WoF 10/14/08: First Million Dollar Winner

  • I can't believe it happened that quickly either. :D
The $26,080 from the maingame was accumulated during Toss-Up 2, Round 1 (4 N's on 2500 space + prize puzzle: trip to Hawaii, about 18k total), and Round 2 ($5100 with major help from a couple of $800 spins).
Skeptics believing it was too easy - yes, a prize puzzle always helps, but it was only $5200: the N's in the 1st round vaulted her ahead, and when $10k was amassed in the second round by another player, she couldn't finish off "SKYLINE". $7000 from 2 S's on the $3500 space was washed away by a Bankrupt by another player as well. Granted she wasn't dominant late, and never had any close calls...but in the end, it comes down to this:
1/24 chance of landing on the $1mil slip in the Bonus Round. She barely made it to the W instead of the I, which could have just as well had 25k - that, no matter what you think the maingame has become, is ALL luck. She doesn't say A in the puzzle, she's doomed as well - CDMA is the most common, but we've seen CDMO and CDMI as well. And then other combos like PDHI/O would have gotten no help at all.
    Michelle's reaction on WOF's Contestant Blog: www.wheeloffort...
    Viewing party story: abclocal.go.com...
10/20 - Another $1mil bonus round occured tonight. The puzzle was not solved, but she landed on the exact same letter - the W in WIN - which held $30k. The million was behind the I in WIN. So 3 out of 4 times, the million has been two spaces or lower away.
    11/17 - 30000+! Also, a near-$1mil win, sorta tonight, but it was still $100k!
    2/16 - See brand-new video response.

If you think about it, she's the first contestant to win more than a million dollars in the history of game shows... as far as I know. Ken Jennings was great, but it took him over 56 days to win over $2 million. She went over the million dollars in one show. :)

I usually don't get real excited or in the same emotional state as the contestant watching million dollar wins, especially one I knew was coming, but this time I did. Maybe because I was glad after 25 years of Pat and Vannah hosting a show, they finally got to give away a million dollars. Maybe it's because the contestant I actually seemed to care about, not a freaky lunatic like on DOND most of the time. IDK, but it was a great clip.

The episode featuring win reruns tonight 6/30/09. Another new week of first-run shows coming in two weeks(7/13-7/17). Wonder if there might be another win like this then, as they're airing a week of first run shows in July for only the second time in syndicated WOF history(1996 there was one week of this for the Olympics sponsorship)

Yeah that's right. I believe the question was "who was the longest reigning British monarch." The answer was Queen Victoria. She reigned for 63 years. She was leaning towards Henry VIII but she changed her answer to Queen Victoria and won. Now that's a teacher that knows a lot of history.

I was pretty shock that she won the million. What's really shocking that she got the million dollar envelope in the bonus round. One out of 24 envelopes she got the million. Simply amazing! Let's see, Deal or No Deal gave away a million a month ago, then a game show call 1 vs. 100 a guy won a million by knocking out the remaining 15 mob members because they don't think Christmas is the most card giving of the year. One person almost won a million by playing Don't Forget the Lyrics.

That's the rules the FFC adopted to make sure that game shows are not fixed or results influenced by the producers or sponsors.
It is named for Herb Stempel, who "lost" to Charles Van Doren on "Twenty-One" back in the 50's, and then blew the whistle on how the results were fixed, bringing the scandal into the public light.

As can be seen on other times when the Million Dollar wedge is in play, Pat always shows afterward where the Million dollar card was located, just to show the chance to pick it was there. So he must know beforehand in what slot the card has been placed
So, in this instance, he knew she had the million dollar card as soon as it was picked. He went the extra mile to make sure he had everyone's attention before revealing the amount.

You spin the wheel a land on the million dollar wedge, you have to call a letter that is in the puzzle, you have solve the puzzle to maintain the million dollar wedge. After that you cannot hit any bankrupts for the rest of the game, and you have to have the most money. If you do all of that you will play for the million.
