  • Doohyun’s father was unjustly imprisoned and tortured by North Korean authorities. Even after surviving the unimaginable, he was defiant. He wrote 20 pages of complaints to the Central Party about the human rights abuses he endured. It would cost him his life.
While his father was never able to experience freedom, Doohyun is now living the life he had envisioned for all North Koreans.
Today, Doohyun is a father himself and works for a North Korea human rights organization, continuing his father’s legacy.

Doohyun, I'm so sorry for your father. He is such a brave man who stood up and challenged the brutal party with the 20 pages of hand-written letter. Meanwhile, you made really a tough decision to escape the hometown in the North and endured so much hardships and many challenges. Whatever you do, wishing you and your family the best. Thank you so much for sharing your stories!🙏

I have North Korean roots as well. My great grandfather and great uncle were executed by the communists around 1950. My dad was brought to South Korea by his father. Your father was an amazing man. Sending love and my very best wishes to your family.

Doohyun-ssi, you have a father to be proud of. You might think everybody has a father to look up to, but that is not the case. Keep telling his story and yours, -however small on the face of the earth- I think they are historical events. Your father's letter and your escape are extremely rare happenings. I hope the rest of your family is in safety.

His father was a wise man knowing Doo Hyun will come to realization and escape North Korea or he was just so fed up he didn't care for his family's welfare at all. Either way this deserves more views and awareness.

Only constant travel can give u a sense of freedom... There is no free state on Earth by definition. Just think out of the box.

That’s all very well and good for us, but the North Koreans live under a totalitarian regime where they can be executed for criticizing human rights abuses. Before they can even begin to think about something like traveling freely they have to flee the country under risk of death. The level of restriction in NK is so far beyond normal. Don’t try to paint all countries with the same brush.
