many dislikes
Where is the footage from?
What so you mean?
Was the wheel ever found ?
Yes, next to the runway.
