- Join us for a couple of typical mornings aboard our home, narrowboat Alba. In the second lockdown, we decided to get on with a few DIY projects. First, we begin tiling the splashback in the kitchen and painting our bathroom. We are also going on a pre-birthday walk to Avebury stone circle here in Wiltshire and experience some amazing strong winds.

Try some red devil on your fire not too much and it's very good
Lighting Fires & Keeping them Lit is a REAL SKILL with Lots of Understanding.
Stoke the Fire up, Close all Draught / vents. Add A slightly Damp or Moist Log, ( the Largest you can fit into the fire. ) For a Long Slow Burn.
If Either of You awake in the night to use the toilet Add another Log to the Fire.
Great views of the stone circle and avenue. More memories of arriving from an over night drive from Derbyshire at stupid o'clock in the morning, wandering around in the mist and then curling up to sleep in an MG Midget. We were young then. So pleased you are enjoying while you are youngsters.
Freezing mist is rare in the middle of America. I've only seen it a few times over my life. Thank you for sharing your adventurous Birthday too!
Use Waste Paper & Packaging to Get the Fire & Chimney Warm 1st. Then add Kindling, Add a Couple of Logs,
You can also Place a Couple of Logs in the Fire Before Lighting the Paper & Kindling.
Then use Half a Compressed Fire Log.
Happy Birthday Marina! Avebury, Silbury Hill & West Kennet Long Barrow are some of my favourite places. I'm not sure if you'll get near to it but White Horse Hill at Uffington is another mysterious, spiritual, ancient place with Wayland's Smithy and Dragon Hill. Beautiful. Myles seemed very shy when you first started doing your vlogs but now he is so funny, we loved him impersonating "the crew in meltdown" this week. Keep safe, take care xx

Good Nz morning people. Another breath of fresh air from you. A huuuge HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINA. Sorry I didn't know how many candles I needed for your cake. So settled for one in the middle. Now Myles and Marina, I really love you guys,,but I really have to say this. Down here in Nz, we learnt from an early age "mad dogs and English men and women, go out in the midday sun." BTW I'm looking at my 74th summer. Might I include...."go out in the pouring rain." Yes I understand it was your birthday walk Marina, but I mean to say. For exercise, walk along the towpath, on each run. And avoid the very wet rain. Finally, it worries me about the condensation each morning. If its possible to find hard wood, not soft like pine etc...which creates tarring and creosote in the flue, but hard wood, put that on your fire last thing at night as a back log., reduce the air intake and the fire will keep ticking overnight. Not being familiar with your other timbers, might I suggest oak.? Also make room for your firewood under your stove, so that it stays dry. Gee wish I was able to visit you, then I could personally help deal with those issues. Take care and stay safe. Keep the videos coming. End of lecture. Lol. Atb.

Hi, I love the videos, but one thing is really bugging me. Every time you show your mooring lines you appear to be tying them on the bank, rather than running them back to the boat and tying off there. It's safer for other users of the towpath, as there's not a load of extra rope around the pins and rings, plus they're less likely to be messed with if they're tied up on the boat rather than the towpath. Stay safe out there, hope you manage to keep warm. xxx

So nice to see Avebury again. There is a lovely walking trail along along narrow canal that once must have been used for boats as there was a pill box there to guard against a German invasion. I actually attended the wedding of the Lord of the Manor only by accident as I was touring the ground and was in the church when the wedding started. I asked the cannon if I cold stay and said I could. I have a feeling that I am in the wedding photos of the Lord. Till this day they are probably trying to figure who that girl was in the photos. For starting campfires in the desert we would always take dryer lint along with us and use it as kindling. It is scary how quickly it catches and can get the fire going. Though one time we did have a problem with the firewood we brought along as it got thoroughly soaked the night before. We could not get it to light and had no lighter fluid. My friend Cecelia squirted some hairspray (yes hairspray) on the log and kindling. We all laughed, thinking no way will it work, but it did, in no time we had a roaring fire for the entire evening.

Hi guys and happy birthday - Mine too in a week! Hey - If you have no antifreeze- leave the cap off so it cant pressurizer overnight and crack the block- easy fix till you get antifreeze - and do that ruvvish bin water tank hack that I showed you- then you will have water when you need it - Love Stu.

Reversing is always a bit hit or miss... not too bad if not windy. I would have gone for a thick bed of flexible tile adhesive and straight on - good choice of tiles... just like mine!
No way, same tiles! Ah maybe next time we will use more 👌

Lovely - Happy Birthday! The standing stones are fantastic - I remember visiting there as a child with my parents - my late father had a fascination with such ancient monuments and was a believer in Ley Lines (Avebury is a great confluence of them) - I find such things really interesting and certainly recommend looking such things up - the books are out of print on the matter but there's lots on line! Thanks as always for a lovely vlog.
The energy there is surely quite special!
Theres a middle aged couple & to save cash when they go for walks they collect some cone type things that fall from trees & they burn those to save money.
Just an idea 4 ya.x
PS to clean ur glass door on fire they run a used cold tea bag, they said it works gr8.

Another lovely video from two of my favourite people. We were at Avebury a few weeks ago. Very muddy in places. It must have been very frustrating when the fire wouldn’t go without a lot of effort. You can get proper plastic tile spacers......put some non slip on your gang plank or 1inch battens spaced apart to stop you slipping...

Hotmax heatlogs are the bees knees. Not only made out of a renewable source, but a waste part of that renewable source, from horse bedding industry. . Easy to light an give out good heat, and smoke free once well lit. £11 for two 20 kilo bags in my parts. You can also break them ( with effort) into smaller size if just want reduced heat or shorter burntime.

Hi Marina what an experience it was watching the sunrise with you. Your beautiful face was brought to life as the light burst through the mist ,your animation and joy lifted me to welcome the day with you ,even my coffee tasted different ,truly a magic moment to be remembered. Enjoy the Pewsey area Think about the pellet stove a lot of people use them here as you say they are virtually automatic ,no problem staying alight overnight and the ash is less bulk. We have pellet stoves in the US, but a lot cheaper… pellet stoves work great… huge btu output with no smoke and very little ash residue. The ash is a great PH balancer for gardening too
Great diy result. I used to hate condensation on the windows but now use the temp double glazing (cling film!) over the windows during the winter and it eliminates it completely for just a few quid per pack.
Stormguard, but if you search window insulation kit on ebay or look in B and Q and Wickes you will find others.
@James Cricket James yes I used to use these kits when I lived in bricks and mortar as well as now on a boat and it transforms winter living for such a small cost. Good luck.

The best way I’ve seen a fire lighted is with one of those gas torches plumbers use for soldering Cooper pipes with, a quick blast and it’s up and running seconds.
I have a gas poker that runs off a small propane tank. Light it and stick it in the coals. Great if I've run out of kindling.
Put a gutter on the edge of roofline to top ur water up

I have a wood pellet stove and it has electric motors for exhaust and blow the heat into the room. When our electricity when out for 8 hours last week if it wasn't for our other wood stove we would have frozen and had to move into a hotel and the rest of the family in the nearby area was without electricity also.

Many happy returns Marina! Avebury, the surrounding area and frosty mornings are so cool! Just getting out regardless of weather or how you're feeling is just better!! Out of curiousity, you have the car, but are there online help groups that will help boaters running errands? Or do you rely on friends and family? Many of you often mention it's awkward getting stuff to and from your boats. Enough of us on land live near or pass the waterways. I'm sure many would volunteer. Just a thought. Also, loving how Myles is getting a little bit more sarcastic/ p@ss taking(in a good way) in the vlogs! Don't deny it!!😂👍
There are groups for boaters and boaters are very helpful. In general if we need anything done we bring the boat into a town with amenities and get stuck in with a to do list. It was much easier when we lived in London we used to use our friends’ addresses for post! Myles is just warming up you haven’t seen nothing yet 😅

You can diy a pellet burner for a regular wood stove, it doesn't auto feed of course. Plenty of videos on youtube.

Pellet stoves are great but for you it would not because the pellets are sawdust and you can not store them outside like your coal, they will soak up moisture ,and you will end up with wet soggy expanded bag of sawdust that will not burn no matter what you do to it. not recommended on a narrow boat...

Why do you buy 'heat logs' (compressed paper and cardboard logs) when you throw away or recycle the same? why not attempt to make your own? I've been doing this for a while now and it really doesn't take much work, saves money and that money can go towards Gin, so it's a win/win situation!
Hey lovely, thank you so much for watching! Well we do burn all our paper/cupboard recycling, we even have a special box for it, but unfortunately, it only goes as far as kindling, its nowhere near enough to keep us warm. Hope this helps! Marina 💜
