I love the Polar Express, and I know Sierra 3's Lima 5 Chime is the whistle we all associate with it, and I also know that 1225 is the real Polar Express. I'm not arguing that, because that is fact. However, there is a fundamental problem with putting a 5 chime Nathan copy, which both this and Sierra 3's whistle are, on a locomotive such as 1225, and that is a problem of pressure. See, Sierra 3 is old... Quite old, in fact. Being built in the 1890's, it's boiler pressure, as a result, is relatively low, at 150psi. Note that I said "relatively". See, 1225 is much, much newer, being built in October of 1941,it has the privilege of having a higher boiler pressure. Much higher, in fact. At 245psi, it's nearly 100psi more than Sierra 3's boiler pressure. If this whistle were mounted to 1225, it's sound would change drastically, simply because the steam entering it is so much higher in pressure. Don't believe me? @@benwise6517 steam truly is king. And its power output is much higher than either diesel, gasoline, or electricity can provide. It's just that coal is somewhat expensive. Oil is, too. Wood, however, is actually economically viable, I believe. Wood burning steam locomotives could potentially make a comeback one day, who knows?
