We had a total blockage on the main pipe that runs water out of our house. It was a Sunday and the Monday after that was a holiday so unfortunately we had to call somebody in. Guy showed up with a 15t special equipment truck filled with stuff to clean out blocked drains. He tried a water-jet first but that only made a mess. He then tried to use a camera but all we could see was black. Just as a joke he said it looks like the pipe were growing hair. As a last trick he whipped out what i thought was the most bad as tool I've ever seen. A 5kW rotating death machine with a cutting head that looks like a alien probe out of hell (in German they are called "Abfluss Spirale", not sure if they even have an English translation). It got stuck too. The Men got so pissed you could tell how it was starting to get to his honor. In the end he used a tool designed to drill out old ceramic pipes that is literally powered by his trucks main engine. He said if he drill would damage the pipes his company would replace them. What he pulled out was the biggest bunch of hair he had ever seen. It filled two 120 liter tubs and wrapped itself around the rotary cutter and drill he was using so tightly he had to burn it of, which also took forever.
He only charged us for two hours of work, which given it was Sunday evening/night was still 600€) despite the fact he was at our house for almost six and did a camera inspection of the pipe a week later to make sure he didn't split it.
This Guy earned his tip like none before, a true men of honor.

That’s what I love about the Germans. They always do whatever is necessary to get the job done at a reasonable price. Everything is always overdone to the max (like the French discovered). I would’ve paid that guy the full thing no matter what.

Unfortunately here in American not everyone is like that. When we had a backup in our basement, since we live in city limits, the city comes out and there is no fee. But anything else that needs fixed, any guy that comes to my house is always very polite and never overcharges me. They know I'm chronically sick and are so kind. I have had to fight with some companies before, but most of the time workers are friendly. I've always wanted to visit Germany. I'm 80% German.

His Jetter pushes 3000-5000PSI whichever he sets it to. The most of his drains are filled by Tree Roots that invade the pipes, He is in Australia. "All Good". A few years back we had our sewer pipes jetted and inspected, the house is 115 years old. We were surprised to learn that they were in great shape save for some calcification and cooking fat buildup in the sewer line from the laundry/kitchen. The plumber had the same setup as Oliver. The camera revealed that we had cast iron pipes, but not much sediment in the main to the street. Recently we had them inspected again, and all was well.

Hello Roger! You asked for opinions on hydro-jetting, so here is mine. I've done a whole lot of jetting with a small 1200 psi, electric machine to the big trucks for indisutrial/municipal drains. As with everything, they have their place and sometimes they can do a job (such as the "oatmeal" job you referred to here). I never had much luck with a jetter removing all the roots, but for grease, sludge, oatmeal they can't be beat. I'm a 33 year veteran drain cleaner. I retired 2 years ago after a heart attack and 6 bypasses, (traded too many pizzas for drain work!) but my blood still runs brown. I LOVED what I did for a living and while I love fishing and being retired, there are those days when I sure miss being the hero when that nasty water goes away!

    1. A nice view when the jet breaks though the upstream(?) clog and everything comes rushing though, and

Ive never seen a hydrojet used in person, but Ive seen something similar at work. Plumber came into the restaraunt i was working with a similar set up except the jet he had came with a short blade on the front that spins when the water was on. He said that it was to cut through soil, rocks, or even broken pipe debris in the event of a collapsed pipe (buildings in the area were part of the "historical downtown" were using 80 year old plumbing.). They ended up finding the clog, getting the jet stuck, brought in another jet to try to unstick the first, and then caused the pipe to collapse on both jets. They had to go next door where they were remodeling, cut a chunk out of the cement slab foundation, retrieve both jets via excavation, and then just capped the plumbing and laid new pipe under the other building.

Now days with water restrictions on the use of town water, people install water tanks, so these roof run off holes are disappearing. They do get clogged up with debris and tree roots.

I’ve been doing this for a long time..25 years..or so.. mostly I use cables. They generally are more appropriate for the drains I see... but jetting is fun.. I have 5 different Jetters.. 2 electric Jetters. MyTana J20 and a Spartan cadet those are for small drains.. then I have 2 4000 psi units. 4 gpm and 7 gpm.. and then I ha e a 2800psi 15.5 gpm unit. Jetting is a lot of work.. it’s physically demanding... more so than cabling which also is very demanding... for me... this drain... I would have cabled it....I would have cleared it.. and I would t have made such a mess... but..this was outside... so.. either way is good...

This is giving me flashbacks of my little plumbing emergency on Saturday. Toilet clogs and water starts rising, I tried the clingfilm technique but nope, wouldn't budge. My fiance is standing freaking out beside me, he didn't know what to do either. Out of desperation I wrapped my arm in plastic bag, so I didn't touch any nastiness. I just reached in the bowl and down slightly, pulled a berg of toilet paper and a certain smelly brown substance out. I threw it in waiting bin bag and right out away away. My fiance was choking, gagging and his eyes were watering he sheepishly said 'thanks for getting it out'. It was gross, it was horrendous but I unclogged the toilet.

I'm impressed with the accesses that are available for a jetter. In my area, access for a jetter on most homes built before 1990, are rare. We locate, and install true two way clean outs. Your great Roger. I love your passion for plumbing.

Ollie from Drain addict is a friggin stud. He does a job that the vast majority of people would refuse to do. He is awesome and provides a service that separates 1st world countries from 2nd world. He truly does more for civilization than you imagine. If all the ollies in the world were gone, you would die. This goes for plumbers also but Ollie does the worst of the worst aspect of plumbing.

I worked drain cleaning for about 9 months before going back to new residential plumbing and man it was disgusting. Tampons and baby wipes are the worst thing to snake out.

I remember when tree roots blocked our sewer line. We had sewage backup into our basement laundry room, which is adjacent to my room, so they ended up having to take out 18" of drywall from the floor up and 16" or so of carpet.

I was a laborer for a plumbing company where we had a big jetter that you could trailer on the back of a work truck. Every time we had a jetting call, it was always cool to jet a line to clear whatever the stoppage was. The only trouble was having to maneuver the head through bends and turns in the piping.

Comments concerning parts of the video...
I like around 6:10 and also when the water came up out of the pipe and you said oooh. Later on I like the water shooting up from the pipes! I was thinking the same thing about his clothes and climbing in his vehicle. I wonder if the seats smell like a swamp. Probably not too bad if the seats are not plush. I got a skiing trick I call Flushed Down the toilet. It's when you get to certain slopes of the hill and spin 360's as fast as you can going down. I would do those from day time till night time when they closed.

Hi Roger. Ollie is a real legend here in Australia. My all time favourite video of his is 402 when he says oh there’s a fresh one. Be prepared Roger, it’s pretty gruesome! You call them a hydro jetter, we call them a pressure cleaner and it’s about 5000PSI. By the way the bird sounds - the Magpie and the Kookaburra are added in editing. 👍🇦🇺

I use to dig up utilities with the big ol vac trucks and we had ear plugs in everyday it was so loud. We were running anywhere between 2000 and 3500 psi and you can cut asphalt and almost concrete with it.

Having just realized I enjoy these videos today I thought about why I liked them. My favorite part, because I don't know much about drain systems, is when a big ball of somethin funky out and it fills a sewer chamber up with water and drains it back out, and maybe does that a few times. It's just interesting how the water moves and how there can be hundred gallon pockets of water between clogs is crazy. Was a big fan a Dirty Jobs back in the day.
