Watch me cut a $100 rough opal into a $2000 gem

  • Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained is pretty much the motto of any opal cutter.
The risk can become somewhat calculated over time, but you never really know what is happening inside that piece of rough.
Tools like the Gemfish Flashlight can help find inclusions, which allows you to make a better assessment of the gem outcome.
However, whichever way you look at it, cutting opals will forever be a financial risk!

It's always a nice surprise to see a new BOD vid. It's so amazing how opal mimics colors you see in nature, especially in the ocean. You can see the colors of a mandarin fish or a mantis shrimp in that stone. Spectacular, especially for a $100 piece of rough. Excellent job, Justin.

Diamonds are dropping in community value and people are realizing that the market is over saturated and the prices don't exhibit a real reflection of the rarity. Especially what's currently considered mid, and mid-high grade. Every continent produces diamonds. Sedimentary black opal, one place. Note: Herkimer diamonds should have a higher value since there's only one area that produces then in New York.

I understand that the drama is in the suspense of what the grind will expose, but for dollar payoff potential I have to believe there is imaging equipment and software that can 3D model the opal concealed in any rough stone based on density or similar property (beyond strong light).
    Know the target in advance.
