I think it’s a bit more complicated. He has senile moments. The question is how much that matters and whether America is comfortable having Kamala take over for him should he have to step down. I certainly am afraid of that because I think she’s unbelievably incompetent. Many fellow Democrats agree. I think we need to back Bobby Kennedy Jr, and here’s why:
1. If we think the environment is the most important issue, we MUST get Republicans on board. Otherwise whatever progress Democrats have made will be erased overnight, as it was when Trump took over. We simply have to build a consensus around this. Bobby Kennedy has been doing it for decades. Hard to find a bigger environmentalist in American history.
2. Democrats have been pushing against corporate influence for years. He’s in line with our traditional values there.
3. He can beat Trump. He’s been beating big corporate lawyers in court for decades. With all due respect to Biden, he’s just not up to the challenge in the same way.

Joe Biden purposely made student debt relief fail on a technicality as he knew it would be overturned by the supreme Court. That way, he could force young voters to come out to the polls a third time with the carrot and stick hanging over their heads. A $15 minimum wage was completely ignored by a made-up parliamentarian. Refugee kids are still dying in detention centers at the border. Biden has given more gas and oil exploration permits than Trump. Joe Biden helped break the back of the railroad workers union. Joe Biden has continued a proxy war against Russia and borders on the brink of nuclear Armageddon. Joe Biden promised a public healthcare option but now never mentions it. And on and on and on and on....
These undeniable facts are why the president is so unpopular because the broader electorate understands that he works for corporations, not them. Obviously the Republicans are fascist, but the Democrats through their corporate corrupt complicity are sleepwalking us into this grim future. Sadly, Corporate Joe's sole purpose is to block progressive energy and the DNC is perfectly fine with Trump being president so long as Americans never get universal healthcare.

Threats to democracy are not simply based on violence in the streets. It’s based on the Constitution, the institutions and the rights of voters to be heard and counted.
So bring back the Republic, the rule of law. You can’t have one without the other.

In good faith, how do we go through the entire interview without asking anything about the border or inflation?
ProPublica is an investigative journalism organization. Their journalists don't bounce around from topic to topic to cover all of today's hot button issues. They dig into specific issues. This interview was focused on the threats to our democracy. Inflation and migration are problems, not threats.
@@RuthB51 I would argue that both are major economic threats propelling the collapse of the middle class. The entirety of this interview seemed to curtail the same notions of Biden’s 2020 campaign strategy that we must re-elect him simply because the latter inevitable opponent is bad. This leaves us to weigh rather we want to choose poor economic performance or poor domestic civil relations amongst the populace.

I'm no longer proud to be a Democrat seeing how the border is being NOT handled, can't even say, how it's being handled because it's atrocious and there is silence from the White House on too many issues concerning the public. He needs to address these concerns and stop focusing on Maga and Trump. If he was doing what the people wanted and needed (the poverty increase , the homelessness increase, the violence increase) and actually had solutions because other candidates are talking about solutions and brilliant ideas, he would have a stronger position in my view. However I do not believe he has been truthful with Americans about his dealings with Hunter. I'm curious to see what continues to surface in the inquiry. He's lost my confidence and this interview did nothing to restore it. Seemed very planned, careful and edited frankly. I believe the American people at this critical times deserves more from our Leader.

It is baffling how voluntarily blind Americans are making themselves to the values and policies of their own bloody president because "hahaha old guy". Notice how any criticism of the Biden administration is based exclusively in either conspiracy theory or anger over his personality and age. Biden makes this same point in the interview, its extremely rare to see an argument presented against Biden's administration that is based in demonstrable fact and is actually attempting to make an argument.
I'd find it deeply sad if Americans select their president next year based on their TikTok feeds and talkback radio. THAT would be the death of American democracy

I stopped meaningfully engaging maga people both online and in my life a long time ago. It didnt and still doesn’t seem to matter what facts you bring, what logic, what passion… You are met with not only an alternative reality, but one that they don’t even pretend to be consistent between talking points, attacks or whataboutisms… I truly do not know what to do. I miss civil debate and discourse. I think we are stronger and safer with 2 strong parties that bring different perspectives and ideas to the table, but that’s not what we have anymore. That’s not what we’ve had for a long time. It’s scary.
Yeah I can relate. I think of the past 8 years trying to do that with leftist antifa members and college age democrats. After a while it becomes sort of like a reflex action; you know they’re not serious about discussing any of the issues.

Just don’t find as many outspoken ‘blue or die’ people as I do blue collar rednecks with their Trump flags, hats, shirts, bumper stickers, etc, that know nothing about politics, the constitution or the way our government works.
Maybe that’s due to my location, but as an example, almost all of my in-laws truly believe I’m gonna die on the 3 year anniversary of my ‘jab’… Not kidding. A few of them are on government assistance (SNAP) and a few more are on disability/social security. They love Trump bc he gave them permission to publicly blame the ‘other’ for all their problems… Immigrants, brown/black people, gay people, etc. And although none of them have ever met one in real life, they are all convinced that the biggest threat to their kids are trans people.
What’s crazy is that by all external features, I am the only one of them that ‘should’ support Trump given my career/income. Maybe they believe they’re always one scratch off ticket away from being rich too lol…. i honestly stopped trying to understand it a long time ago.
That said, I really do agree that being stupid & ignorant is one of the last remaining bipartisan sports lol.

It’d be one thing if Biden was keeping quiet to save face politically while he sorts it out but he’s not only not addressing it he’s not doing anything to fix the issue either. It also doesn’t help that the far left literally want an open boarder and he has to pander to them and thread lightly as to not offend anyone who ideologically views securing the boarder as an ultra nationalistic and anti humanitarian transgression even if it’s at our own peril.

These weren't "softball" questions... at least, not in the way you think. The entire point of this interview was to discuss the threats to American democracy. Those threats are not coming from Joe Biden. There is nothing he has done or failed to do that would warrant a combative interview on this specific topic.

He is voicing the fears that are running around in my head. MAGA has been hard at work to undermine the basis of our Democracy by finding the loopholes that assume basic morality in our administration.

Biden is a good president. He was great great in this interview and although he emphasizes us to “show up” and try to enter into a two-way conversation with MAGA supporters, I don’t see that being effective or even possible. Well maybe I’ve given up on that but I will vote, donate and volunteer to serve as an election inspector (first year!) to try and do my part to try and ensure the focus is on saving democracy.

@@benjamin.fong15 there could be many reasons for that. I suspect Biden uses filler words (um, uh) and stock phrases that the editors cut for time. Podcasters do that to their own recordings all the time. He could have also said things off the record or simply paused for several seconds before deciding how to phrase the next sentence. It's a courtesy to both Biden and us to trim the "dead air" out of both the questions and answers. It's nothing nefarious.

One thing that has always struck me as peculiar about how America 'discusses' serious topics, is that they can't seem to do it unless they use satire or wrap it in comedy / memes.

I am tired of hearing about how our democracy is in danger and using it as a stick to motivate voters. It's been years! Two of those years had democratic control in all three houses! If you all haven't passed laws to protect our democracy, if you all haven't cared that much even, why should the voters?
